Imo aventurine's trailer showing his vulnerable side would've decreased the effect of the narrative shift in 2.1 for newer players. The trailer is just like Aventurine, putting up a grand show while hiding his fear of losing very well.

Yeah. It’s his entire personality to be superficial. The entire quest was him talking to himself and not opening up to anyone, it was more self realisation. This was explicitly stated multiple times in the quest… of course he isn’t showing anything

We also saw in the trailer they sneaked a bit of fear/anxiety in his trailer When he was about to reveal the die, his hand was behind his back, showing us that he was hiding his uncertainty. That's pretty on brand with Aventurine who always have a confident front as if everything is playing out exactly how he wants it to

Imo, it seems like they compromised the idea of making 4* char trailers so that they can allocate more resources for the 5* chars trailers. A shame really considering how some of my fave songs in Genshin came from 4* char trailers.

@@shishiroro6351 at the end of the day the trailers are intended to hype up the upcoming release of the new 5* character and thus would get the time and attention to making them as opposed to the 4*, but they do still get a video showcasing their abilities narrated by Owlbert similar to how Dainsleif and the occasional Alice would talk about character abilities, though not in the same talk show format as the 5* characters get.

Kinda surprising Serval even has a trailer, given that she's "only" a 4* (March doesn't count, she's main crew). Personally, because I'm biased and I think it fits his character of not being a show-off very well, I'd put Jing Yuan into B tier. Huohuo would be A tier for me but other than that, I actually agree with everything. And that's even with me not liking Kafka as a character (her trailer is just so damn good) and my most watched trailer being Blades (the music and style is just so good) still agreeing to their ranking.

I liked seeing these from a more animation-oriented perspective. I'm definitely biased towards trailers with memorable line deliveries and music timings over animation. I legit listened to Black Swan's on repeat because of her voice, and the music in Seele's, especially the shift when Bronya comes in, really hits for me. That said, I think they try to reserve the more emotional backstory stuff for the Myriad Celestia Trailers, (Ruan Mei's made me go from apathetic to insanely intrigued) especially when it conflicts with their in-game persona. Aventurine has a sad backstory, but as a playable character he's all bravado, meanwhile Acheron is much more serious when you play her, so she gets a more serious trailer. It's similar to Genshin in that way. Furina and Nahida come to mind as characters with VERY different vibes between their respective trailer and teaser. I think it's awesome that HSR does multiple videos for the characters, since the trailers seems to be more marketing oriented (They legit use them as youtube ads), while the others can really add depth to the characters and overall world building.

I agree with pretty much every single one of your picks XD only ones id maybe be slightly different were: Topaz down to A. Blade up to S. Jing Yuan and Fu Xuan up to B. But i was on the border for those, so its easy to interchange. I liked the beat drop for Fu Xuan's trailer, which raised it a tad for me based on that alone. Jing Yuan, I LOVED the imagery for it, the beat, and i remember being utterly blown awau when he summoned Lightning Lord the first time in that trailer. That trailer has kinda gone down to a B over time for me as more beastly trailers have come out. Blade's was the one that got me utterly bought into HSR, and made him my favorite male character. Jing Liu is my favorite female character, but yeah, i agree her trailer didnt go as crazy as a lot of others went. But Blade's was just soooo good. And that changeup where he gets stabbed still is so awesome to see! The color effects, music, his voice over. Loved it. Topaz, it was funny, i agree. The Herta scene carries it, along with the beat. But other than those two parts, i never really found it to be as top tier as some others have put it. I actually enjoyed Black Swan, Silver Wolf, Argenti and Dr. Ratio's more, even. Maybe my bias against Topaz as a character went there too, idk. My top 3 are the same as yours. Also, Kafka and Sparkle are interchangeable for me XD Huo Huo for 4, and Blade for 5.

Camon now, we got more than enough Aventurine Angst in the Main Story, why put it in the trailer, let him be happy for once hahaha 😂. Beside, is not Best Trailer, but I don't think it need to be, because is PERFECT For HIM. I've seen many people disappointed, but first, people really expected Acheron/Sparkle level? And Second, the reason I think is perfect is because its cool, fun and intense just like he presents himself to people and the world. Argenti's is Delulu like him, Black Swan's is Mysterious and menacing like her, Sparkle's is Chaos and insanity like her, Acheron's is Melancholic and powerull like her, and Avneturine's is Fun and Cunning like Him. He never shows his vulnerable side, ever, we only see him like that with the Hallucinations of Himself and with Acheron at the end, he didn't show that side of him to the IPC either, he talked to Jade and his Slave Master with Smug Overconfidence in spite him most likely being scared and them knowing his past, living up to the "Sigonian" Stereotype. So with the Trailers being about the Characters Themselves, his Trailer and the music was Perfect, we only get a glimps of his other side at the end with little Kakavasha and the closing note being a bit slower and chill in comprison to the rest of the music. I mean, *His whole trailer is him doing a Life and Death Gamble fighting monsters while shaking some dice, just like he always does going around beting his life like its not a big deal* But Anyways, I think Aventurine's Trailer is perfect in its own right, but My Favourite Trailer is Sparkle's. I love the crazy bish haha

