Join us as try eating traditional Japanese Breakfast in Osaka, Japan at a 24 hour restaurant we found near the apartment we were staying at in Osaka, Japan. Given our struggles with jet lag we had already been up for several hours when we ventured off to grab some breakfast in Osaka. It was so early the metro stations had not even opened and we had more of a hangover crowd rather than businessmen and women heading off to work. We noticed this little 24 hour restaurant nearby Nagahoribashi Station, next door to Yoshinoya. Sorry, we forget the name of this place and it isn't on Google maps but if you find the Yoshinoya just outside of this station you'll see the restaurant just to the right of it.
In terms of the traditional Japanese breakfast we ended up eating a lot of standard items such as rice, fish, tofu, miso soup, ginger, Nattō, tea and other things. It felt like a very healthy way to start the day with decent amount of protein, functional carbs and nothing to sugary. In fact it was more of a salty and savoury breakfast which we enjoyed because we didn't have a sugar crash afterwards.
Have you had breakfast in Japan before? What did you try? If you are Japanese or a foreigner based in Japan do you feel this is a typical Japanese breakfast or did we miss out on some dishes? What do you typically have for breakfast at home wherever you are watching this video from? Please let us know in the comment section below.

Traditional Japanese Breakfast in Osaka, Japan Food Travel Video Transcript:
Good morning guys. It is another early start for this jet lagged duo. It is right now it is 4:52 in the morning and we've already been up for what an hour and a half? Since 2:30.
We figured since we are up early let's go have some breakfast but not any breakfast. This is going to be a traditional Japanese breakfast. We noticed a place when we were up jet lagged the previous morning it was open 24 hours. It is a chain restaurant and we're going to go there and grab some traditional Japanese breakfast. Let's go eat.
We just finished placing our order. We got a little ticket from the machine. And then we handed it the ticket to the server. She ripped it in half. We get to keep this. Breakfast is here.
For Japanese breakfast we did a little bit of research. To see what the typical dishes are. And it usually includes steamed rice. Miso soup. A protein like grilled fish. We've got some tofu going on. We've got a raw egg. This looks like some kind of porridge. Um it says nori. So a dry seasoned seaweed. I'm seeing a little bit of that sprinkled on this thing. There are some additional side dishes we might order too.
I mean you can always go to the machine and order some individual little dishes. Yeah. If you want more rice or if you want more egg. It also says Nattō fermented soy beans. And I did notice that on the menu. We just didn't get the meal that comes with the soy beans. I'll probably I'll see if I can order that later. Fermented soy beans? I think we got the main items of a Japanese breakfast.
In total came to 490 and 590 Yen. Yeah. Which in total was $9.80 USD. Incredible value. It was a complete breakfast. I really liked having protein and some healthy carbs with the rice and just there is a lot of variety and it was thoughtfully prepared too. I hope you guys enjoyed taking a look at this traditional Japanese breakfast and we'll have more food and travel videos for you coming soon from Japan.
This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine.

The seaweed in the miso soup is call wakame and not nori. It's green onion not chives 😂😂😂 The slimy thing is the Japanese mountain yam

Welcome to Japan! I'm Japanese. Japanese people usually eat cold tofu 5:50, tororo 7:42, and raw egg with a little soy sauce. I think they'll taste better if you put a little soy sauce on each of them. I hope you are enjoying your Japan trip :)

When I was in Japan, I ate a traditional Japanese breakfast every morning. The small hotel I stayed in Goi served the rice in a bowl with a lid. The server showed us how to put the raw egg on top of the hot rice and then put on the lid. In 4-5 minutes, we had soft-boiled egg on the rice.

@@victormalyar9200 you are confusing unhealthy and (very) potential food risks. Soft boiled egg is healthy BUT IF there are salmonella in the coop where they were produced AND if the outside of the shell where the bacteria POSSIBLY reside comes into contact with the raw egg before it is served there is a CHANCE that the egg will contain salmonella. Even IF an egg contains salmonella you might not get sick if there were only a few bacteria transmitted and you're otherwise healthy. These eggs are most likely freshly opened for every single serving so there is no time for salmonella to multiply in the egg itself and it is up to the customer to decide if he wants it at all. Now that are many ifs so it makes sense to avoid serving raw or soft egg in situations like catering and canteens, where food is mass produced, kept warm for extended periods of time, self-served or mass served by waitstaff. Especially since many people would be affected if a batch of egg-product was contaminated and served during times like a lunch rush. But in a reasonably clean kitchen that produces single servings or at your own home there is little to no reason to avoid raw egg unless you are immune compromised.

