“CNN’s Erin Burnett Out Front on Tuesday profiled a former Donald Trump supporter who attended 45 rallies during the campaign, but no longer supports the president or his agenda.
Kraig Moss shadowed Trump’s campaign rallies during the 2016 election to tell the story of his son, Rob Moss, who died on Jan. 16, 2014 from a heroin/fentanyl overdose at age 24. The grieving father was a staunch Trump supporter, and was encouraged to support then-candidate Trump by his promise to help addicts struggling with addiction. Trump even reached out to Moss personally at a rally, calling him “a great father,” and assuring him, “your son is proud of you.”
“I’m not on the Trump trail anymore, and I’ve lost my heart,” Moss told CNN’s Elizabeth Cohen in an interview, pointing to the president’s support of the American Health Care Act, which would drop an addiction treatment and mental health mandate that covers 1.3 million Americans. Moss told Cohen he believes Rob would still be alive if he had health insurance.
“I believed everything he said,” Moss said. “Now I don’t believe he was true in his word when he was speaking. I think he was looking for votes, to be honest with you.”
“It’s not at all what Mr. Trump promised everybody he was going to provide for us,” he added. “I feel that now-anger, I feel hurt inside.””*

All that mistakes Ana said... South Koreans already went through them to elect Park Gun Hyae in 2012, exactly THE same reason that Americans elected Trump. Her promise was literally "Make South Korea Great Again" with economic democratization, reminding economic bloom in her father's (although it was JFK but many Korean people believed because of Park Jung Hee, anyway) era. Result? Chain disasters (Sweol ferry, MERS..., ballpen nuclear power plant failure), stagflation, ever high youth unemployment/suicide rate, false accusation incident (유우성), cutting off worker rights... list goes on... and on... So, they've stood up. Studied, learned, even though 99% of their media was nothing better than FOX. They've found independent media(i.e. 망치부인), and a few reasonable media outlet (JTBC, 손석희) that weren't completely corrupt. In Apr. 2016, they sent more opposition party members to legislation branch. Yet, they didn't falter... kept protesting with candles... --> Impeachment at the end. Americans, you have 2018. Don't waste it.

I think the issue is that many of the people who were exploited by him, were also the same people spreading his hateful rhetoric and mocking the exploitation of others in our society who have been historically oppressed. I think it just goes to show that empathy is _always_ a reasonable tool to use, even on terrible people. It's a tool that can help us better understand the world and the problems of our age, even if we don't agree with the people who we're practicing empathy on. In general, these people _did_ demonstrate a significant lack of empathy during Trumps meteoric rise to popularity among the conservative base, and criticizing that on behalf of the people who were hurt by it is totally legitimate. In some ways, I don't feel sorry for a lot of them - many of them had the information and weren't raised in that kind of environment, but gave in to their prejudices/tribalist predispositions anyway, but because I can empathize with why they made that decision, I can better understand the political climate as a whole, even if I think their choice of vote was completely misguided (and in many cases, based largely on hatred rather than pure misinformation). So I guess, to invoke one of my favorite John Green quotes, "Stupid truth, always resisting simplicity". Trump voters aren't just a block of people - there's nuance there. Some of them deserve sympathy, some of them don't. This guy's a member of the former.

Save the smugness for later because right now we need people like this, we can't have it both ways. Its not easy for people to admit they were wrong. This poor guy was vulnerable and he was lied to. The reason I criticize a lot of the electorate (and this year especially Trump people) is that they are so cavalier about this awesome responsibility we all have. What is our electorate? The cynics who simply don't get involved at all - shame on them. The lazy who only show up every four years for the general election. The lazy who do not bother to learn about anything. I would almost like to see one kind of poll test. If you cannot name a single policy of your candidate, and articulate how you think it will affect a change that you want, you don't get to vote. The fanatics who control the primaries because the lazy don't vote in primaries. These are often one issue voters - abortion, taxes, immigration. Anyone willing to engage their brain for two seconds would have known that Trump did not care about healthcare, because he could not articulate ANY ideas about how to fix it. I have MS. It's one of the big dogs on the short list of diseases the media loves to talk about in debates on health care, medical marijuana, accessibility, etc. They love to talk about how debilitating and painful it is, how there's no cure, and how it can bankrupt you fast. But one of the things that doesn't get mentioned is that this is a disease that likes to strike you in your twenties, AKA that age group the GOP thinks doesn't really need health care. I was a 21-year-old college student when I stepped out of a shower, walked towards my bedroom, fell, and was paralyzed for the longest 20 minutes of my life up to that point. How many 21-year-old college students have great health insurance, disability insurance, and enough in savings to help you through the diagnosis period, which can take years? And forget social security; to get SSD you need a sizable work history, and again, who at 21 has that? To get SSI, you need a concrete diagnosis...and again, that can take YEARS. So in the meantime, I was screwed. Screwed, and now uninsurable because I had the label of "possible MS," and then "probable MS." Neither qualifies you for social services, by the way. You're on your own. That was my reality for years. It's the reality the GOP thinks is a great idea...which is easy for them to say, with their great government health plan and no need to fear that a disease will put their family in the poorhouse, forcing them to choose between taking all the medications you need to fight this disease or put food on the table. Trying to figure out how to buy a used wheelchair that you can't afford and even if you had insurance, it won't cover it. Living in pain because the money for the things to fight it--like medications, physical therapy, etc.--just isn't there. I don't want anyone to have to go through that. And I don't understand anyone who does.

I am 62 I have a woman "friend" that is 71. She voted for Trump. I was for Bernie, then Hillary. I think it says a lot about our friendship that we are still friends. She is the only person that I have in my circle that voted for Trump that I still speak to. My story relates to how Cenk is explaining how many older people get their news. My friend did not understand at all why the Freedom Caucus was against Trumpcare. She thought that the Freedom Caucus was against Trumpcare because it left so many uninsured. Make sure your true friends understand why you dislike Trump's ideas and how there are people with more extreme ideas than Trump.

I am a former heroin addict with nearly 2 years clean. I have many friends who have died from their drug use, and many friends who are now clean thanks to the ACA, myself included. I went to rehab, and my health care covers my replacement therapy medication. I am currently working as a pharmacy tech, often offering the same medication I use to others in need. My medication is over $500 monthly cash price. I will not be able to receive this treatment with the coming changes. I've already made drastic life changes, but I fear for the people who may never receive treatment once the Republican administration has finalized their attack on healthcare.