Agree with a lot of these. Himeko's beat drop always get me in that "lump in throat" mood and I can't explain it. Jingliu I wish was in A because it really hit emotionally for me on the drop, but I guess it's a matter of being invested in her story and cue into that, but visually, yes there were others that did more. I think it's at least on par with Blade's, rubs shoulders with Silverwolf's with how tailor made it is for the featured character, and a step below those that gave us a short movie basically. Acheron's is by far the best with the journey it took you on, holy. Sparkle's was just an emotion I didn't know how to name. It really showed us who she is, more than what the game gives us. 10/10 for those two. Kafka's was very well made, very well directed, intentional, but it didn't hit that extra mile that only the trailer reveals to you. "Impressive" is what I felt, but didn't come out of it understanding/seeing more of Kafka other than what was already said before. 9.5/10

Nice video! My top 3 is exactly the same, although Kafka’s & Acheron’s are close and in a league of their own. I love how critical you are, no ‘all are amazing in their own way’. Only thing that made me frown is your take on Serval’s trailer. The fact that she’s singing this amazing pop tune already makes it a hit for me, but I also love the nineties pop color elements and the pacing. It's fun when people react to trailers of media they like and be hyped about them, but there's just something very satisfying(?) or fun about people with some kind of professional knowledge about the subject reacting to things. Weither this be knowledge in music, animation, movie production, etc. or even knowledge about a certain topic related to the story of the trailer. Even if they don't break it down completely, they always manage to point out things I, who is very much inexperienced on the topic, had missed. 👍

