Tragedy struck this small Mexican town... and my family

Welcome to El Rancho Texas, San Luis Potosi my father's hometown. Today I have the honor of exploring my roots in San Luis Potosi and learn more about my dad's life in Mexico before he migrated the United States. We will be showing you around town, hear some of my early childhood stories and learn about the devastating effects of the global pandemic Covid-19. But we will also be celebrating life as we celebrate my cousin quinceañera.

I don’t even know where to begin… I could not stop watching this video. It resonated with me. I am so proud of you for putting family first. I don’t speak Spanish, yet, but I felt like I understood everything that your father was saying. The sense of community, the small town, the partying, the love… I’m Black but I felt like my ass wanted to be Mexican now. Lol . Since I came over here at a young age I didn’t get an opportunity to hear my Buelo Tato story of how they grew up and having mi Tio Lino speak about it and show the house they grew up, just makes me so happy to see it. unfortunately that's very true, many Mexican Americans can be very ignorant about Mexico and they're just as influenced by media and sometimes even the horror stories from their immigrant families who've had to flee awful living conditions and while it's not perfect, Mexico is growing and changing and has a lot of beauty. My heart is bursting with joy and also crying with sadness. This is the relationship I wish I had with my dad. My dad was born in the states of Mexican parents and he struggled to be an American kid and this struggle was passed to us, his kids. We now, all wish we could speak better Spanish and wish we knew more of or Mexican heritage.

Thank you for sharing Scot. We understand some of those struggles you mentioned, so many of us were raised under different circumstances that didn't allow us to express our Mexicaness as we should. We hope you know that it is never too late to connect with those roots. It's even easier these as getting to Mexico is more accessible, and learning spanish can be done at the tip of your finger tips. We hope you find the courage to come back and pursue some of those roots the same way we did.

❤ Great video! Reminds me so much of my first trip to Mexico way back in 1978. I spent the summer with my best friends family who were in the cattle business. I had the opportunity to explore many villages and small cities. I found a love with the country and it’s people that continues to this day. I am currently looking for a piece of Mexican heaven to retire and call home when the time comes to hang up my work clothes. I am glad that you are exploring your family roots! I have a huge extended Mexican family that have let me into their lives and the many friends that have. I feel blessed to have been let into a culture that is so different from my own.

Tu papa una persona muy resiliente, que bonito vivir con ustedes la historia de sus raíces gracias por compartirla, siendo de pueblo me relaciono mucho con la historia de tu papa, tambien deje mi pueblo a los 17 para emigrar a los EEUU. Afortunadamente estoy por jubilarme y regresar a mi Jalisco. Que tragedia, si no me equivoco, el rancho de tu papa perdio al 7 % de su poblacion en la pandemia (22 out of 300 is 7.3 % aproximadamente). En mi pueblo tambien murio mucha, gente incluyendo a mi doctor familiar con el que me consultaba cada que regresaba de vacaciones al pueblo desde que era yo adolescente. Saludos
