How absolutely true those words are. As a 63 year old man, I can look back and see the same game that Watts talked about, that I played so urgently, with such passionate energy. It's hard to tell a younger person this. They won't (as I couldn't have) "get" it. The economic royalists of our age know this is a game, but it benefits them (also temporarily) so very much; and so they urge us all on, and on, and on. We benefit them, while being defrauded of our only life. There is the true heart break: to have missed living our life while in the service of an illusion that helps someone else who does not care!

@EdCatt...yes, well said i am 56 and feel the same way....been reading up on this guy Watts; he has his detractors ( who doesn't) but MAN oh Man, does he make a BOATLOAD of sense, right ? other readings stress this; living in the present while planning for the future, etc., etc. Yesterday is history, tomorrow's a mystery, today is a gift; thats y they call it the PRESENT ! Live " mindfully " folks !!

There's a lot of BS when it comes to this sort of topic, I know, but I agree that Watts does make some very important observations, no matter what his personal life might have been like, or if he is liked, or disliked, by certain people. I think he's worth listening to. I don't totally agree with everything he says, but, that doesn't detract from his general message. Yes, everything we do is Now. Where else could we live? Now is like the prow of a ship, plowing through the ocean. We are at that uttermost tip, breaking into the future-now from the recent past-now.

Ed Catt Yeah, well, what about people like me? I never had anything to follow, because I always was the odd one out, desperately trying, at every single step of the way, to convince myself otherwise. I feel cheated right now as I'm fighting an uphill battle against the "game". I know what I want to do but can't because it would be socially too irresponsible of me and not that I give a shit about the society but my parents, no, I have got to make enough to give them back something, however, minuscule, for what they have had to sacrifice. For once, I want to be able to be the one who doesn't get it and makes the mistakes and realizes it, not at 62 but maybe, at 28 or 25. That way, I will at least have something to reminisce over...
@edcatt9196
@edcatt9196 9 жыл бұрын
Why do you think you're the odd one out? How do you think you were cheated? If what you want to do is, in fact, socially irresponsible, then maybe you can do something more constructive? It's hard to know what to say to your comment. Maybe this "game" thing is about recognizing it as a game, and then playing it so as to benefit yourself, and others around you? The Game is Life. I hope in time you figure out some solution(s) to the frustrations you are facing currently. Good luck!

I never forget the day I realized that past and present only exist in my mind, that time only exist in my head. When I now look at a clock I don't see time, I see some device that represents time. Time for me now is just the space between two thoughts. Thoughts are great for analyzing things, but not a single thought contains any truth. Everything simply is.

I don't want to be in this trap society has set us. Going to uni for a degree, getting a 9 to 5 job, get paid average amount for mortgage to be paid over 20 years. Grow old and get illnesses and die. That sounds like a miserable long depressing death to me. I'm currently 23 and very depressed every day. My passion is to travel to the world and live a life seeing the beautiful sights in the world not worrying where my income will come from but just being outside and not caring. I need to make this happen because if I don't I will live a life of constant regret. I need to stop listening to the negative people telling me this isn't possible it's my only chance at being happy and do what I desire. Does anyone else feel like this?

I'll be honest with you all. I've always expected life to be amazing for 'me.' That it would just be a matter or time before something came into 'my' life that would turn it all around in an instant. Then it hit me, all there has ever been is this moment. There's a strange duality of spirituality I find. It's like to be free from responsibility you have to accept it in its absolute totality. I am God, we are God. Wow, it will never cease to amaze Peace to all beings

