Just look at the statistics. Jimmy Wilde was the greatest British boxer of all time by a country mile. Also in my opinion in the top 10 of the finest boxers the world has ever seen. Look at the size of some of the fighters he walloped! Thanks for putting this on You Tube.

Thanks for putting on you tube. I’m 60 now, and my Dad, who died in 2022, used to tell me, when I was a young boy; about a small boxer who hit so hard and was so hard to hit they called him ‘The Ghost with a Hammer In His Hand’ and just from such a sobriquet, even then: I thought he must be one of the best. All this time on I’ve learned a little more about him.

I read somewhere he knocked out 26 men in one day on the booths, everyone of them much bigger than him, he was an absolute phenomenon. Todays fighters cant hold a candle to greats such as him, kid Lewis, Jim Driscoll , kid Berg etc, etc, 2 fights a year then meant you starved to death as simple as that. Just think of all the great fighters that were lost in the 2 world wars different world then harder than we will ever know.

I remember this happening and my dad being both annoyed and upset. Dad always said Jimmy seldom weighed over 7 stone which would have made him a paperweight and his achievements all the more remarkable. I have a Jimmy Wilde book on boxing that my dad gave me, written in 1923. For some reason, one of my trainers when I was an amateur boxer, was mad on Welsh boxers and we all boxed in red SEER trunks

Poor Benny Lynch turned to alcohol and ended in the gutter penniless. My Dad , Eddie Robb, was an England ABA official. A good man who was one of the people who started the Multi Nations shows in The George’s Hall in Liverpool. Sadly passed away 2020 .

I read a biography on Benny Lynch by John Burrowes that is one of the best boxing books I've ever read, and I've read a lot. Wee Benny struggled to down to 8st which is something little Jimmy didn't. I'd back Benny to win simply because he'd probably be a stone heavier. Benny had beautiful footwork and a scything left hook but the Welsh lad probably hit harder

So sad Joe, my uncle ABA champion, London schoolboy champ, was mugged in his 70's by 2 scumbags, one held him while the other rifled his pockets, the only thing that bothered him was the fact that in his prime they wouldn't have got him sweating before he knocked the pair of them spark out. Little justice in this world.

My two uncles were boxes post war . I can always remember a little book in Nan and grandad‘s house just playing green with the words Jimmy wild. Both uncles were exceptional boxes one of them used to have Freddie Mills and Eric Boone come to the town so they could train with him before fights the other one probably the best one he never turned professional. He had a leaky valve in his heart and was found to be coughing up blood. That’s sad like Jimmy he had a heavy bout of flu in getting to the final of the ABA, which unfortunately he lost when in the corner they knew he wouldn’t have the stamina so I went out to finish it in two rounds done well in those two rounds but lost out in the third and lost the bout . My uncle didn’t know it but grandad was there in the crowd watching his son fight. The rest of the family huddled round Mrs. Itches😮 wireless listening to the fight. They didn’t even have a wireless. At a funeral earlier this year one of uncle Fred sparing partner obviously has died but his sons were saying to me Dad always used to say nobody dare mess with Freddie Gay. Sorry that was a bit self-indulgent but picture that small book with the name Jimmy Wilde sparked off these memories.
