He also didn't want to when the scripted had him shouting “F**k him!” at the end of the climax. but John Landis and Eddie Murphy convinced him that it was just one take and that’s it. And for one take, that was a pretty convincing one, that feels in line with his character, not caring about his brother.

The Duke and Duke brothers (notable old actors Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) actually made a cameo appearance as the same characters in the 1988 Eddie Murphy movie 'Coming To America'. And in the bathroom scene when the two brothers are secretly speaking while Valentine (Eddie Murphy's character) is hiding in the bathroom stall, the actor Don Ameche did not want to use the 'N' word since he personally found it reprehensible even to use as a line in a movie. So the director etc had to convince him to say the word. That is how good of an actor he was...he hated using words like that, but he was still able to convince the viewer that his character had no problem using such language.

Frank Oz also played the property guard (similar role) when Jake (John Belushi) was getting out of Joliet Prison in the Ackroyd/Belushi movie The Blues Brothers "one soiled". The 2 duke brothers (Don Ameche and Frank Bellamy) were also in Eddie's "Coming To America" movie as 2 bums that Eddie gives a stack of money to "Randolph, We're BACK!!". The character crossovers in THIS movie plus the Blues Brothers, and Coming to America make them even MORE funny!!

It's the same story that the musical "My Fair Lady" is based off of, which is "Pygmalion" by George Bernard Shaw. Granted they used different characters but the story is essentially the same. Next to Oscar Wilde, Shaw was one of the greatest English playwrights of the Victorian era.

I've enjoyed this movie many times over the years but I've just noticed a MAJOR thing that maybe NO ONE has noticed before! @ 22:41 Randolph says: "I think we should hold off on SWITCHING THEM BACK though, UNTIL..."! So, DESPITE what Mortimer had just said in his still-fresh anger of the moment, Randolph had NO THOUGHT of NOT bringing Winthorpe back! -And a moment later, Mortimer AGREES to switching them back AFTER the crop report swindle was pulled off!!! 😮
@ernestitoe18 сағат бұрын
The little guy who takes Winthorpe's coat, whom he addresses as Folsey, was George Folsey, Jr., who only acted 4 times but had a long career in film behind the scenes. The servant at the club, Ezra, to whom the Dukes gave $5, was Avon Long, a great dancer for several decades. He performed at the Cotton Club in Harlem during the 1930s and was on Broadway a number of times, including in Porgy and Bess, playing Sportin' Life the hustler/cocaine dealer. Both Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy were in the casts of Saturday Night Live. Aykroyd was in the first cast, Murphy in the second.

Great movie, Murphy and Aykroyd are legends. The same time of this movie a Major connected adoption agency in NYC was getting paid by a researcher to place twins/triplets/etc into multiple homes from low to high income and monitor them through various 'checkups' , to determine if what you become in life is reflective of Nature or Nuture. They made a documentary about it called "Three Identical Strangers", of triplets who found each other in their late teens. Crazy story.

I had seen Trading Places over a dozen times. Genius of a movie. It’s all about the circumstances and luck as well as potential. We see that in Back to the Future 2, given a head start Biff has the potential to become a casino mogul billionare. I believe it was not intentional but the film makers made a huge gaffe with that one. I picked it up after several viewings.

In the years, of course, the movie has became more "visible" for me. The, like said, "social standards", backround of both characters etc. But I still like the humor and I still can laugh about the same "old" gags.😁😁 In these times that movie is a rare gem and I watch it 3 or 4 times in a year.

An interesting piece of trivia regarding this film. The orange futures scheme seems like it ought to be some kind of illegal insider trading, right? This is futures though, not the stock market. At the time of the film the scheme was entirely legal and if attempted in real life would have worked. Such schemes werern't made illegal until 2010. The law that made it illegal is known as the "Eddie Murphy Rule" and it was inspired by the film.

Normally yes. But these two have already shown themselves to be stingy cheapskates. Mortimer: "We seem to be paying some of our employees an awful lot of money." Louis: "Can't get around the old minimum wage, Mortimer." My guess is; They won't pay someone to sign them when they can, but more importantly they want to see every check written to keep track of all the money spent by the company. They don't want one dollar to slip by them unnoticed. I've had bosses of large companies that have said "nobody signs checks but me".
