Everyone got up and started dancing the moment that song came out in clubs....the dance floor was packed solid.

I was 15 vears old when I first heard traffic. Listened to an underground radio station that used to play hip stuff like this, but this song........man, this song was ahead of its time and I fell in love with it instantly. I NEVER get tired of listening to this song. Have seen Steve Winwood twice in concert.........I AM VERY GRATEFUL to have gotten to see such an iconic musician who exceeded all expectations. Fantastic reaction guys, TY.

1971... 49 years ago. I was 23 years old. Steve Winwood is a musical prodigy. He was only 15 when he did "I'm A Man" with The Spencer Davis Group. You should check out "Night Train" off his album Arc Of A Diver where he not only wrote all the music, produced it, engineered it and recorded it in his home studio on his farm... but he also plays every instrument you hear. Amazing talent

Steve Winwood is a genius. He was a child prodigy in music. This Traffic song apparently is about the pressure from record companies asking him to conform and make pop music like what was currently be produced out of England at the time. Just brilliant.
@jkocol29 күн бұрын
Mott the Hoople was a glam rock band on the same label as Traffic and they were upset that Traffic had a better deal than them. This is Traffic's response, a song filled with artistic genius.

I grew up in the 70s too! I was 13 in1970. Music is my oxygen and has been since I was about 8!! So much incredibly talented people back then. Every band had it's own sound so I grew up getting in to lots of artists. Late 60s and 70s!! ✌ Oh and the guy singing, Steve Winwood, was in Blind Faith and had a solo career as well. This song and his voice....perfection. Mr Fantasy is another great Traffic song.

back in 1972 was when I first was turned on to this. We use to pour some cheap perfume into an ashtray, light it on fire and then light up a joint. So many stories about what the song means...most were about MLK and JFK. The song and the time had it's own mystic. I'm 66 now and the vib still gives me chills

High heeled boys is street slang for Heroin (boy) and Cocaine (girl) mixed to make a Highball. “Low spark” refers to the feeling after injecting the mixture. Every word relates to drug culture in one way or another. Btw, he was only 16 or 17 when he wrote the song.

Well Jim Capaldi wrote this song and he has said it is about the music industry. The gun making no noise is a drug reference.

Uncle Ted, I guarantee we'd have hung out and got high as hell listening to this and much more. I would've blown your mind on the Rock & Roll music I learned from my older siblings. They had everything covered from Allman Bros to Zappa. And they were playing it as teenagers while I was getting exposed to it at 6&7 years old because basically I had no choice! lol I knew the words from reading the albums by the time my friends my age were just discovering Rock.

All the guys in Traffic are/were so talented, but the one singing is Steve Winwood, who is simply amazing. A musical prodigy-- he plays keys and guitar, even played background keys on tracks for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Also, he had 80s pop hits- "Bring Me A Higher Love", IDK of you remember that one. He's had a 55 year career and can still very much deliver live.
thanx for sharing, the love of beautiful music is timeless and endearing.