There are a few things I would like to add here regarding some trailers, because they require some deeper analysis and - well I just love to do that, but I understand that others dont, so I want to share a bit. The first Trailer id like to touch on is... Jing Yuan. To understand the central theme, lets first look at Jing Yuans personal Position: Hes the General of the Divine Foresight, as such commands the Cloud Knights of the Xianzhou Luofu, one of the Six Charioteers, and an Arbiter-General of the Hunt. As such, he is an emanator of Lan the Hunt, and incredibly versed in Combat, he has access to the Lightning Lord, a Spirit granted by Lan to the Arbiter-General, and a Glaive - called Starfall Reverie - that was forged from the remains of Lans Lux Arrow and weighs almost 18 metric tons. He is also the disciple of the former Xianzhou Sword Master. Despite this, he is not particularly known for his raw combat prowess but admired for his keen strategizing, often winning before the actual fighting even takes place. He is also a Xianzhou Native, meaning that he will live approx. 1000 Years before succumbing to Mara, at which point he will pose an immense danger to Xianzhou should he not be defeated. In the Trailer, he is playing Chess - Xianzhou Star Chess, a fictional version based on Chinese Chess/Elephant Chess/Xiangqi - against his own student, Yanqing. Yanqing himself is training to be an excellent swordsman, with his temper getting in the way of greater success - he wants to score quick wins rather than advancing overall. By the time the "fighting"-part of the trailer starts, Yanqing has forced Jing Yuan into a stalemate, a draw, which in Chinese Chess is called "Eternal Life". This represents the Xianzhou's current struggle, which Jing Yuan seeks to end. In the end of the Trailer then, we hear from Yanqing that the General has stolen a chess piece - which he then throws up, allowing us to see that it was indeed one of his own pieces that he stole, enabling Yanqing to win. This can be seen as symbolic for Jing Yuans plan long term: He wants to teach Yanqing how to be a good fighter, and then, whent he Mara - The "Enternal Life" - strikes him, he enables Yanqing to defeat him. Silver Wolf I dont think her playing HI3rd is just an easter Egg. It is, in fact, a glimpse into the Honkaiverse. We know that Welt Yang came from the HI3rd Universe, and we know that Silver Wolf is so adept at Hacking that she can change reality. This is called Aether Hacking, and its a bit of a gag, but she seems to be the only one aware that she exists inside a game. Kafka. Okay, this will be quite exhaustive. In fact, I dont know where to begin. The trailer is actually a work of art, and may well be one of the greatest pieces of Media of the modern age. Kafka herself is named after Franz Kafka, a bohemian writer who's best known for "Die Verwandlung" ("Metamorphosis"), in which the main protagonist, Gregor Samsa, wakes up to find himself turned into a giant bug. The references are not just nomenclative: Kafkas entire look is styled around bugs and Spiders. Her Spirit Whisper looks like a spiderweb, in the Trailer she is literally in a spiderweb, Her glasses are above her eyes on her forehead, giving her the appearance of having 4 Eyes, She wears her suit jacket without the arms, making it look like she has 4 Arms, the clasps of her Attire are somewhat reminiscent of mandibles... There are so many nods to this, its difficult to write them all down. The Music is also pretty intense, what we're hearing is Vivaldis Winter played against Vivaldis Summer. Visually, we get a clue at the very end, when she does her "bridge part", basically, three words are shown - MacGuffin, Non-Linear Structure, and Oneiric Structure. These are terms used in theater writing, which makes sense her given that Kafka is a Stellaron Hunter following Elio, who in all Likelyhood is an emanator of Terminus the Finality and in possession of a "Script" containing important events. It is then not at all surprising that all these three terms find application in the actual Trailer: The Macguffin is the Museum shes in, which she purely breaks into for the trailers plot to start, The Non-Linear Structure is shown when we first see her descend from floor 2 to 1, then get to see her getting to that point, and the Oneiric Structure - used to describe dream like visuals and structures - is her mind-controlling the guards as well as the Rorschach tests in the beginning. In much the same way, then, These three can be seen as references to the entire game. The MacGuffin is the Stellaron, by extension the Player, The Non-Linear Structure might be everying to Kafka given that she - or at least Elio - know of the Outcomes due to their Script, And the Oneiric Structure could be tied back to the very fabric of the game itself given that we (can) use Oneiric Shards to get Stellar Jades. If we take Silver Wolf into account, the entire Game may well be likened to a digital version of a lucid dream. Imbibitor Lunae This one is very symbolic. Firstly, Dan Heng is a Vidyadhara (always get the word wrong), which means that he is not functionally immortal like the Xianzhou or Blade, but conceptually. He can die, but that he will go into Molting Rebirth and be reborn as another reincarnation, living an eternal cycle of birth, life and death. It is this concept that is intrinsically tied to him by way of him being a direct scion of Long the Permanence. At the same time, this Permanence leads to certain issues: If the Vidyadhara die for good without getting into their Molting Shell, their overall numbers dwindle, as they do not reproduce, only reincarnate. If, however, all Vidyadhara were to die, their non-existence would violate the laws of Permanence established by Long the Permanence. It is thus the main objective of the Vidyadhara to break this cycle allowing for reproduction. In the trailer, Dan Heng gets confronted with his path as Imbibitor Lunae and fights Phantylia, Emanator of Nanook the Destruction, who is also tied to the ambrosial Arbor, a gift from Yaoshi the Abundance. He is, symbolically, fighting Birth and life (Yaoshi) as well as destruction (Nanook) and then rebirth (Yaoshi again). He tried this once before when he sook to revive his friend Baiheng using the Flesh of an Abundance Emanator, an event that is called "The Sedition of Imbibitor Lunae", which led to his sentence of Molting Rebirth and eternal banishment, and which is what Phantylia most likely refers to when she says "Do you think you have a choice this time?" at the very end of the trailer. The trailer then shows Imbibitor Lunaes internal as well as external struggles. JingLiu Not much to say here, other than the symbolism of her fighting not just abundance creatures but also herself. In fact, if you look closely at the scenes where all of the ice stalagmites are impaling people, its actually her being impaled over, and over, and over, showing how the has essentially killed herself in her bid to become a vessel for her blade to starve off the Mara. Fun Fact: She discarded her old Sword (Blade has it now) and is now using a sword made of her Ice Power as well as, if the Lore is correct, a sliver of actual Moonlight that she carved out of the night sky (Hence "A blade of Moonlight!" when she enters her special stance).

