Traditional Japan “Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine” 2024.7.15

The deities enshrined at Sumiyoshi Taisha are the three gods Sokotsutsu-no-onomikoto, Nakatsutsu-no-onomikoto, and Uwatsutsu-no-onomikoto, who were born when Izanagi performed a purification ritual in the sea, along with Empress Jingū. They are revered as protectors of maritime voyages and also respected as gods of poetry and literature. Empress Jingū enshrined them in present-day Sumiyoshi upon her return from the Silla expedition. Later, they were honored as the Four Deities of Sumiyoshi and classified as a Myojin Taisha, one of the Twenty-Two Shrines, the Ichinomiya of Settsu Province, and an Imperial Shrine.
