I was given one of these as a gift a few years ago. I have enjoyed it IMMENSELY. Right off the bat, I intended to carve my own stock, but the synthetic has grown on me. It's hard to beat hosing it off and letting it drip dry (lock and barrel get the usual attention, but they are EASY to remove and deal with separately.) It's SUPER light but doesn't feel insubstantial which is wonderful if you're carrying it for a while. Where it's non-traditional, I braided a simple grey/black paracord sling for it. With the challenges of getting caps and whatnot over the past few years, the flintlock has become a comforting part of the collection as everything I need can be sourced myself. I did hone the tumbler and sear VERY slightly (slightly "crunchy" out of the box) and ended up with a very nice, just under 4# trigger. On a good day from a sandbag and weighing charges (60 gr. FF .015 patch .490 ball cast & rolled myself), I can group inside 2" at 100 yds. Looking forward to your testing results.

I got one (percussion) for $150 last year. Tested sabot, pa conicals, round ball, bore driver, and power belts. My most accurate projectile was .495 round ball with .015 patch and an over powder felt wad. Next best was .490 round ball, then pa conical then the rest were about the same. Tried the hornady great plains, but it was all over the place. But I might have been using too much powder. 80 grains of pyrodex for all my tests.

I've had a Traditions Deer Hunter percussion model in .50 caliber since the early eighties. Mine has a wooden half stock, but a modern rubber padded butt and modern adjustable iron sights. It was my go-to white tail slayer for years while I was stationed in North Carolina. I would fill all six of my tags annually and never have to leave the base to do so (MCAS Cherry Point had 5,500 acres set aside on base for hunting).
@DavidHBurkartАй бұрын
This seems to be a great entry-level hunting muzzleloader. Appreciate that you bring these models to light rather than poo-pooing them. The price for a quality period-correct or replica-style flintlock is cost prohibitive to most folks interested in shooting/hunting with primitive arms. So much can be taught, learned and mentored with these hybrid smokepoles.

First outing at the range 3 shots in a one inch square on the target...I know it was luck but sure built confidence. That gun taught me the basics of muzzle loading and how important cleaning is. I still have the gun for a loner or fun shooting at the range. Oh I put some oily rags and lead in the stock to balance the gun out and my load is 70gr of clear shot shot the best for me.

All within a couple hundred $ of each other.

I had one of those for PA ML season, going back to 1996 when I got it and it was a real introductory rifle. Mine was very accurate and I had very few flash in the pans shooting it. I sold it because I couldn’t buy BP when I moved west, the internet didn’t exist like it does now so I couldn’t just order a 5 lb pack of Black to make it work. I have many muzzleloaders, but the Deer Hunter .50 Cal is outstanding. I wish they offered them also in both 36 cal and 54 cal with slow twists. Mine are also drilled and tapped for a scope. @markfair7648Ай бұрын
I love my pa pellet ultra light from tradition. The removable breech plug is awesome for cleaning. Plus it gives you the best choice of propellant to use. Being ,pyrodex, triple 7, black powder loose or pellets. As long as you use black powder in the pan and a priming charge of 4 f in the barrel first to ignite the main charge of 7 or pyrodex or even pellets. Lock throws lots of spark with #5 fint from track of the wolf. I weighted my butt stock by removing the rubber pad and filling the stock with newspapers and old lead shot or bullets. This will fix the balance till it balance on one finger in front of the trigger gard. Balance is a huge problem with plastic stock guns. Especially a muzzleloader. Those are my tips, Ethan . You can use some of them on the deer stocker. Tradition makes great guns. I just wish they made a shot barrels in 20 12 and 10. To incorporate like a Deer and turkey combo muzzleloader with 2 barrels. Merry Christmas, Ethan and family from Canada. Ps if the flint is in the jaws of the lock, it is considered loaded Here in Canada 🇨🇦 😂 All we will have here to hunt with will be flintlock and bows.

I love the removable touch hole as I had to remove it 5 times to put some powder in the barrel to blow that ball out. I have that exact model. It doesn't come with a flint and they tell you that in the ads usually. Since they sent you yours you didn't get the benefit of seeing that. It may be bare bones but they shoot great! It will reach out to 100 yards accurately, but like you I don't like to reach out more than 50-60 yards. It took me a while to figure out how to adjust the trigger but you can do it. Mine took a TON of pressure to fire when I first got it. Now it fires Like I want. The lock works pretty darned well. The Black Powder Maniac fired it a time or two and seemed to like it despite it not being a "traditional" flintlock. Being a little shorter than the "real" ones it does have a bit of a kick at heavier loads. Mine shoots best with 70 grains of 3F.