Natto is suppose to be stirred 25 times. and usually eaten with rice. You either like it or you don't. What most people don't like is the smell and texture. Proper eating rice. Hold the bowl in non dominate hand take some food place on rice and bring the bowl closer to you mouth and pick up rice and food with chopsticks to you mouth.

1) The raw egg is supposed to be poured over the steam rice after it was beaten well and added a bit of soy sauce. It’s much better and very tasty that way since the steam white rice has no flavour and raw egg itself doesn’t taste good. 2) The grated mountain yam (the one looks like porridge) can be eaten straight out of the bowl (you might want to drip some soy sauce if it’s not seasoned) in that case it’s easier to grab and hold the bowl and slurp it out of it. Or, some people like to pour over the white steam rice maybe with some of the raw eggs together, stir it a bit and eat them all together. That’s my favourite way to eat the three. 3) The fermented soy beans, AKA “natto”, you need to stir it very well until they all become super slimy and stringy. Then add some sauce or soy sauce then stir it a bit again then pour over on the white steam rice and eat it. It will be super stringy and slimy when you eat it so you might need to keep collecting the strings very quickly with the chop sticks as you circle around in the air between the mouth and the bowl. (I know this looks so hilarious) 4) You can mix the natto and raw eggs in the bowl together with some soy sauce added then pour that over the rice as well. You can also mix all three of raw eggs, natto and grated mountain yum, add a bit of stir with chop sticks then eat them with rice, too! I love this ultimate way, the all three combination with rice. It’s so heavenly! 💕💖☁️🌈

Miso soup is the best. I recently just made it at home and it is so amazing! It's definitely a staple in Japanese cooking too. I love how most Asian countries don't actually see breakfast as a disgustingly sweet beginning of the day, and just eat normal food instead. This meal looks so amazing!

That’s the spirit. The saying goes - When in Rome, do what the Romans do. I like that you’re not afraid to try and challenge yourselves and experience new foods when in a new culture. If after you try something and you don’t like it, at least you made the effort. And who knows, you may actually end up changing your taste buds or find a new taste favorite that you can’t resist eating. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Sorry for over boarding on the sayings. BTW - I like Natto (fermented beans) which I eat with some chopped spring onions and sometimes with a touch of soy sauce and raw egg mixed with rice and soy sauce. Can’t wait to see what you guys are up to next. Thanks!

12:16 Thats chilled silken tofu with scallions, ginger with some soy drizzled on top (or probably a mix of soy and mirin aka noodle soup base )and often topped with bonito flakes (dried fish flakes) They eat it cold in japan for breakfast. Theres a similar dish thats cooked called Agedashi Tofu and is lightly battered or coated with cornstarch and fried and served on/in shallow sweet/savory broth (dashi/soy & mirin) topped with scallion and grated daikon and sprinkling of bonito - which 'moves' as it hits the hot liquid!. Served with a steaming bowl of sticky rice its divine and really easy to make at home.

Ha ha, I know how bad jetlags can be for the first few days when you get to Japan from the States. As for Japanese dishes in general, many items are typically consumed with a bit of soy sauce. I personally would never eat tofu without soysauce, unless it's boiled or simmered in some flavored sauce. Same goes with the Nagaimo/tororoimo (grated mountain yam) ,raw egg and natto(fermented soybeans). All are quite often ( actually in most cases) poured over the rice. The server had actually pointed you towards the rice and told you that you can get additional rice, when you politely acknowledged her. Japanese would probably have a bowl of rice with the tororoimo then serve another bowl with the raw egg, or natto. You may want to try the yaki-saba (grilled mackeral not "yaki-soba" ) with daikon oroshi (grated large Japanese radish) with a bit of soy sauce. It balances out the oil/fat and makes many things taste more refreshing. I love it and use it with anything from steaks, to salmon, ikuta (salmon eggs) and even okura .

Thank you very much! It took us almost a week to get over it completely without taking random naps. Really appreciate the detail of explaining the dishes. The daikon oroshi sounds so refreshing.

You're supposed to whip the Natto until it turns white and frothy. And the egg goes on top of the rice. The rice then gets covered and the rice cooks the egg.

I can't believe with all the adventurous food you guys eat the raw egg is what throws you LOL it's so good you just break it over your rice. It adds a real richness. Nothing better than some raw egg over toast or rice with some salt! Sunny side up is usually my favorite.
