So the short of what happened at the end was because the orange crops weren't affected by winter, then there would large amounts of cheap oranges. The Dukes thought the crops were affected, so instead of selling high then buying low, they bought high then sold low. Aykroyd and Murphy knew the real crop report so they sold high and bought low. The numbers they showed on the boards meant that Aykroyd and Murphy made contracts to buy oranges at $0.29 a pound in units of a thousand, and also made contracts to sell those exact same oranges at $1.42 a pound, making a profit of 545%. Oranges are traded in units of a thousand pounds, with several units per single contract, and you could hear traders talking about buying and selling hundreds of contracts. It's not exactly known how much they invested with the life savings and the money meant for Beaks, but the current guesstimate is in the tens of millions, possibly over 100 million. What was done to achieve such success (trading commodities on inside information obtained from the government) wasn't illegal back when the movie was made, but when it was made illegal in 2010, it was appropriately named the Eddie Murphy Rule.

Their seed money, including the investments from the hooker and the butler, was probably not much more than $100K. They leveraged that into access to the trading floor and margin for their initial short sales, which is where the REAL profit happened. After they closed their short positions, I'd guess they were up at LEAST $100M, perhaps $300M. Enough to buy a passage-maker yacht and cruise the tropics, anyway.

Love Denholm Elliott as Coleman. He has never had many leading roles but he tends to shine in his co-starring roles such as Marcus Brody in the Indiana Jones films. His scene-stealing abilities led Gabriel Byrne, his co-star in Defence of the Realm, to say: "Never act with children, dogs, or Denholm Elliott."

So many brilliant moments in this film. Just subtle movements of the eyes, expression that shifts ever so slightly. He's a butler, so he's not supposed to really voice his opinion, but though his face stays relatively neutral, it still speaks volumes. The dismay at finding the two undressing by the fire is great. Speaking to Winthorp through the crack in the door, pretending to not know who he is: He's being paid by the Duke brothers to go through with this charade, but though his boss is a jerk, Coleman is not without pity; there is a flash of regret in his eyes, just before he closes the door. And my absolute favorite: "Eggnog?" SO much boiled into that single, simple word. Just great acting. Love Denholm Elliott.

1. Aykroyd made his bones (as did Murphy) first on the original Saturday Night Live. 2. He also worked with John Belusi in the Blues Brothers. 3. Beeks is played by the late Paul Gleason. He also played Richard/Dick Vernon in "The Breakfast Club" and the idiot deputy police chief in "Die Hard". 4. The police officer that tells Louis the powder is PCP is Frank Oz the voice for Kirmit, Yoda and many of the Muppets. 5. The studio didn't want Jamie Lee Curtis for the roll of Ophilia because they only saw her as a scream queen, but Landis insisted on casting her. Good for us. 5. I like how sympathetic Coleman is to Billy Ray. You can tell early on that he has no love for the Dukes. 6. In the restaurant when Billy Ray is about to speak it's a play on the old EF Hutton commercial. "When EF Hutton speaks everybody listens" 7. One of the most paused scenes in VHS history.😍🥰🤩 (JLC) 8. I wonder where Winthorp got all those drugs (and the gun) for only $50 Even in 1983. 9. When Don Ameche says "Fuck him" regarding his brother he insisted that they use only one take because it didn't want to swear at all. He also had an issue with the N word too.

In Italy the film (title in Italian "Una poltrona per due" - "A chair for two") has become a cult. For almost 30 years it has been regularly broadcast during the Christmas period (since 2008 it has always been broadcast on Christmas Eve) and every time it achieves at least 15% share despite knowing all the scenes by heart. This despite the fact that the share of old films on generalist TV is now at minimum levels. Of course also seen last night.

Yes, this movie was before Coming to America. If you've seen that movie there is a clip where Eddie Murphy's character hands a paper bag of money to two "homeless" people. They are the "Duke brothers" from this movie (Trading Places).

The part where Winthorp is eating the salmon through that disgusting Santa beard has to be one of the grossest/funny things ever.

I think Jim Belushi got the part of the "party gorilla" because Aykroyd pulled a couple strings due to the fact that Jim's brother John was the other half of the Blues Brothers bit with Aykroyd. Filming started in December '82 and John died that previous March.

It's definitely a Xmas movie! I watch it every year since I was a kid. Only rivalled by George C. Scott's A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life. They don't make movies like this, the happy-go-lucky racism, the deadpan humour, everything. So politically incorrect by today's standards yet so wholesome. This movie is perfect.

Jamie Lee Curtis had $42,000 saved which is like $125,000 today. They're in New York but that's even more money depending what part of the country you're in

This WAS before coming to America, and in that movie Mortimer and Randolph Duke have a cameo as two homeless people in Queens! Also, when this movie came out, insider trading was not illegal in the US. The Insider Trading Act of 1988 made it illegal then.

It's nice seeing American grown-ups, who don't have sticks up their bums, react to this movie. Hadn't seen this since I was a kid and only remembered two things, the salmon eating and Jamie Lee Curtis's endowments.

Glad to see this in your menu of reactions and you killed it. You're intelligent enough to recognize the wrongness of some topics without trying to critique in our current pc mallaze. It's a comedy, not a docuseries, and never stops being funny. One of the best reactions to this movie on YT

Among the main stars, Coleman is played by Denholm Elliot who played Marcus Brody in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and the guy in the gorilla costume was James Belushi

If you have never seen Cocoon (1985 - Oscar: best effects, visual effects), Don Ameche (Oscar: best actor in a supporting role) was in that too. It also has "eat yer oatmeal and watch your blood sugar {dia-bee-tus}" Wilford Brimley.

I first saw this in about 1988 when i was 8, i've loved it since, i was already a lover of Halloween and Beverly Hills Cop. In Scream Randy quite rightly says Jamie Lee didn't go topless until Trading Places in 83.

This is one of my all time favorite movies because it was the first movie I seen that was indeed shot in Philadelphia 😍 so seeing Center City, SEPTA Bus’s and ACME groceries stores… just a full on movie made where I lived was so cool to me, it’s wad 10-15 years after it came out my first time watching but still this an 6th sense are the first movies I noticed were actually filmed in Philly

@@terrycoolidge9511 of course… I’ve seen all of them, just trading places was the first movie where I made the connection that the city in this movie was actually my city ( before that I assumed every time I seen some place on tv with tall buildings it was Center City) then it was explained to me that that movie was really made in PA an everything else like … Home Alone 2 wasn’t made in philly it was New York, I thought some wild stuff as a kid, I remember thinking that black an white was just how people were in the olden days & color just came in the 50s or 60s. Then I also remember having a old rotary telephone and the only number I could dial for some reason was zero, and I would call the operator to ask for the phone numbers to the fictional characters on the Nickelodeon shows I’d watch or Al Bundy… I got a whipping for like 60$ on information calls 😂
