Trae Young. 2020 NBA All-Star. 2019 All-Rookie First Team. Young followed up what was a statistically impressive first season (19.1 points and 8.1 assists per game) by averaging 29.6 points per game (fourth best in the league, just points above reigning and back-to-back MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo) on 43.7% shooting from the field, 36.1% from 3 (averaging NINE AND A HALF THREE ATTEMPTS PER GAME) while shooting 86.0% from the line on 9.3 attempts per game. He also averaged 9.3 assists per game - which was good for second in the league behind LeBron James.
Trae made the second most free throws (481) in the league until the hiatus in play - second only to James Harden (692). He attempted 559 free throws this season, fourth best in the league.
Here were the league leaders in the FT attempts:
James Harden - 800
Giannis Antetokounmpo - 629
Luka Doncic - 562
Trae Young - 559
Jimmy Butler - 525
Anthony Davis - 525
There are two statistics I wanted to bring to your attention per Cleaning the Glass:
SFLD - what percentage of a player’s shot attempts was he fouled on.
FFLD - how many non-shooting fouls (fouls on the floor) did the player draw per team play.
Trae Young - SFLD% 14.2 FFLD% 4.5
Giannis Antetokounmpo - SFLD% 20.9 FFLD% 4.3
Luka Doncic - SFLD% 17.5 FFLD% 4.1
Chris Paul - SFLD% 4.3 FFLD% 3.9
Damian Lillard - SFLD% 11.3 FFLD% 3.7
James Harden - SFLD% 18.5 FFLD% 3.2
LeBron James - SFLD% 12.9 FFLD% 2.5
For what it’s worth - this tells me that Trae draws A LOT of fouls. If you look at those numbers, in terms of shooting fouls drawn, he falls in between the likes of James Harden and LeBron James, but he’s ranks as the BEST among these players at drawing non-shooting fouls. You’ll be able to see in the video a few of these examples, but for the most part, I did remove a lot of fouls on the floor. Getting your team in the bonus early puts a lot of pressure on the defense.
There are only a MINIMAL number of and1s. This doesn't account for 100% of what Trae does to draw fouls but it's a good example of what to watch for instead of JUST watching highlights.

Very helpful Evin. I'm always guarded by gyus and drawing fouls is my fav trick move to go to ftl and score,in 1 v 1,because of the gap in phisical skills😉 By the way,Trae Young's deep threes are amazing,can't wait to see them again.. In this season Young's teammate will be the Italian Danilo Gallinari,can you realize a video about him?By my side,his game is very underrated..He's very clutch on ftl and he's personally trained by an MMA teacher

- love the move where he locks the defender on his hips after the p&r, leans his chest forward before stopping and snaps back up for a jumper/floater. damn hard for a defender to not get into Trae's cylinder when he does that. amazing how adept Trae is at snaking the p&r this soon in his career - hate the move where he leans his shoulders sideways, waits to feel when his defender crosses his hips before snapping back up for a jumper/floater. damn hard to pull off because even though the defender technically goes into Trae's cylinder, it mostly looks like he's the one smacking his defender in real-time. - dude's small but strong. maybe not Earl Boykins-strong, but strong enough to handle contact like this over a whole NBA season.

@mrmacross
@mrmacross 2 жыл бұрын
@@JD-jz5gu Yeah, I think some of these are called okay. When Young launches himself sideways or backwards, that's when I really have an issue. Thank goodness the NBA changed the ruling on those specific plays. That said, while I think some of the calls are reasonable, I don't think it's fair that once a pick is successfully set, defenders can't aggressively pursue over the screen against this guy. No, you can't just truck Trae if you go over the screen, but if he's allowed to just slam the brakes and you make some contact, that's too much advantage for the offense. You're basically making it impossible for defenders to go over the screen. The problem is I can't give a proper solution for it if the ballhandler does a straight up-and-down jump shot when passing through the screen. If it's straight up and down, you can't call an offensive foul. And if you always rule "no call," then defenders will get wise and just plow into the ballhandler. I guess credit to Trae for actually strategizing around the way the game was officiated. Players had 75 years to abuse this rule but not a lot was said until recently.
@JD-jz5gu
@JD-jz5gu 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrmacross Yup. I think either way it gives either side too much of an advantage with or without a call, so I’d just give it to the offense tbh. Defenses can can come up with a couple strategies to try to slow it down, switching or going under the screen, so I will side with the offense there. And I think some players have done it over the years, but trae does it consistently. I just really see that as a high IQ play the defense has to learn to play against, but when he jumps any way into the defender it needs to be a no call or an offensive foul (although it’s hard to consistently say that when some players have that kind of jump forwards or backwards built into their jump shot).
@josephp2109
@josephp2109 3 жыл бұрын
There’s a very simple solution to this problem. REFS NEED TO WATCH THE DEFENDER. The NBA needs to instruct them of this. If you watch the offensive player you will see them flop or react and think there’s a foul. Watch the defender and if there’s nothing they could do, DONT CALL THE FOUL.

@@loicy.4004 Shooting not blocking foul. That's what it is and that's what it's often called. Only seen him get called twice on offensive fouls using this technique. It's makes the game less enjoyable to watch. In the bigger picture of things the NBA is more and offensive minded i.e., wants more high scoring. This comes at the price of limiting defense (no hand check, for example). Young is smart for taking advantage of what the NBA is giving him but this particular move ugly as heck.
