Working Equitation, the new, competitive discipline developed in the 1990s from the style of working riders in Southern European countries, such as France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, has its roots in the work of herdsmen throughout the centuries. Competitions are divided into four phases: dressage, ease of handling, speed and cattle penning. Pedro Torres of Portugal is the sport’s most winning trainer and competitor. He guides viewers through the various requirements placed on horse and rider and demonstrates how to introduce an inexperienced horse to its first obstacles on a Working Equitation trail.

I feel like he doesn't really need that leverage bit.

Anne, the whole point in classical horsemanship is to develope the horse to be so light in the hands that you dont need it. But the bit helps the aids be even lighter. The horse will pick up on even the slightest movement of the hands by the rider. It isnt the bit, it's who is holding the reins and if the rider has properly developed the horse to resond with lightness. The reason for all of this meticulous training is, not only because it makes riding incredibly rewarding for both horse and rider, but also in the event there should be an equipment malfunction you would still be able to control the horse and be safe.

@@heatherguillory900 Exactly why I said that he doesn't need that leverage bit.. Because people don't know shit, then they watch videos of good riders, riding with leverage bits and all that, and they think that if they just get that stuff, their horse will act just like this one. I think it's about time that good riders show just how little equipment you need to work with the horse.. It's weird that how higher level you are, the more stuff you need to work with the horses.. I know it is because you are in a level that means you can use this correctly and that is why they had this in competition in the first place. But the way the world and industry has changed, this is not the case anymore, so I would like to see less equipment the higher level the horse and rider compete in.. Because today's dressage is a laughing stock of circus tricks..

@@Galemor1 I think more than good examples on youtube, riders need more good and available instructors. I had little knowledge about how to "ride" until I just so happened to move to a place, that just so happened to have an instructor that I could get to to teach me. KZbin is no substitute for a good teacher.

@@heatherguillory900 I agree, but it is a place where people have easy access to information and therefore, should that information be as informative as possible, or at least, that people write informative in the comments, so they can know what others think and start to wonder and maybe even look for that information. I am in it for the horses. The more knowledge people have, the better it is for the horses. If everyone thinks horses standing alone on poststamp sized paddocks, is ok, then they won't ever change that, before they find the knowledge about how horses really wants it. Before they learn to treat every horse according to their different personality.

This horse is ducking behind the bit and hyperflexing into a dangerous position. No self carriage, no seeking contact. This is what happens when you pull the horses nose in, rather than wait for him to reach into your hands. Closed throatlatch, tight neck, hard hands
