I recently learned that all of my East Prussian "German" ancestors were actually Baltic people who were forced to speak German and adopt German names many generations ago. I do not have a single drop of actual German blood. It's heartbreaking how long it took me to find out about my real roots

There is something very powerful in our spirit. Uprooted due to ideological, political and economical shifts, we have forgotten Baltic power. Being a person removed from my roots by rather seemingly rational decisions by my parents, there is this deeply entrenched, a part of ancient way inside I, that seeps out to the surface with furious energy and melancholy when listening to folk from my ancestry. When observing other individuals from the region, we are indeed still a collection of old ways, skills, know how and deep rooted honorable ways, people of tradition in the way that the spirit of Balts still shows even though we are so much more different then before, with so many more learned alien attributes, being something that we are not. There is indeed a call to come back that I am increasingly experiencing at this point in time. Turime grysti visi atgal i karalyste...

I'm 3/8 Prussian. My parents are from Lithuania. My mother's father was full blooded Old Prussian. She recalled hearing his relatives speak a language she did not understand which was different from Lithuanian. Prussian is close to the original Indo-European tongue. As such it has more in common with Latin, Aryan, even Engish. Being so original it has great pure spirit and truth in it, since languages get corrupted over time. Prussian and Curonian need to be preserved along with the ancient godly values where everything one did was sacred!

@miglius1992
@miglius1992 4 жыл бұрын
@patjoni A language which is complex in its grammar rules is old language. Modern Lithuanian is to complex to say at least... Like Sanskrit, also has a complex grammar... If a language has not many forms its modern and old is much more complex forms and grammar or no grammar roles at all.. There is a lot of factories that make a language old. So you got hear one 1 of them... You and me we are not the once that says that, if Linguistics since the 13th sentry keep saying that Baltic language is the oldest... You question in relevant to why its... There is a lot of knowledge on internet for you to read about what makes a language old, and you will see there is much to talk about...

The pronunciation of Old Prussian is similar to Lithuanian but not exactly the same (accentuation differs). If you could let me know the words in question, I could record what they're supposed to be pronounced like. This song is in Prussian dialect of Lithuanian language though. Guys, stop confusing German Prussia with the ACTUAL old nation of Prussians. Before Germany of any kind was even a thing, a baltic tribe, linguistically similar to Latvians and Lithuanians lived there. They were fierce warriors and kept raiding Polish lands, so the Poles called for Teutonic Knights for help. They slaughtered the Prussians, and then colonized the lands. And thats how this fake "Prussian Empire" as we know it, was born

At the end of the XIII century, in the late 80s, the Teutonic Order finally conquered all the Prussian tribes.On 15 February 1386, Jogaila was baptised in Kraków, married Jadwiga and was crowned King of Poland. In February-March 1387, the Lithuanian nobility were baptised in Vilnius, followed by the townspeople and other residents.The development of the Catholic Church in Latvia took place from the 11th to the 13th century. Due to close ties with Sweden and Denmark (where Christianity was introduced as early as the 9th century)

Translation of the lyrics: Oh, thrush, you dear thrush, you mottled bird, don't jump over the road! / I have a riffle ready, it is loaded with silver. / I shot once - the feathers got dusty, the earth trembled. / I shot for the second time - it didn't get up anymore, the woods hummed. / Oh, hum and drone, you trees of woods! My brothers are still little. / My dear brothers will grow up, they will cut down the trees in the wood. / Oh, they've cut the trees down and hewed them in the woods, then chopped them up / They've made a colorful manor by the wide road / At each corner there was a lilac bush with nine branches / In each of their tips a cuckoo cuckooed every morning / They cuckooed until they've cuckooed out a daughter from her mother / Oh, I will go to the land where people live without working / I will pull the green silk though the seas and the lagoons / Then I will get to the land where people live without working / Under the turf, under the meadow - there people live without working // Original lyrics: Strazde strazdeli, raibas paukšteli, Nešokinėk per kelią! Turiu flintelę užgintavotą, Sidabrėliu lioduotą. Sykelį šoviau - plunksnos dulkėjo, Žemužė padrebėjo. Antrą kai šoviau - jau nebekėlė, Giružė ūžtelėjo. Oi, ūžkit gauskit, girios medačiai! Maži mano brolyčiai. Oi, užaugs užaugs mano brolyčiai, Iškirs girios medačius. Giružėj kirto, giružėj tašė, Pagiružy sutašė. Pasikurdinkis margą dvarelį, Ant plačio vieškelėlio. Ant kiek kampelio po alyvėlę Su devyniom šakelėm. Į viršūnėlę po gegužėlę, Kas rytužy kukavo. Tolei kukavo, kol iškukavo Dukrytę nuo mamužės. Oi, eisiu eisiu į tą žemelę, Kur gyvena be darbelio. Persitraukdinsiu žalią šilkelį Per jūres, per marias. Tai aš nueisiu į tą žemelę, Kur gyven' be darbelio, Po velėnėlė, po smilginėle - Čia gyvena be darbelio...

