does volume profile only really work well for instruments that have a central exchange vs ones like futures vs stocks ?

Hi, it's 100% accurate only on centralized markets, that's right. We don't get to see the complete forex volume for example. However, you see volumes from the data provider the brokerage uses. It is not merely volume from the broker. It is a much bigger piece of the market. If you compare it to currency futures then it is very close surprisingly and therefore pretty reliable (if that's why you ask :))
