SYNOPSIS: The video is about the teenage daughter who is growing up house where the mom and dad are punk and expect their daughter to also pick up the punk style life. Unbeknownst to the mom and dad, the daughter has grown a love for traditional norteño and conjunto music. The daughter’s secret is accidentally revealed on her birthday and a conflict ensues between the daughter and the parents. Not knowing what to do, the father turns to alcohol to help cope with the situation. Serendipitously, while drinking at a bar, he runs into a poster announcing the performance of Piñata Protest, a band that ties together the punk and the norteño/conjunto music. Excited to have found a way to connect with their daughter, the parents surprise the daughter by taking her to the Piñata Protest show. At the show the the daughter is elated and the parents are excited and relieved. The family bonds at the show by dancing and crowd surfing.
This video stems from the idea of how young Latinos in the United States are expected and often do assimilate into American culture, forgetting the music that their parents or grandparents loved. In our music video, we turn that idea on its head. What if that youth resisted assimilation and picked up traditional Mexican music? We took this idea to the extreme.