What upsets me is much of our culture is all about the future, raising the idea that the present is always impoverished. You need more degrees, more promotions, more physical goodies, and even an entire life after death. All of these things condition the individual that today is not good, and what is good comes tomorrow, and tomorrow is always an idea that at best is literally tomorrow and at worst - and most common- is never. Why do we play this sham on the world?
@RandomRants
@RandomRants 10 жыл бұрын
The time is now and now is all we'll ever have. It's a great way to look at the world. Feels liberating, actually.
@ShakinJamacian
@ShakinJamacian 10 жыл бұрын
facereplacer It's liberating because there is little dogma. In our social world, we still live with much dogma, even if many of the unreligious bemoan at theological dogma. We talk about quotas that must be met, grades that must be kept, retirement plans that must be realized. *ALL* of this is a game of chasing some mist, some miasma that we say is important but only is ever important based on the position of popular opinion. Popular opinion is not a good litmus test, as the status quo is typically one to follow dogma the most sincerely, to not warp the line. In fact, doing what we say as a must is detrimental to ourselves, other forms of life, and the planet. In our world, we say we must keep our economy booming, even if it is a framework of inequality and environmental damage. We say illness and injury, natural occurrences in the world, are financial games that must be played, and many suffer and die to to lacking the emphasized tool in our game. Much of how we live is often imposed and fought in conflict against the world, but it is very rarely in accordance with the world itself. What nature is, in all of modern society, is not what we socially impose it is. Time is also a factor to this, as it's that idea - hanging onto a memory or thinking of a concept - that is the root to much of this. We kick our problems down the road for later even though they are problems now. One of Watts' greatest lectures, "A Conversation With Myself", has Alan mention how we are socially at a dead end. I think I fully understand him now. We *are* at a dead end for we are stuck in our ways, and our ways are in conflict with the world.
@ShelleyVaags
@ShelleyVaags 10 жыл бұрын
ShakinJamacian Just curious, something that has been bugging me while watching this. It all speaks of how we're doing everything wrong and how we should just live in the now and not be so worried about the future cause you can never pre determine it, but then how are we supposed to live our life? Should we not go to work and save up for that summer trip? Should we abandon responsibilities and go hitchhiking to a new country? It just bugs me how theres no real answer. And I figure there will never be one
@ShakinJamacian
@ShakinJamacian 10 жыл бұрын
Shelley Vaags You see, that becomes the problem of the way we think socially. When a cat is hungry, it simply eats. The idea of a summer trip is something of the future, it becomes more like a ladder, a goalpost that isn't here now. I think you can grasp that, but the issue then becomes what exactly do we *do* in the world, which seems to be the root of your inquiry. That is perhaps the hardest question to answer. In many ways, what we do normally is destructive. Outside of making the present moment impoverished by relying on the future, which is mostly conceptual, the means in which we live in all of this is a mess. The way we live valuing money has created a massive cesspit of problems by taking it so seriously and affirming it is objectively real, so much so we let people die and suffer for not having it. How we live in such a way causes harm to other life, as we look at them for motive and profit, and this entire framework which humankind lives today also affects the planet, which you can see with the present crisis of global warming. Economists have put the world with their hands behind their back, for any change to ease the problem of the climate will cause systemic damage to the framework of all developed nations. Much of like Watts said about the future numbing the present, I would wager how we live is in significant conflict with the natural state of affairs, the present scenario. A solution, and it doesn't even feel like a solution, was entertained by Watts in his video "A Conversation with Myself", where he argued we would be better off leaving the world alone, to stop imposing our social dogmas on the whole array of progress, fame, prestige, consumerism, all of that. How one really leaves the world alone when the state of affairs is one of damage and consistent conflict, I would assume, would be to focus on the basics; be engaged with whatever is happening in your life and go with that stream, wherever it leads you. This is not to say live today for tomorrow you'll die, but to live sincerely, with your desires of the present moment, but trying to pick and prod about it, and see what is the cause of suffering on some level, be it to you in the present, or other things around you. Don't aim for something down the road and kick the can to get there, be aware of now and pick up the can. It is very hard to do in modern societies, so the only thing you can do in that sense is drift away from much of that.

What beautiful words. As a 23 year old male with mental health issues and a physical illness, which is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, I have battled so much to take the lead and be in control of my mental health as well as my physical health. The more I tried, the more I resisted and the worse I felt. Finally I'm at this place called "the now". And I'm so glad I "get it" because I would be in more unnecessary pain. I'm learning to live everyday in the moment instead of living in an illusion. Thank you Mr Watts.

I feel the same. The only time I can truly feel relieved is when I go running. There is only here and now, hence traveling becomes so addicting. The feeling of leaving something behind, that's how you become closer to present. Not by sitting down, but by moving, constantly moving forward. After all, that's why we are not objects. One day we will all die, but let's make sure why die doing what we love.

Your brain gets rest and you slowly stepping into deep sleep as every statistic adult. So your Q is how to stop it? Keep having stress everyday as in school. Start to meditate. Don’t let your body to become a habit machine. But l agree with my mind. Why the hell worry about something that you repeatedly do over and over again. That’s why go sleep and rest moves automatically. Fuck the habits

The mind will always try and escape from the simplicity and beauty of this moment. Because it is not enough for the egoic mind to be satisfied with. Life is so much simpler and more peaceful and less serious than the mind pretends it is. Continue to live life and contribute to society, earn money and support your family but never be dissatisfied or try to escape the present moment. It is now and always will be now.

wow I needed this. I teared up. I pursued my artistic passion, dropping out of university, inspired by the words of alan watts to live my dream. I thought it would solve everything if I could only do art for a career in life. Well it happened. I got a career in animation after working hard attending school and practicing every day. But now... I still feel unsatisfied. There are people who are better than me and I still feel as though I'm not good enough. Not working for a good enough company, not working a good enough job. I don't feel talented. I feel like there's an endless skill gap between where i am and those above me. Truly, you need to live in the moment, otherwise you will never be happy with where you are.

