To be good at archery, is to have consistent form. the hand pressure in same spot, the string alignment the same, the anchor point, the draw length all have to be the same for each and every shot, then once you've mastered your form, then you have to aim, compensating for gravity's effect on your arrow at different yardages. Also all your arrows have to be the same. This info is for new shooters . Good Archers already know this, that's why they hit what there aiming at. So having said this , the guy in this traditional bowhunting video, knows what he's talking about.

I use to be a traditional bow hunter. I suffered a severe injury in 2001 that left me disabled. I contracted a really bad nerve disorder called Reflex Symptomatic Dystrophy (RSD) aka (CRPS) from the trauma. It seems they change the name of it every 10 years or so, and that’s just because they still don’t fully understand it. It has really done a number on my entire nervous system, but mainly affected my dominant left arm, and then spread to my dominant left leg. I really really miss it!!

I would recommend practicing at distances right up to 30-40 yards for the reason below: I once went hunting with a buddy who only "winged" a goat and from what I could see it wouldn't survive, but suffer a slow death having a badly injured leg. I immediately took up the chase and followed the group for about a mile and as I began to tire the lagging, injured goat was about to disappear over a ridge into deep bush and I knew I had to at least try at a distance of about 35-40 yards. Muscle memory kicked in and even though I was exhausted the arrow flew straight to the heart on a rear flanking shot behind the ribs and it dropped instantly. Call it "luck" but the practice at longer distances trains your eye for such a shot as these.

This is refreshing to see, I’ve been saying it for 40 years! Tremendous advice and so spot on, actually this applies to all forms of archery hunting but with modern compound equipment the max range should be 30 yards. I’ve always practiced at longer distances ( say 40 yards), but only because I find that it sharpens my short range accuracy. Longest shot I’ve ever taken at a game animal is 21 yards and have shot many inside 12 yards.

I've shot competitive archery and bow hunted , most of my life. having said that , its real simple. the farther you are back from your target , the more your mistake in form and yardage are magnified. Its a triangular effect. So you have to determine what yardage you can consistently, with your ability to keep all your shots in the kill zone. On a deer, maybe the size of a paper plate, right behind the shoulder area, but not too high.

@@SamkoTradBow how do you control your scent?. I use the scent washes and the spray with boiled pine and cedar needles. It's got me closer but they can still wind me sometimes. I feel I would be busted by my scent at that range.

Great topic, my max distance is 15m beyond that I feel it's too risky to do an ethical shot with my heavy arrows and bow weight. I make up for it by using tactics and scouting to find places where I'll be at best advantage. I’m thinking of taking on the challenge of a sling bow that shoots 180fps and it looks to be deadly accurate out to s 20 - 30 yards ! @@SamkoTradBow yes they definitely look fun and they look like they could be modified and made better as anything else in the hunting industry , I believe it would be a great challenge and tool to have in your arsenal ! I really think it would shine in encounters if you needed to hunt in a tree 🌲 full of limbs and it would be great to tuck up in a group of trees 🌳 and also if you wanted to tuck up in a bush , overgrowth, briar patches etc. and you can still effectively and efficiently maneuver and not worry about not being able to draw your bow , so u can definitely hide & hunt in most any situation and not worry about movement and having to set up around your weapon and how you can efficiently draw it ! The sling bow becomes one with you and no extra area is needed outside of you yourself is all u have to consider making room for when setting up to hunt …

I generally have been a rifle hunter my whole life. Average 300-700 yards. I have this problem of thinking I cannot get close. I never took my bow out for the first four years because I couldn't get accurate at 20-40 yards. Eventually I took out my compound because I just really wanted to use an arrow. I tried to spot and stalk and walked up to within 10 yards on over 20 deer that day. The next year I set up in a tree and first day had 7 deer within 12 yards. I'm no longer afraid to take out my trad bows. I just didn't realize I'd get that close. Be patient and slow, and play the wind, and you WILL walk up on them. Or they will walk to you.

All good advice. 2 things. I use a 3 arrow quiver. There is no need for all those arrows on a hunt. 1 for the kill. 1 as a backup. 1 field point for a practice tree stand shot. Second is that nearly 45 degree cant of his bow. This is going to be detrimental for new shooters. Keep your bow close to vertical as you can. You will increase your accuracy. That extreme cant is a modern American phenomenon. It wasn’t done in the past or in ancient times. Only barely enough to keep that arrow on your knuckle
@SamkoTradBow

Maybe for target archery. In bowhunting canting a bow is important as it let's me get low to the ground, get the limbs out of the way when shooting down out of trees and gets the riser out of my way in my view. And I don't need any cant to keep the arrow on my knucke. I do it for the reasons above. And if I only carried 2 broadheads I'd go hungry.

I like the bullet tip style points from Ethics archery. I've hit wood, rocks, and the metal posts in 3D targets. Tips might get deformed a little, but I've never had one bend. Iron Will makes some different field points and those tips are practically impossible to destroy.

I'm 53 and have been bow hunting since I was 18. I've killed a lot of animals with a Long Bow, a compound, and a cross bow. My longest was 41 yards with the compound on a deer that a buddy hit and I got a follow up shot and drilled it. Oddly enough all the shots I've had with the cross bow have been the closest. All on drives and well under 10 yards, and absolutely miserable trying to find and make that happen with a cheap cross bow scope. Everything else was 10-20 yards. I really don't like taking over a 20 yard shot with any of these weapons. I don't trim shooting lines and at low light shooting times it's difficult to see branches and sticks and stuff. To the point of this video I have not had a problem getting 12 yard shots on Deer and Elk. With my 45# long bow 20 yards is my max and I plan on and set up for 10 yards. Out of a tree stand 6 yards is about my minimum. I can't really get bent over well enough for anything closer than that with the long bow. Ohh and all my cross bow kills were from the ground. I don't know what it is about that thing, but when I'm in the woods with it it's a killing machine. It's strictly for putting meat in the freezer. It's a Barnett 460. I enjoy the long bow more than anything. Take care.

@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 3 ай бұрын
50 pounds is my recommendation for a perfect weight. But you could also do 45. It will take a couple weeks for your muscles to develop as they are different from a compound. Also remember traditional bows unless specified on them otherwise have a draw weight measured at 28 inches of draw and go up or down about 3 pounds per inch either way. So you will need to know your draw length on a traditional bow. It really is best if you can get to a store that sells recurves so you can test a couple and get stuff figured out. Also many shoots happen around the country that are traditional bow events that you can test bows at.

yeah, the speed of an arrow has a lot more to do with the range than the power of the arrow. even if the arrow has all the power it needs, a fast trad bow at 200fps still gives plenty of time for that animal to move before the arrow gets there. at 30 yards, youre maxed out on that range and thats considered a long shot for time of arrow travel. most ppl dont think about that and only think about how much power the arrow has at 50 yards. "my bow slaps at 50 yards"....yeah but that animal is 6 feet futher to the left or right before the arrow gets there. not a good way to make accurate shots

@caseysmith544
@caseysmith544 Жыл бұрын
Just make sure the arrow is around the spine you need and the minimum weight an arrow should be for hunting and have arrows that are sharp and legal for your state and this will help you with taking down a deer. One person my brother knew used the wrong type of arrow, this one model of Muzzy 100 or 125 grain Trocar with a lower poundage 35 pound compound. The Muzzy Trocar model has a part that connects the arrow blades or ferule that sticks out causing the broadhead to stick and they might have even had the mistake of using the compound version of the model not the bow one so they might have had more with the back thread part, some of the connection part is not made for a thinner arrow but a thicker bolt.
