As the guardian deity of the seventeen villages of Ikoma Valley, this ancient shrine enshrines Mount Ikoma as its sacred object. Mentioned as "Ikoma Tsuhiko Shrine" in the "Sokoku Fudoki" during the 3rd year of Emperor Yūryaku's reign (458), it is listed as "Ikoma Niimasu Ikoma Tsuhiko Shrine, two deities" in the Engishiki Jinmyōchō, ranked as a grand shrine, receiving monthly and new harvest offerings. During the Kamakura period, Hachiman deities were also enshrined, resulting in the current seven deities. Although there were eleven temple-shrines in the Heian period, they were abolished during the Meiji era's separation of Shinto and Buddhism, and the shrine was designated a prefectural shrine. The sacred forest covering the shrine grounds is a natural monument of Nara Prefecture.