This video makes me tear every time I hear it. So much love and pain in the explanation Alan Watts puts on the emphasis of living your life now. You never know how fun a moment was or how memorable a part of your life was until your looking back on it. Love it in the moment and you’ll live in the moment. I love you all. Enjoy your lives.

Alan Watts is as inspiring now as he has always been. I'm sure he would have approved of the current interest in Mindfulness. All about living in the moment, being truly present, seizing the moment, knowing your true nature. Is this modern spiruality without the need for a god?

Living fully now is quite difficult and I find it only ever happens when I am doing something I love. It usually involves music for me. When I meet someone who makes me feel like I can live in that one moment and there is no past or future, I know it is love. If this never happens, I can still be fulfilled knowing what I have learned from Alan Watts over the past 8 years. The beauty of Alan Watts is that you can be fulfilled and yet have nothing at all.

It feels like I am going backwards instead of Forwards cuz the reality of Life is hard, it will hit you in the face one day and you will no longer believe in yourself and you put up limits on yourself. That happend to me I hope I am not the only one.

You're not, dear friend. We all hit these moments. The best advice I could give you at times like this is to stop...slow down....and come in contact with the very thing we tend to avoid....yourself. Stop thinking about the world around you. Turn off the youtube, the news, the politicians, the conspiracy theorists, whatever. Unplug the movies and the video games for just a little while. Ignore your past. Ignore your future. Sit down in a place that is quiet and undisturbed, whether a place in your home, or a place outside where you know nobody will be. No sensory stimulation, like music or anything similar. First, sit quietly as long as you need, and then do this: accept yourself. Accept the world around you. Tell yourself that you are okay, and that you always where okay. Stop hating yourself, and allow yourself to fall in love with the real you again. Realize that the sense of security and peace that you've always sought was within, not without. Sit there and just live. Just be, and be okay with that. Know that whatever you do from there, wherever you go, you are okay. You will have to return to moments like these whenever you feel that you've lost your center. These will be times when you will need to find yourself, and the only place to find yourself is within. The answers are within you. They always have been. Go within.

Don’t you remember when you went first to school? You went to kindergarten and in kindergarten the idea was to push along so that you could get into first grade, and then push along so you could get in second grade, third grade, and so on going up and up. Then you went to high school and this was a great transition in life. And now the pressure is being put on, you must get ahead. You must get up the grades and finally be good enough to get to college. And then when you get to college, you’re still going step by step up to the great moment where you’re ready to go out into the world. And then when you go out into this famous world comes the struggle for success in profession or business. And again there seems to be a ladder before you something in which you’re reaching for all the time. And then suddenly. when you’re about 40-45 years old in the middle of life you wake up one day and you say “huh? I’ve arrived, and by joe I feel the same as I’ve always felt. In fact I’m not so sure I don’t feel a little bit cheated”. Because you see you were fooled. You were always living for somewhere where you aren’t. And while as I said it is of tremendous use for us to be able to look ahead in this way and plan. There is no use planning for a future which when you get to it and it becomes the present you won’t be there. You’ll be living in some other future which hasn’t yet arrived. So in this way one is never able to actually inherit and enjoy the fruits of ones actions. You can’t live at all unless you can fully now.

Live fully now! What a beautiful and powerful message! Such a short phrase and yet so powerful, accompanying this brief video. It reminds me of the message of Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now," a book that taught me so much and greatly reoriented my spiritual journey.

Every single moment we work and struggle and worry about a future that hasn't arrived yet, and when it does, we're not happy with it, maybe just for a moment. And very quickly after those few moments, you'll get back into worrying and struggle for whatever you might think it will make you happier, getting into the same vicious cycle. The philosophers have a simple explanation even for the most difficult problems (or worries). That proves, the "SOULution" (as i like to call it) is always, right in front of us, but we've "zoomed" that negative instant of our life in our mind, that we can't hear, see, think anything else. External world is just a reflection of your inner world (beliefs, thoughts, emotions). When we create/attract a problem, we shouldn't react. But instead observe what is happening and, instead of "Why is this happening to me?" start asking ourselves "How can i disolve/resolve/heal this situation in my life?" Have you noticed, every time there's a problem in your life, you're also there? :) Same thing with the mind. Have you noticed how, every time you ask yourself "Why am i so useless? Why am i so negative? Why am i so....?", the mind always, with no exception, gives you answers to the question you kept repeating ? Ask your mind the right questions, observe and question everything and think about healing, not destruction. About solutions, not the problems. About conscious choices, not automatic reactions. Sorry for the long comment. That's what i've been inspired to post. Why here? I have no idea. I just felt it in this flow state of mind. Wish you all the best and Thank You, for the video :)
