I’ve used floss bodies like that in the past, but many tyers now seem to just use a thread body. Are there advantages to either over the other?

Speed of tying being a big one. From a fishing perspective, the floss may be a better choice as once it's had a few fish on it, the floss gets all ripped up and adds a bit of movement to the fly.