This song is a traditional folk song from East Prussia sung in Lithuanian language. This is a dialect of Lithuanian, not the older West Balt tongues of Prussian or Curonian wich wee along the sea. These old Balts were mostly killed by the Russians in 1945, and their oldest language nearly disappeared. The song is very beautiful, but modern Lithuanuans sadly have a slurred Slavic accent instead of the proper ancient crisp and clear pronunciation.
@Balticfolk
@Balticfolk 4 жыл бұрын
You're right about some things and wrong about many others. Old Prussians weren't killed by Russians in 1945, they were instead decimated by Germans during the Northern Crusades (Old Balts were still heathen at that time) and the last of them perished in the Great Northern War plague outbreak of 18th century - that was long before WWII. Now, as for the "Prussian" of 20th century that you're writing about, you probably mean the Prussian-German dialect - it was only called "Prussian" location-wise, NOT ethnicity-wise, same as Prussian-Lithuanian dialect that you can hear in this video. Both Germans and Lithuanians were newcomers in Prussia. As for your remark about "slurred Slavic accent", you're just talking out've yer arse here. Lithuanian language had roughly the same impact from Slavic as Old Prussian did, as it had been sheltered from Western Slavs by none other than Old Prussians and Yotvingians (Sudovians) for much of its development while the East Slavic influence was late and negligible.

@@Balticfolk I defer to your knowledge on most things. I know about the German oppression etc. My Prussian grandpa didn't like the Germans there. Experts say the few remaining West Balts were wiped out largely in 1945. I hear Klaipėda was reduced from about 43000 to 8000 population in late 1945 by the Russians taking inhuman revenge on all in the old East Prussian area, German and Balt alike... Experts and my family called the prewar non-German folks in the Klaipėda area "Balts" to distinguish them from regular Lithuanians. Not sure if that included some Curonians with Prussians etc.

This has nothing to do with Slavs and everything to do with Prussia. It is in the East-Prussian dialect of Lithuanian language which belongs to the Baltic branch of Indo-European language family - same as now extinct Old Prussia which the aborigines of Prussia spoke.

coffinthief, you are right that Old Prussian language is a different thing than German Ostpreußisch dialect but it is also different from the language used in this song. In this song you can hear Lithuanian dialect endemic to East-Prussia which had developed after the 1422 Treaty of Melno. If you would like to hear the original Old Prussian language, you can do so here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqHTdI16ipyNoMk

the prussian was a dialect of german language, which has disappeared after 1945, and the prussian germans were replaced by russians in Kaliningrad (old Königsberg) and Lithuanian in Klaipeda (old Memel)

Rumaliza, part of what you wrote is false: Prussian was first and foremost a separate language which had nothing to do with Germans by whom it was later anihilated: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Prussian_language Germans have never constituted a majority in Klaipeda region, it was already mostly Lithuanian (hence it merged with Lithuania), most of it is in blue in this German ethnographic map (meaning that Lithuanians were a majority): gauss.suub.uni-bremen.de/suub/hist/servlet/servlet.hmap?id=245837&blatt=0

I see, well ok, thank you for your informations, i don't know there was original baltic people before, i always think the "true" prussians were the germans who were expelled from there by soviets, and i think lithuanians were russians deported there to replace the germans. I understand better :)

IchBin Lecker This song is actually as Prussian as one can possibly get: it was recorded by Ludwig Rhesa in the late 18th century from the local peasants of East Prussia and from the song's archaic melody and lyrics ethnomusicologists can discern that 18th century is only the date of when it was recorded, while the date of its creation must be at least several centuries older. If you are interested in the authentic folklore of East Prussia, you can find more traditional folk songs as well as their German translations in Rhesa's book published in 1843: archive.org/stream/dainos00reza#page/n5/mode/2up Prussians were not Germans from the get go, they were a Baltic nation which was related to the present day Lithuanians and Latvians, it was only during the crusade era when the Germans first showed up in Prussia, genocided and expelled most of the natives to Lithuania and appropriated their toponym "Prussia". But after the treaty of Melno some of those expelled people were allowed to return, though having spent several centuries living in Lithuania they had already switched to Lithuanian language hence the original lyrics of this folk song are in Prussian-Lithuanian dialect.

+Schan Ninla Not really. The Prussians were a Baltic people with a language somewhat similar to Lithuanian and Latvian. But they were chased away or killed by the teutonic knights, and then the Germans took over the area. Archaeologists have found traces and objects left after the Prussians, which showes how they had a language related to today's Lithuanian and Latvian, as well as having a religion similar to the Vikings Norse religion. That's what I at least found researching about them.

+Markus Thiede Well, archaeologists have found proof that the teutonic knights either killed them or chased them away, and then claiming the land for themselfs. So yes, the Prussians were aldready extinct as a people when the duchy was established.

+Markus Thiede Lad, your history knowledge is very poor indeed, especially Prussian, Curonian and Skalvian, so before posting any claims, study them first, dig deeper, way deeper then your current education level is, learn some pre-history of Teutonic order , then post.