The biggest complaint I've ever heard about budget flintlocks is the heat treatment of the Frizzen. After as little as 20 to 50 shots, getting a consistent spark isn't going to happen. Changing flints will not help it's the heat treatment and consistent hardening of the frizzin. I've even heard this about pedersoli flintlocks, though I have not experienced this myself. I've had a pedersoli Early American Jaeger rifle 54-caliber flintlock. That's performed excellent. (I also have the percussion conversion for it) that doesn't see much use. My favorite rifle is my jim Kibler Colonial American Longrifle 54-caliber, which has more than exceeded all of my expectations.

I have hunted for many decades and one shot from a rifle such as this is really all that is needed. Of course one needs to be very familiar with their firearm and have tuned their skills to be effective with it. Ethan, you are right, fifty yards is all you really ever need. I have never engaged a deer beyond twenty five yards and have been successful with a muzzleloader every time I pulled the trigger. This type of success is no accident, it takes effort, but with a bare minimum of time anyone can enjoy hunting with a traditional rifle. Cheers.

All the other stuff to shoot it and clean it is on the buyer, just like any other guns. My Pedersoli Brown Bess cam with a flint--it also cost a wee bit more than that Traditions did. Good explanations on the barrel take down and twist rate.

The barrel is way too short for optimum use of the propellant. But it wouldn't keep me from purchasing one as the lock itself is almost half that much anywhere else.

Looks like a nice rifle😅

Yes they have their place but I have some traditions rifles and a custom rifle both in flintlock and I can say this if traditions would cut the stock differently it would make them more comfortable to shoot as they are the sights don’t come to the eye like they should length of pull is too short . They tend to be a cheek puncher ! The furniture is also too small . With that said they can be accurate and seem to hold up with a lot of shooting . Kit guns from tradition also suck but for the price point it will get you shooting! If you like it you will soon want a better one

Seems all TC Firestorms were plastic. Still not a fan . Mine is stainless , plastic ,and fiber optic.

Springs are made to be compressed. Always cracks me up when people act like leaving then in that state will destroy them. The springs on your car are constantly compressed. Watch springs are constantly wound. They didn't send a flint? They also didn't send lead, wadding, or powder. Some silly complaints in the first five minutes of this video simply had me laughing out loud.
@jacobwilbert1018Ай бұрын
Its not a complaint, just suprising, outside the norm. I get that people that dont have anything to compare it to arent grasping or misinterpreting the point. Not everyone is gonna know better, sorta thing that comes with experience. You come to expect to see things that would be considered "the norm"

I have a 12gauge Navy Arms Made in China gun I have loved since the 80's It shoots fake and real powder great I paid $50.00 for it brand new in 1980. It's twin Brother would be the discontinued Tradition's Tracker. No Muzzleloader is worth more than $150.00 Except T/C Hawkins and T/C New Englander,... in 1980 the sold for $250.00 If I can't shoot Black powder I buy at the store then I'll shoot nothing,..... since the 90's when ATF shut down and blackmailed Black Powder stores out of business. Fig Hazmat Fees,... shall not be infringed.

Back when Obama was president, I purchased a brand new Traditions flintlock Pennsylvania Rifle. It did NOT have a flint in it at the time of purchase. I had to purchase the flints separately.

Obama was president of Traditions? How relevant?
@jackmrozinski337Ай бұрын
traditions flintlocks do not come with flints.

They never ship them with a flint!

I cant picture it coming with flints. Their cap and ball arms dont come with caps.
@ILoveMuzzleloadingАй бұрын
Flints do last more than one shot though. I’ve never had a flintlock come without a flint, so it was surprising for me

Barrel should be longer, no thank you.

I know this has nothing to do with the video content however it has been bothering me for awhile. Your glasses don’t fit your face size or shape. Everything else is great.

@smokybob63Ай бұрын
@ I’m not qualified to make that kind of a recommendation.

@ also it’s just the opinion of some dude on the internet so take that with a grain of salt. I love your videos btw

I bought a traditions flintlock kit. The lock to me is useless. The quality is very poor in my opinion. I have a percussion woodsman that is just fine. But the flinter kit I put together, the lock really cant secure a flint.

Poor investment.

A great investment. I'll put my traditions up against anything, even if I lose.

@BuckskinsBlackPowder I will say the made in spain barrels shoot and are hard to be upset about. Its just the rest of it that is a hard sell for me. But i dont just hunt with them once a year n put them away, there are alot of problems to be found in every day use.
@MrOldclunkerАй бұрын
@@BuckskinsBlackPowder TC shoots circles round anything Traditions puts out. Been to enough ranges and seen the rsults to say that is the case.
