When you get a rediculously low offer for a trade in it is just them saying they don't want it but as they are also trying to sell you one they don't want to offend too much. The reason they don't want it is probably not the miles, but that is an easy excuse to make.

Good morning; I think PCP deals are what has started this low mileage fashion on bikes . If a bike is serviced correctly and on time ,with modern oils ,ridden regularly, warmed up properly. Then you can get huge mileage on them. Try to be satisfied with the bike of your choice. This time of year is the best time to get a good deal on your next bike .Do your homework 😊

Keeping the bike Geraldine, seems the best approach. If it's not broken then just use it and as we both know hunger engines go forever if looked after correctly.👍

Juat the change in reliability, remember when your Dad used to say don't buy a car with close to 100,000 miles on and now it is hard to find a secondhand car with less than 100,000 on. My GS1200 has 35,000 on and my Thunderbird has about 25,000 on and I would jump on either and cross Europe with no worries.

You're right, gone all the days where you would consider if you'd make it to wherever you were going. Generally speaking, in the 21st century, reliability has gone through the roof. As long as we maintain and service the machine machines, one could suspect they'll last forever.👍

Could be that dealers reason that high mileage means they'll have to do a fair bit of work on it to make it saleable, while people who buy on eBay tend to know more about bikes and better able to do whatever work needs doing. They might even consider it fun. Could also be that the dealers don't know enough to do a thorough inspection to assess what it's really worth (they might just be salesmen or shop staff there for a job), or don't have the time to examine every detail of the bike for rust and other defects.

I have a 2011 Triumph street triple. I bought it about 10 or 11 years ago. It only has 6k on the clock and immaculate and has been properly serviced. IE fork oil replaced at the correct interval. I never bothered even asking the dealer how much they would give me in part exchange i knew it would be a ridiculously low amount. So i have kept it and keep it looking immaculate and take it out on dry sunny weekends. Its the slightly rare purple version, last of the mk1 production and i get positive remarks from Fellow bikers which is nice. My 22 plate Bonnie is a long-term keeper. If you keep wanting new or different bikes it will cost you in part ex each time. Im happy with what i have. Keeping bikes is the Chuck Berry principle. Always keep the car because dealers dont want to give you much. Chuck had a large barn with many cadillacs in it !

Have to say I had a surprisingly positive experience at a main dealer with a 26000 mile bike a couple of years ago. Trading in a 2010 Aprilia Shiver against a new Suzuki GSXS1000S. No it was not what I wanted for it£££, but it was in the lower end of the ball park ££ for a slightly neich bike. As it happened the big Suzuki used far too much fuel for a Tourer in 2022 imho so I decided not to proceed although I loved the bike/ride. Sold the Aprilia privately a few weeks later and got (almost) my asking price with a few spare and service items I’d collected included 😊😊 Things I’d imagine have changed now in late 2024 and dealers have suddenly found they have a £4M second hand stock now worth maybe £2M. The new sales margins are relatively slim for dealers and manufacturers penalties harsh for not selling enough new bikes. A lot of dealerships are not headed by an ex racer/mechanic/enthusiast any more - but a ‘sales manager’ with little interest or knowledge of anything but the bottom line imo. Assessing the worth of a second hand bike is all about knowing the brand and models flaws and strengths and popularity/availability for dealer or individual and managing the risk: service history, regular receipts for oils and filters, general condition, quality of any additions/tyres. Dealer are nervous of further stock that may fall further and financiers want returns not ‘old’ bikes. Buyers market if you have spare cash, bargain hard and fill your sheds!!

My close friend works for a ktm dealer in the midlands, they wont buy any 125 with over 8k miles and 125+ with over 20k miles. This is because they deem it as a warranty liability and highly likely the bike will return for repairs within the 3 month warranty term. I tried to sell them my ktm duke 125 with 9k miles, 21 model year i owned it from new with 4 services in the 2 years i owned it for, had to sell it private. Although it did cost ktm over £3.5k in warranty repairs 😂

It's a strange thing, high mileage on motorbikes. I do a lot of miles on my bikes but always service them on time and they get whatever they need. So I would have no problem buying a bike from me(if that was possible) However I wouldn't buy a bike with lots of miles and lots of owners with no service history. It has to be said that some bikes will not last well. My last Sportster had over 100,000 miles and was still running fine. I don't see why it cannot do another 100k because of ease of service and availability of replacement parts. However my mate has an old Suzuki he tells me it's near impossible to get parts for.
