She could have taken a decision to give up the child for adoption or to foster parents. This behavior is unacceptable and the punishment is lenient enough. For every crime committed, people behind it always have justifications:: Armed robbery-hunger, kidnapping--no job etc. As much as these sentiments are sometimes valid, justice must be prioritized, afterall Ruth definitely was not the only struggling single mother in the UK.

She should have gotten a longer sentence. She may have mental issues, but what she did after the baby dies, tells me she wanted that baby to die. She hid the facts. She was running away to Nigeria. She just looked depressed because she was caught. May that baby RIP. Fyi am single mother who went homeless, but one thing I never left behind is my little boy.

Being a single mother and/or new mother does not excuse using common sense, for a nurse of all people! It's not Africa where avoiding accountability is the order of the day. The fact that she had a nanny, that she even had mind to call and ask to take the blame, tells me all I needed to know.

3 years only? Wow, that was so lenient. I went back to work when my son was 3 weeks old. His father left us over wrong size diapers when my son was 2 weeks old leaving me with bills. After crying, I dusted myself off, found a babysitter and went back to where I had worked when I was in graduate school. She had a church, she had friends who could assist financially for the first month, rather than leave the baby alone to die gruesomely like that. May Joshua's soul rest in peace. By the way, where was Joshua's dad? He should be charged too for abandoning his child!

She needs life imprisonment. She brought life into this world and the care of that child is her utmost priority. Anything jeopardizing the safety and wellness of that child should be gravely shunned. Not even a job. She should have taken a menial job nearby, like serving in a coffee shop or where they would allow her to come along with her child. Poor baby Josh, rest in power, my cherub.

Thank you Br. Neze for breaking down the story as usual. The sentence she received was not enough for the crime, that baby died a horrible death. Being a single mother doesn't mean you are above the law. If she had no assistance abroad, she should have stayed in Nigeria. She could have chosen not to go to work,No job comes before a child and she had a sitter she could have arranged payment with. She belongs right where she is, in jail. She can get Mental health after her prison term, possibly during her time in Prison. It's sad,the baby doesn't get a 2nd chance. It's silly to think going to work and leaving a baby alone is taking care of a child,it's flat out Child abuse. If she were an African American in the US,the views would be much different 🤔

I genuinely feel for the innocent, vulnerable baby. It’s heartbreaking to think about the pain that child may have endured before passing away. I wouldn’t be surprised if this wasn’t the first time the nurse had left the baby unattended. As for the nurse, she may have been facing financial difficulties that influenced her decision. I believe the judge's frustration stemmed from her refusal to take responsibility and her attempt to flee to Nigeria. If she had acknowledged her mistakes and shown genuine remorse, it might have changed how the case was perceived. I will also keep our Ugandan sister in my thoughts. May her soul rest in peace, and I hope her two children receive the therapy they need to heal from this trauma. Thank you, Barrister Nezeville your excellent hosting skills.

The welfare of a child is paramount, and the judge would have considered mental and physical well-being before sentencing. The judge was quiet lenient considering the child died, and no need to punish Ruth twice. And there are prisons for people with mental issues. There is social welfare, she should have claimed social benefit until the baby is ready for free nursery place, then she can go to work. So many professionals claim social, stay home to look after their children.

I’m that 2nd set of people. Everything these days is mental health. Some evil acts are just that, evil. Stop hiding behind mental health. Haba now, that child is so tiny and helpless. The situation abroad is not easy at all but at the same time, not at expense of a poor, defenseless child that didn’t ask to be born. We get away with a lot of crimes in Naija o. See those presenters playing emotional cards- Abeg park emotions go one side. She should be thankful that the sentence isn’t more than that. If it was US, them go don add 3rd degree mur.d3 r or manslaughter to the child endangerment Abi na negligence or whatever they Sha charged her with and she might gone away for longer. Abeg, let’s be mindful. We shouldn’t chase wealth and forfeit family, Abeg. I know it’s not easy but lives lost can’t be regained.

So she had money to buy a ticket on the spot and run to Nigeria when she got caught but she could not pay a childminder???? She could not buy that ticket earlier and take the baby to Nigeria for a family member to care for? She had a childminder she had a relationship with. Why not beg her for reduced fee or pay later arrangement? Could she not access social services? Food banks? Church assistance etc? We could say postpartum depression so maybe she was not in her right mind but she carried out her nursing duties without issues or complaints. Clearly the judge was lenient because 3 years for this crime is very very small. Then again the United Kingdom does not give harsh sentences. I won't be surprised if she is released next year.

This is the reason why a baby needs both parents. The father provides and PROTECTS. Most ladies are fast to push out the fathers out because of the quest to live the trending single mother life thinking that they will get support from the UK government. First, she could have bargained for a better deal from the care giver. Second, she could have applied for a six month visa for someone from Nigeria to come take care of her baby. She clearly had no empathy, was very careless, was not calculative and will be deported immediately she completes her sentence because nobody will ever employ an exconvict.

Oh my God, what a tragedy. Life for a nurse is hard….. was she cruel ….. no, desperate the fact that she felt that desperate. Unfortunately, i worked as a nurse in this country, and see how this poor international nurses , I know she was not entitled to mat leave , she would / should have needed to have been in the Job for at least 6 months before getting pregnant, but the bills keep pilling up. Mental health wise I think she was fine but she was heart broken, she possibly could not even afford to feed herself, and as a foreigner absolutely no recourse to public funds. I don’t condone her behavior/decision but this is a very tragic case of two victims. Ruth was a victim of circumstances too. And we all failed these two ……. There are lessons we all need to learn from this tragedy……. Let’s support the new comers to the UK to prevent such cases please

Foreign countries are not as easy as Nigeria where single mothers can find it easy to get help or where you can skip bills, no one knows what she is going through

Honestly, three years is too small for the crime she committed. She is heartless. Why did she get pregnant? Nonsense

Something similar happened here in Ireland. But she left three kids at home. The oldest one was nine.

This is very crazy. In the U.S., a lot of women/ girls are doing the same thing. Some of them will leave the kids home & go party or go somewhere else like work or other places. Now she lost everything's.

UĶ is very good at giving women support because of a baby; irrespective of immigration status. Health visitors go and visit new mums within 1 to 2 weeks of discharge, and continue unless mum says she is OK. Health visitors can supply toys , food, milk, fruit and vegetable vouchers if mum says she is lacking. They can give supporting letter to help get state housing from government. The worst thing that would have happened is the social services will collect the child to be fostered while she has right to visit her child. When she demonstrates she can cope, she will get reassessed and get her child. What tends to happen is when babies are being fostered, people go on and get pregnant again so the goverment put a plan to collect the next baby as soon as the woman gives birth in hospital in UK or Europe, no escaping. So people are scare to report they cannot cope thinkig government is out to take their baby. Sad story people should learn from. There is a lot of free food in churches and library. No free cash

This is a case of mental health. No one in their right state of mind would do that. As sad as it is, she still dressed up and go to work, she found her way back home and could still send messages to the minder not mincing words. Hmmm MENTAL HEALTH IS REAL my people. Cry for help when needed please.

She didn't make the baby by herself even if the father didn't want to take responsibility, there are maternal and paternal parents/grandparents. They may not have been in the UK but help or assistance was available cause leaving a 10 week baby is not feasible. In conclusion, the mother must have been experiencing mental or postpartum issues (we'll never know). Sad case indeed and quite frankly it's not easy to judge what you've never experienced cause people generally go through a lot and you never know what one is going through until you walk in their shoes. Having said that, it doesn't justify leaving an infant for 8 hours. People are generally going through the most.
