Saw this when I was a teen and never forgot the film. Criminally underappreciated movie. Parents should watch this with their kids. Very entertaining and full of young wonder.

A classic of it's kind containing this brilliant, and still relevant quote. "The whole world is a circus if you know how to look at it. The way the sun goes down when you're tired, comes up when you want to be on the move. That's real magic. The way a leaf grows. The song of the birds. The way the desert looks at night, with the moon embracing it. Oh, my boy, that's... that's circus enough for anyone. Every time you watch a rainbow and feel wonder in your heart. Every time you pick up a handful of dust, and see not the dust, but a mystery, a marvel, there in your hand. Every time you stop and think, "I'm alive, and being alive is fantastic!" Every time such a thing happens, you're part of the Circus of Dr. Lao."

One of my favourite childhood movies. A brilliant performance by Tony Randall. Dark and scary in some places but enchanting and whimsical in others.

A truly fine film, not only because of Tony Randall's wonderful performance(s), but because it had a great script from Charles "Twilight Zone" Beaumont (who died much too young) adapted from the award-winning novel by Charles G. Finney. Never forget: all good movies start with a quality screenplay. All of them.

Before Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers, Tony Randall played multiple roles in this film. This film was definitely ahead of its time. I first saw it back in the early 1990s and I've been a fan of it ever since

This trailer, while showcasing some of the neat effects, doesn't nearly describe what the film is actually like or what it means. It's more than special effects. This film is an anomaly in many ways, to the point where the closest film I can compare it to is _Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory_. It's like a slightly darker, more cynical Disney film that uses it's strangeness and surreal attitude to its advantage via having an overarching heart and whimsical tone to all of it. This movie is all about showing us that "magic" is not just something you see in Lao's circus, life itself can be considered magic, or at least what we humans see as magic. We go from a town obsessed with making money, under control of a corporate shill and hack, with our main adult male being some sort of stalker, and the woman being an uptight overly restrictive parent, along with hicks, dysfunctional couples, and lazy drunks to a town filled with people willing to love each other and come together to help everybody out, and the town they love so much. All thanks to this mysterious stranger that comes into town and show everybody what true integrity means, accompanied by all the wonders he wants to show everybody. The speech he has with Mike about the whole world being a circus is breathtaking, along with the creativity and weird spectacle the circus has to accompany the themes of the worst and most unusual in life aspiring people to be the best they can be. Not to mention Randall nailed every part. Along with _Glory_ and _The Iron Giant_, this seems to be a critically acclaimed classic that not too many know about sadly, which is a huge shame because it does deserve more recognition.

I agree. This movie does deserve more recognition. I loved it as a kid. Better than a disney movie because it is darker and more cynical -- in other words; it doesn't insult a person's intelligence. I think the movie was ahead of its time in some ways.

7 Faces of Dr Lau is like a corny kid's movie and a strange adult morality play mashed into one film. Most people who have seen it don't really understand it. Those that do are mesmerized by it.

Great movie. Such a performance by Tony, too. I wonder why they allowed so many mispronunciations of his name, though. He says Lo, they all say Lauw. Looks like Lau to me, but he wasn't really Chinese, so it's a minor point, but I noticed it each time as I'm accustomed to do. Continuity in films are tough to keep sometimes.

Despite the outdated racial caricaturing and equally problematic yellow-face surrounding the titular character who is ultimately a positive protagonist at his core (especially compared to whatever the Hell Micky Rooney was doing in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S around the same time) and the less noted criticism that the movie is a heavily toned down adaptation of the original, far more darker, nastier, Apocalyptic book, THE 7 FACES OF RD. LAO is still a really good fantasy movie that I'd recommend to those who haven't seen it. It's like MARRY POPPINS meets THE TWILIGHT ZONE... I think?
@herman4525 жыл бұрын
Toned down from the book, but the fortune that Apollonius (?) told the fatuous older woman came almost verbatim from the book. Plus there's Barbara Eden when she was at her most beautiful. Special effects look dated today, but still one of my all-time favorite movies.

Here was the tell: Oriental hocus pocus? He replies: I am a MAJOR Mystery. Not Capt. Not Lt. The town was corrupted beyond belief and going undercover in yellowface was the only way to confront each of the 7 sinners and expose their deviltry. He literally turned the whole town on its ear. Its a brilliant metaphor for Hollywood. And Tony laughs and says: "that's showbiz!" to underscore the sting operation. Its an adult masterpiece disguised as a children's film. Watch it again with this Wild Wild West Artemis Gordon aka Pinkerton concept in mind and be amazed.
