It is sort of like the discipline of handy horse!

To do it correctly the horse must have correct basic training, and the rider must have good seat, and be strong and have supple body, just like that you can go up the levels.

Everyone is hanging on to dear life to the two reins.

aaguzman20 ...Shame isn't it? I was taught to ride with my left hand, and hold the saddle with my right, UNTIL I FOUND TRUE BALANCE. There is always a job for the free hand, polo mallet, stock whip, spare horses or pack horse, get the gates, carry flag or lance. I mean, put a beginner on a horse and expect him to attain balance while using two hands on the reins, they balance off the reins and cause hard horses and then wonder why there are problems.

@ .39 .. perfect example of what agonising pain these magnificent horses have to go throughout JUST for your entertainment. Another equine agonising and barbaric sport for human entertainment!

+Karen Mitchell Oh get over yourself. Dressage, done correctly, is to improve the ability of a horse to carry a rider and is progressed through slowly over the years. It is a wonderful sport. There are individuals who pull the horse in too much, but the majority of riders and horses in the sport are happily enjoying it. By the way, its not like the horse is choking and salivating in that clip. Horses drool when they are chewing on and accepting the bit. A tight lipped horse is one in pain and they are not usually salivating. I competed in three day eventing for many years and all the horses I rode were happy about the dressage phase (though even more excited for cross country!)

If they hated it, they wouldn't volunteer at the gate!! We all need a job, to feel good about ourselves. And, if you had actually worked with horses, saying they are miserable, is like saying dancing couples are miserable. Horses have been bred to work with humans at various jobs, for centuries. They are intelligent, and a human partner can understand when their friend, whom, by the way, has more money spent on him, than most of us can make in a year, and that friend is not responding to the riders core cues, and the rythym of the dance, that something needs adjusted. Horses that are exercised regularly, and understand their job, and aren't experiencing pain, enjoy all interaction with their people, and some other horses. An athelete learns to perform their sport, with balance and discipline, and all the muscles need trained over time. Educate yourself. Watch mustangs, how they control one another, with teeth and heels, ear pins and posturing. If the horses didn't like it, they wouldn't tolerate it. Poorly handled horses become defensive, and aggressive, and difficult to handle. Then it takes a steady hand, to build trust in them, again. Without trust, and a symbiotic relationship, you have nothing when working with horses, or any living creature. Horses become your best friend, when you are creating a masterpiece.

...You would not be here today to criticise like this if your ancestors had not been able to "ride for the doctor".

Have you ever danced!? With someone you love!? Yes, there are greedy individuals, that take it to a bad place, but, most of us that keep horses, do so, because we love them. They make our hearts swell with joy. We give up almost everything for their sake. But, when we practice, together, and you can hear the music in your head and soul, the two of you dance a glorious dance, together. The horse comes to the stall door, and volunteers to come play, if you've made it as fun for them, as it is for you. You, have not learned of the magic of melded souls.

To ride in the Portuguese horsemanship style is a matter of harmony and balance, it’s teamwork. The horse doesn’t fight the commands of the rider nor does the rider force the mount. From the start, the horse is treated and trained gently, in order to understand and willingly comply with the indications of the rider and never being forced into any action. Indeed, that’s very different from what you see in Western movies, where they usually “break” and subjugate the horse, and absolutely unacceptable in Portuguese horsemanship. Watch carefully how Pedro Neves rides (and other Portuguese, like Pedro Torres and Gilberto Filipe, for example). That’s why the Lusitano pure bred horses are, by definition, gentle and willing, always eager to please the rider and looking for indications. I challenge you to try out, see by yourself and talk to our trainers, maybe even have some lessons, and then I believe that you will understand.