I think its still intriguing that so far (and probably only) March 7th and Serval are the only 4* characters to have their own dedicated trailers. While granted the production value on them were fairly limited and like many early 1.0 trailers mostly made use of their in-game animations to try, hoyo still decided to show them off before the game was even released. I can understand with March 7th why since she has essentially become the mascot for HSR.

acheron and sparkle's trailers are easy top 2 picks, though the cinematography in Your Color is on a whole 'nother level even compared to Monodrama so i'd put that as number 1 Topaz is my personal 3rd favorite for making a really strong impression at the start (and yeah its also really funny) and Black Swan in a very close 4th oh yeah and why in the god damn hell, hoyoverse, does Welt not have his own character trailer, this man DESERVES an s-tier trailer

I feel like my hottest take in all of HSR is that I thought Acherons trailer was pretty meh. I loved the visuals however the first half I found pretty boring. Her just fighting Sparkle clones felt pretty random to me and it's not really giving anything in relation to who she is as a character. The 2nd half was way better, but I still feel like there was just a lack of cohesion between the parts. Everything just felt like random stuff happening without any reason or any purpose. I absolutely love Acheron as a character and I've tried but her trailer was just not doing it for me

The selling point for her is hype. Most people don’t care for a coherent trailer. They would rather have a more hype one. For me, the music was kind of a turn off from the trailer, I just didn’t like it and I was more hyped to see the other characters involved than Acheron herself. The trailer did feel kind of messy.

Hard agree for most of rankings, and so happy to see Topaz's trailer getting some praise, I loved how funny and quirky they made it haha. Also a tiny detail from Aventurine's trailer, when he pulls up the cup and reveals his stacked dice, his other hand is hidden behind his back. I like to think that's a reference to what his future self says: "They only see your big bets, your bravado, the full house, the straight flush. They don't know the other hand is below the table, clutching your chips for dear life." (He also hides his hand holding a chip behind his back during the boss battle)

Well first time I read it I did registered as Adventurine until I realized that the IPC names are based on minerals when they mentioned other names in 2.1 story. Another reason is that he has "the will of D", hence his good luck.

I think what really made Sparkle's trailer stick out was how different and weird (in a good way) the whole thing was when the character trailers that came before her either had chill or chill-looking characters or the vibe wasn't as intense/unhinged. Ruan Mei, Dr. Ratio, and Black Swan all look so composed the whole time during their trailer as if they don't care. And then here comes Sparkle having an unhinged trailer almost immediately, then seeing her in the game being just as unhinged and chaotic made it better. Pretty much no effort was spared in making that trailer unsettling.

Top 3 I agree with, and most of these I would rank similarly. I think the one I disagree with the most is Himeko and Jing Yuan, I think their placement should be flipped. I liked the drums in Jing Yuan's and how he was shown to have a humorous relationship to his disciple. Himeko's felt like a whole lotta nothing and can put me to sleep

Finally! Some Topaz love. I never see anyone talking about her. I pulled her when she came out (mostly because i needed a fire unit) and haven't regretted it. One of my most used characters. I also really like her character in-game and think she had quite a strong story for the short amount of time that we saw her. Have to disagree with the placement of Luo's trailer though

To put it in the way she'd say, you've made a really smart investment. In the long run topaz is indeed a better investment compared to the likes of jingliu and dan heng. Plus she's pretty good for SU with elation path. So yeah, I can see why

it actually makes sense for Aventurine trailer to be so bland so that the people who don't know his lore kinda start to wonder! he's supposed to be shown as this perfect winning guy but it makes u wonder who he really is. At least when i first saw his trailer before i knew his lore i could tell there was something deeper going on and i was NOT disspointed

Honestly they did Fu Xuan dirty, like they literally just had her list off her basic/skill/talent ("Novaburst", "Shown by Hearts", "Woes of Many Morphed to One"). It's like the script writer didn't sync their Google Drive and lost part of the script. I thought Ruan Mei's trailer was very mid, but watching an amateur filmmaker comment on it, it's a bit more interesting than I thought. They also pointed out that BS' trailer is all about multiple layers of framing. Like there's the framing of the camera, and the shot is literally framed by a picture frame, and then BS is inside a different picture frame. Very interesting.

yeah a lot of the Luofu character trailers were not that interesting (Bailu, Yanqing, Jingyuan, DHIL) Jingliu's was good, but it seemed to be more an insight to her internal struggles against herself (or of her past) than anything. Still lots of great excellent shots showcasing her skill with the blade and her association with the moon Fuxuan is kinda mixed, some of the shots are pretty good and her abilities are gorgeous, especially her Ult. Her saying her abilities as she does them kinda reminds me of how a lot of anime has characters doing so, so perhaps its a callback to that. The comic relief of adding Qingque was an odd but fun choice. Huohuo's trailer is by far the best among the Luofu cast

Probably a hot take but I prefer Black Swan's and Acheron's, Sparkle's and even Jingilu's and Ruan Mei's trailers over Kafka's. I like it when a trailer makes me intruiged about someone while Kafka was just her killing security (still really cool though dont get me wrong).
