During the shooting of "Onley the Lonely", John Candy, being the star of the film, was given a bigger dressing room trailer than Maureen O'Hara. Upon discovering this, John made a big fuss, demanding that he switch trailers with Maureen O'Hara, insisting that she deserved the bigger of the two being that she was the bigger star. A really charming story that I never forgot. It shows you that Candy's comedy was only surpassed by his class.

I agree with you. So sad that we lost him so early, but in reading about him I find that he did not live a happy life. His father passed at 35 from a heart condition that weighed heavily on his mind. And, no pun intended, he battled weight issues as well as with alcohol and cocaine. And suffered from depression. It's totally at odds with his screen image.

I'm Canadian and was an Argo fan. I remember when John Candy acquired part ownership of the team. He put his acting career on hold for two years to promote the CFL. I remember when I watched "Only the Lonely" for the first time a few years ago, I totally believed that John Candy was Maureen O'Hara's son. What a brilliant series of performances, including that of the great Anthony Quinn. On a side note, I am 30 years old (yes, born after this Tonight Show episode was recorded), and I have had a major crush on Maureen O'Hara since I first saw her in "The Quiet Man" when I was about 12. That scene in the cemetery just blew me away. A few years later, I wrote her a letter, and she very kindly sent me back an autographed index card, inscribed to me. I treasure it amongst my prized possessions. She was a brilliant, wonderful lady and a tremendous actress.

Without a doubt, Maureen O’Hara was the most beautiful woman in the world when she appeared in “How Green Was My Valley.” The trick with the veil that was devised by John Ford in the scene as she was leaving the church after her character’s wedding was a masterpiece.

I was on the Turner Classic Movies cruise in 2013 and HGWMV was introduced by the late, great Jeopardy ! gameshow host, Alex Trebek. I had never seen the movie before. Alex said it was among his top 3-4 movie favorites; and it certainly became one of mine after seeing the stunning Maureen O'Hara in it !

@@ericthered760 John Ford tried to recreate the magic with “The Quiet Man”, but he couldn’t get the financing before WW2 when he went off filming documentaries for the US government. He finally got Republic to finance the project in 1951, and you can see a lot of the supporting actors from “How Green Was My Valley” along with Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne in the movie. Two of her brothers were also in the movie in the roles of the young priest and one of the young IRA members. There’s a great DVD of “The Quiet Man” with Ms. O’Hara providing constant background commentary. A highlight is during an interview that is included on the DVD, when the interviewer asks Ms. O’Hara “wasn’t it a lot of fun to film the movie?” and she replied “It wasn’t for me because they were all drunk all the time.”

it's very possible she may even be a distant relative of mine, O'Hara is a common name amongst my people, we both grew up Catholic and our origins are from Ireland, I wish I had a way to verify it for a fact but all I know is she checks all the boxes from what I can tell. amazing if she was indeed one of my people lol

@@jimmyc1518 It's very easy to tell who your distant relatives are if you're Irish. It's a very small country and all our surnames can be traced back to specific counties. For example, my last name is Farrell. The name originated in County Longford. I share a distant relation with actor Colin Farrell. My sister visited County Longford and the name is everywhere, from Farrell's hardware store, Farrell's Pub, Farrell's construction company, you name it. It's not only the most common name in the county, but my own grandfather told us himself where he's from. Funnily enough, even though O'Hara isn't actually Maureen's real surname, look up famous actress Catherine O'Hara. Catherine and John Candy were fellow actors and friends in the famous Canadian comedy group called SCTV in the early eighties. Catherine and John go way back together. So, do a little research on the internet. You can easily find the exact place where your ancestors are from. And the more you find out, the more you'll feel you owe it not only to yourself, but to them as well. It's important. Cheers.

Too late, Michael. Sorry to break it to you like this, but I have it on good authority your wife has contacted a divorce lawyer. And to make matters worse, she hasn't hired just any divorce lawyer, but famed, high powered, celebrity divorce lawyer Gloria Allred. And even worse than that, Gloria is now in touch with the networks and it looks like your divorce will be broadcast on national television. Again, Im very sorry.

There will definitely never be another John Candy. Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles are three of the greatest comedies of all time, plus all of the other smaller parts he had in other movies like home alone. He was the funniest person in every movie he was in. Even if it was for only five minutes.

Maureen was right, Mr. Candy was a marvelous dramatic actor, as well as a great comedian! Talent, John had huge talent, with a heart just as big! What a great man, I miss him constantly, a true gentleman with an exorbitant talent! A very humble, down to earth, ordinary type person who, I would have truly loved to have had as my neighbor! This movie touched my heart, and made me realize that John Candy was not just a great comedic actor, but a truly great actor with so much potential as a great dramatic actor as well! To me, this movie ranks even higher than the movie, "Planes, Trains and automobiles!" If you like John Candy, and you have not yet seen this movie, you are missing out on one of the greatest performances in John Candy's life! A truly wonderful, heartfelt movie that nowadays seems so rare to find, such an exceptionally written and wonderfully acted out, touching movie! John and Maureen in this movie were, truly magical!!
