Traditional dancers, Yakel Kustom Village Tanna Vanuatu, 1991 (HD)

Yakel village in West Tanna is one of the Kustom villages that belong to the John Frum and Prince Philip movements. The germ of these movements was sown in the 1920s and 30s when there was rising resentment on the island towards the economic power that the Presbyterian church held on Tanna. Several leaders emerged who encouraged the population to turn away from the church and return to Kustom beliefs and practices. A large proportion of the population still follows these beliefs to the present day.
Five men from the village became the stars of the UK Channel 4 documentary series "meet the Natives" when they travelled to Britain and met Prince Philip.
