Why are they regular 3 color lights? Most light rail and BRT in the US have lights with a white line (vertical or horizontal) to prevent drivers from getting confused.

I think they made the choice to do green yellow and red because that's what the existing TTC streetcar system uses

It's not allowed in the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, and Ford and his fuddling fools refuse to allow changes to the Act to bring it up to internationally recognized norms which include horizontal as well as vertical white lines. Commenters, if they have an Ontario driver's licence, should know the law on this. [Transit priority signals Traffic and pedestrians must yield to public transit vehicles at a transit priority signal. The round signal is on top of a regular traffic signal and shows a white vertical bar on a dark background. This allows transit vehicles to go through, turn right or left, while all conflicting traffic faces a red light.]

@@Vortexone112 ION is commissioned under the Railway Act. Federal. You exactly make my point. ION, since it uses trackage regulated by Transport Canada, is able to use *Federally mandated signalling*. Attempts have been made under the Ford administration to adopt same for Toronto...a number of times, to dead silence.

In Belgium lights for the trams are all white with symbols: - = stop; • = like yellow; | like green, also / and \ equivalent to arrows. These apply to Bus lanes and change 3 to 5 seconds before the car lights do.

In Hong Kong's light rail system, we use a red T for stop and a white up arrow for go, which eliminates confusion for both drivers. I don't get why a light rail vehicle needs yellow signals, as the signal box should simply extend the green signal when a light rail vehicle is approaching an intersection, instead of telling it to slow down and make 200 passengers wait for 20 cars.
