Nice work. Very hard to stand up next to the roof pulling off the nails and then replacing them again. And you did this to help a single mother. You are a good hearted man. I don't understand all the rude know-it-all critics...wish they had half the humanity you do.

You are the first video I looked up, I just had a man come to my mom's home (Doublewide home) and he has put on just the street-facing "End of the home" panels, he has kept upping already settled pricing and today since my mom said we had agreed to finish the trim and he said he would paint it also (Signed this on paper) we paid for the panels and the paint supplies, he has now stopped working and we let him go. I am disabled and so is my mother. We can finish it ourselves, even though, I just found this video very helpful, Thank you...

In my work I charge by the hour, every minute costs my customers, so time is money. However I have other videos where I have used OSB for siding in the same manner as I did on this mobile home, Also I started a new play series in my Playlists (These Old Mobile Homes) sharing some stuff there, I will be adding more content to it in the future, We have a lot going on right now, don't know how much longer we will be working thanks to the COVID-19

I realize this is an older video, but wanted to make a comment on the “don’t caulk the z-flashing” . As a repair person that has dealt with many rot situations, I agree the video, caulk it. Two points , I rarely saw water damage behind the siding that would have been relieved by leaving the z uncaulked . The water never makes it that far as typically there was not enough barrier, ie. house wrap, to direct it down to the z flashing. A bad leak in that case ends up in the wall. Good reason to use wrap. My second point in favor of caulking the z flashing is more times than not what I have had to deal with is rain water getting trapped by the z and being “sucked into the end of the siding and causing the bottom 1-6” to rot because the end of the siding was never primed or sealed. If that is not done by the original installer, there is no way to do it in the future, solution: caulk it. I would also note , be sure to caulk around the trim to siding edge. That , with good quality latex paint will make that siding last a good long time. I know I was taught don’t caulk the z as well but real world facts changed my practices. Ps. Same goes for the seams between the panels, caulk them, I see rain get in there time and again despite the supposed “Locking seal” .

I was gonna comment similar to Blue Collar - Where we live in the high desert (CA), we get continuous strong wind and rain that literally blows water into every little crack. Caulking prevented mist of this seepage. I DID get some great tips from this video! 👍🏼 Wish I knew before! 😂

Sounds like more weight than the walls and floor can handle when you say metal. Probably 2×3 maybe 2x4. I was thinking of adding cement board siding 4x8 sheets that are only 80 lbs. That 3,840 lbs added to my 2x6 walls. But the floor is only 2x6, it needs to be 2x10 to support that much weight. You may have problems later especially if some day it's to be moved. Yes ive found a few no one could move. Most because of a newly installed shingle roof.

It's possible; Most metal sided mobile homes has horizontal pieces of wood running from one end of it to the other, around 2 ft on centers, I think you can remove the screws 4 ft at a time before installing the wood siding. I'm in my 3 manufactured home, that happened because the sealant wasn't maintained on that lower trim piece. And if you're going to reside, the right way if you plan on staying in it is, first 15/32 cdx, then tyvek paper it, then siding, T1-11 or Hardi board and don't put that directly over the cdx seams, stagger it. Nail are 6" apart at the edges, 12" in the field.

Adding on additional siding pieces, and water running behind the new, is what happened to a used mobile home, that I bought a few years back. The prior owner had added on vinyl siding, covered the whole mobile home in it, but did not add a roof-over. Without the added roof-over, with a good ***long over-hang*** , then the water ran down between the new siding and the original. It is ok to add on new siding, just ensure that there is a good new roof with a long over-hang preventing water from getting in there. Those old mobile homes will need a roof over at some point, should be as one puts on the new siding. My suggestion is that no one uses vinyl siding, it's cheap, and does not withstand time. It may be trendy, but who cares about that, as what really matters is how long it will last. I would want a new ceramic tin roof, and roof-over, long over-hang, and also added protection by a porch-like length going all the way around the mobile home to prevent water leakage around windows. I would also prefer the ceramic tin be used as siding on the mobile home. It would be costly, but outside of a full big roof-over, so no water comes in contact with the mobile home, it would be difficult to preserve it. Those kept under cover, in a building, a big roof-over, or extensive roof system with long over-hang, have proven to stand the test-of-time, those with no water hitting them have lasted since the 1940's and 1950's, just as the newer mobile homes could if kept totally dry.

dont caulk the top of Z flashing on the bottom of the T-111 that the point of release of anything behind it, the gutter should go under the roof tin were the staples were holding it down so water stays on top of seal, top to bottom of wall , window goes under siding under tyvex wrap or radiant barrier to stop air and heat from moving thru openings. Trailer tin work tends to not seal back as well when you put it back down .If water does get in on ya just use Red Guard membrane sealer ,don't need to clean the hell out it first, goes right on lasts forever.

It's very hard to pull all them screws and nails because of the caulking and find a fresh place for a screw to grab hold. Ive seen roof blown off after a residing jop. Mabey just cut along top a straight line. Install a drip rail and caulk like crazy. If only they would put eves on like a regular house, it would even look better. Because of the lower siding rotting out due to skirting. I have learned to put skirting under and behind the siding. Of all the skirting ive tried on the rentals in my park, ive now gone back to metal, preferably aluminum heavy gauge. I've spent a lot of time doing trailer house repairs . And some ideas became do overs.

this job was labor only; as the owner provided all the materials, she is a single mother on very low income. Also she bought her windows at a discount due to damage, if you notice in the video they have broken edges. I was hired to just install what was there, as she and her children attempted to try and do it themselves. I gave her a half price discount. Thanks for watching. Also please read previous comments on the video.

@TheBlueCollarPreacher
@TheBlueCollarPreacher 4 жыл бұрын
The price depends on what material you use, how big your mobile home is, who's doing it, etc. This cost the lady $40.00 a sheet for siding, she got her window at a discount due to some slight damage. Her total cost in material was around $700.00. I only charged her $25.00 an hour for labor as she was a single mother. my labor was around $400.00 total. Also keep in mind hurricanes cause plywood materials to fluctuate in prices I've seen this siding range from $30-50 a sheet. Thanks for watching.

It's not necessary to caulk the drip edge. In fact it can trap water inside once it shrinks and pulls away as it runs between the cracked caulk and the siding and can rot the new siding.

Technically you should reseal around your windows every so many years. As long as the leak isn't coming down from the roof, it's very likely coming down the side of your exterior walls to your window and the seal has failed, allowing water to enter into the backside of the window. The easiest and cheapest way to try on your own, which doesn't require much, is to get a ladder and caulk around them, making sure to seal it well. Be sure to use a silicone for exterior.

All you have to do is clean the old caulking off of the outside edge of around the window really good.(where the edge of the wondow flange meets the wall) And then go to home depot and buy a caulking gun and a tube or 2 of exterior window silicone or caulking. And then just re caulk around the window, and it will stop leaking. Only cost you like $20

Just this last month it has doubled because we are heading into hurricane season. Labor depends on location.
