Huge old cemetery here with a tragic past. After the church was burned down the land went back to the original owner. (The church didn’t own the land.) They were not allowed to build back there and the church was rebuilt up the street. Then the land with the cemetery was later sold to the rock quarry and access to the cemetery appears to be denied to this day. Glad to see this happening again. More graves need uncovered. You should leave the uncovering to the younger Robert. I also noticed that the younger Robert is more careful in revealing the names. I'm sure that brush erodes more of what is inscribed on those stones.

I'm wondering if any of the families (if there are any still living or around the area) are allowed to go in instead of "just anyone" being allowed access? It would be and awful shame if they didn't allow the families in to visit their own loved ones!! It could explain as to why these graves are in the shape that they're in (no one allowed in, graves can't legally be cleaned off properly). Just wondering about the reason(s) as to why no one has been there.

@@lornahardin4563 while watching this I felt the same way. We have a cemetery here in our town up here in Kentucky. A few years back something was done about it. I pass it the other day and it still being maintain but something is still missing like lack of personal care or something. I'm sure I have relatives over there in it. It's a African American cemetery too. It had grown over after years and years of neglect. It's clean off now. The city and volunteer labors got it straighten out. There was a lady I knew from the library that was listing some of the graves. I think it interesting to see and do this kind of work. Some of the funeral director here help on it as well.

Regarding lost African American Graveyards and Cemeteries; one of the problems is that succeeding generations moved up north during the Great Migration of the 1950's looking for sustainable work; thereby abandoning these ancestral lands. In my family it's the same. I was born in NYC but both parents were born in rural North Carolina. I know where my Grand parents are buried on both sides of the family but not my Great Grand parents. My parents used to say they're buried "back in the woods"; of course I confess I don't have the courage that you two have to go into the woods "looking for lost Cemeteries". I've been looking for people in the area I used to live in. I'm doing it from a distance now. But I have documented black cemeteries. Right now I'm helping to identify who is buried in a black/mulatto cemetery that only has field stones as head stones. Been fortunate to dig through old documents to find people buried there. I did notice the movement of black people to bigger cities like Brooklyn, NY, DC, Philadelphia, and Detroit. NY is horrid to try to get death certificates so you can find them. This is a great thing that the Roberts are doing.

Do you have someone in the area that can map this cemetery with lidar? The college here did that with a couple of old cemeteries here for educational and historical purposes. Not as big as this cemetery of course.

Under Georgia laws no descendent of those buried in a cemetery cannot be denied access to a graveyard. Owner of the land has to be notified upon visit. The cemetery also cannot be disturbed by land owners

Then Georgians need to Lobby their Governor to open and preserve these sacred places. They're decaying further with every passing day.

I have been through a huge ordeal with a family plot in GA. I am a GA resident as well, however I do knock, and ask if plans have been made, and if they are ok with me at the cemetery. I do believe one should be considerate as much as possible. If no one is home, I visit, look around the cemetery and leave a note on the door of me stopping by. The people are very nice who live there. I do know there is a "slave cemetery" on the other side within the cemetery lot. I have found all or most of the stones before. Going to look into seeing if there is a way for help to preserve the area. If you know of anything, any advice etc., would be appreciated. Thank you.

In GA you cannot deny access to a cemetery. I have had a huge ordeal with my own family cemetery here in GA. People think they can block you, but they end up in trouble.

Case law in Georgia has been interpreted to mean that the heirs of those buried in a cemetery have an implied easement on the property. The easement gives the heirs the right to prevent disturbance to the graves and the right of ingress and egress for taking care of the burial plots.

Seeing so many children's graves hurts my heart for their families. Knowing that both the mother and the baby were at risk during and after the birth, not just for days or weeks, but for months. Many children didn't survive more than ten years. Adults had such a short lifespan as well. I am very glad that when I was born there were ambulances, paramedics, nurses and a doctor in my home town. I was born in a manager's cottage of a farm. It was on a dirt road at least a half hour journey by car from the hospital. If I was born in the time of horse and carriage it would have taken at least half a day. The first ambulance got lost in fog ( a pea souper) and the second ambulance had to be guided by our neighbour. I was born almost a month premature with the umbilical cord wrapped around my throat. Mum delivered me herself and said I was blue and she was worried about my breathing.

What company owns this cemetery? Social media is powerful these days and we could at least try to pressure them to allow access. As a historic African American cemetery it needs to be preserved. It's great that someone did the huge great effort to document it on Find a Grave.

No. Don’t harass anyone. Is that what you would want for somebody to make a point to you? The historical society can be made aware of it and they would legally work on getting access in an amenable way. Public humiliation never works. That’s just being a bully. Don’t you know people kill themselves over what you suggest?

It's hard for me to accept that there are cemeteries it the woods neglected & rotting away. I ask myself (and everyone else should too) why as Americans do we allow this to happen? These are our founders & ancestors. We should appreciate them more than this.

Same and I am shocked as to how fast nature takes over when these cemeteries are neglected. I forget the video but he had one a while back with a long forgotten cemetery in the woods like this. Completely overgrown and it looked like no one had been here in 100 years and he uncovered a grave from the late 1990s. My jaw hit the floor.

I find abandoned gravesites on homesteads from the 1800s. Mostly due to cholera. And mostly children.

This is a very sad story. I think that all grave yards and cemeteries should be preserved, mapped, and all found Graves marked. I am ashamed at how these bairial grounds have been disrespected over the years. I so appreciate your time and respect in showing these to us.

I wish more people would ask these question of the elders of there family. So much history is lost because people won't asks these question. I looked 27 years for my Great Grandmothers grave. Last year we found it (well my sister spotted it). I cried because I was so happy to have been able to see it. It's a wonderful thing you both do, and it makes me smile to think someone might be able to see where there greats or Great Greats might be laying to rest because of you two. You make a great team. Its great to see The Other Robert!! A very sad, but amazing place. Huge place. How unaware most people are today. What total disregard of the corporation to not allow access. I was surprised to see so many markers and not creek rock. I wonder if any of the current generation of descendants even knows this graveyard exists? People forget too easily, especially without access. Enjoyed hearing what Sonny had to say. Coupled with Mr. Ben on Rough Edge, I think it would be a great to do a series of interviews with the residents of Waverly Hall and surrounding area. Just conversational, especially the elderly people - history and their lifes story. This was epic at over an hour long. How sad that a Quarry has denied access to a grave yard. They should be helping to preserve it instead of putting up obstacles . I always thought it would be nice if someone handy with tools would put together some crosses to mark these unmarked graves . Maybe use pallets to make simple white crosses .Great boy scout project. In Texas, you are allowed to visit cemeteries that are on private lane on weekend in April and October. The land owners have to allow it.

Thank you both for this adventure ! I can't believe that many graves could be forgotten. That's a lot of people. But I see that it's true. Wish I could get out and search for graves here in KY.

You guys are awesome, I found the graves of my grandmother’s 3 babies that died and I thought that was hard in a functioning but old cemetery with records. You guys really found the forgotten. So sad. Heritage history matters!

Haven’t watched the entire video yet, but had to say great Job Boys👍. That first WW-2 granite Grave marker was pretty fancy. That soldier was involved in the War effort probably state side as He was born 1905’ and that’s old to be unlisted in WW-2. Unbelievable that there wasn’t some type of access marked walk/trail leading to this special place after the Church was burned down! Appears the church burned in the 1950s when there was ongoing strife. Somebody gobbled up the land during that time. There likely wasn’t any -willing Legal Represenatives during that time to step up and protect or represent the deceased and family’s relatives so 65 years later the Earth is reclaiming it!
