This diagram really cleared up the wiring layout for me. It is just as, the used trailer I purchased is wired. Except the manufacturer used all the wrong color wires and the damaged lights no longer work. Im having to rewire , replace the trailer connector, add and ID Bar on back , and replace most of the running and marker lights. Thanks for posting this.

Can I add additional running lights to the running light wire? I won't to add colored side lights on the trailer. What kind of 12 volt item could I use? Hope these aren't dumb questions. Great video. Very clear. Thanks
@joetheboatguy539411 ай бұрын
Hi ecook, thanks for watching and nice comment. They are no dumb questions; all questions are valid here 😊. You can connect any 12V rated lights. Even led light strips if you want. BUT if you go with led lights make sure all your lights are led in the circuit. Not good to mix and match led and halogen lights. All your lights should be connected in parallel. Also make sure you respect the laws of color lights in your part of town (if they are any LOL). PS: one thing to considered, when connecting light in parallel you will need more amps. Make sure you have the right fuse for your running lights (especially for halogen). Let me know if this helps 😊

Hi Atubeviewer, Thanks for watching. That is a great idea, I didn't think of that. For now here you go. Splice the blue wire from the breakaway switch to the blue trailer brake wire from the breakaway battery box. Splice the black wire from the breakaway switch into the Trailer 7-way connector brake circuit. The color of the brake circuit may vary trailer to trailer. Splice the red battery positive wire from the breakaway battery box to the Trailer 7-way connector 12V+ auxiliary power circuit. The color of the 12V+ auxiliary power circuit may vary from trailer to trailer. Attach the white wire from the breakaway battery box to the trailer chassis using a ring terminal or Splice with white trailer wire. hope this helps

When troubleshooting the pig tale, how many volts the blue wire should read? Great video
@joetheboatguy53944 ай бұрын
Hi sightseer, thanks for watching. The amount of power coming out of the brake controller depends on the adjustment of the gain on the controller. To test the voltage at the highest gain setting, you will want to sever the Blue wire a few inches from the back of the controller. Then, you will want to test the voltage coming out of brake controller at maximum gain setting. You should get around the same voltage as the Black wire, slightly less. The amount of voltage at the trailer connector will also vary depending on the gain setting of the controller. You can test to make sure you are getting signal at the trailer connector by using a circuit tester to test the Blue wire. If you are getting voltage and signal at the rear of the controller and the trailer connector, the next step would be to test the trailer brake magnets

Why do the L/R Turn and Stop Lights use the same wire? How do they work?
@joetheboatguy5394Ай бұрын
Hi huanqingwu, thank you for watching, When you press on your breaks, both the green and yellow wire will send a constant 12 V at the lights, that will mean that your brakes lights will be on. When your right flasher on your vehicle is on, your green wire will receive a on and off 12 V so it will make your light flash Same goes for the left side with the yellow wire. Now, if you have your brakes on and your right flasher on at the same time. Your green wire will receive on and off 12 V, and your yellow will have a constant 12 V. So the right side will flash and the other side will be constant On. Let me know if this helps 👍

Great video, all my wires are wired the same as your video but when my running lights are on and I plug in my trailer in to truck the taillights on truck get brighter. Any ideas?
@joetheboatguy5394 Жыл бұрын
Hi chrishawley, thanks for watching, first thing I would do is on the trailer, make sure the connector is clean and free of corrosion. Then you will need to make sure that the main trailer connector ground and the grounds for the all the lights are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. Corrosion will add resistance that can cause voltage change. If they are clean and all wire are fine. Then I would suspect your converter box that can be going bad. Let me know we will figure it out. 👍

@joetheboatguy5394Ай бұрын
Hi Guerrero, thanks for watching, The only difference between 7-Way Utility and 7-Way RV is the color of the wires. The pin outs are the exact same so either would work just fine with the other. For RV it’s usually Green-Tail & Running Lights Black-12V Power Yellow-Reverse Lights Brown-Right Turn & Stop Red-Left Turn & Stop Blue-Brake Controller Output White-Ground

Why would my trailer running lights stay on while the truck is off an parked?
@joetheboatguy53949 ай бұрын
Hi gala83filmstaylorg7, thanks for watching. One reason I can think of why you’re running light stay on is that your auxiliary 12v wire might be connected to your running lights. Or both running light wire and 12v aux wire seen to be connected to running light. Check that out and let us know 👍

@joetheboatguy5394 so you were right the top two pins where wired backwards giving my running lights constant power...I switched them but now my running lights only work with my truck lights turned on instead of auto? Is that normal? It's a 2015 chevy silverado

Hello I have a 06 equipment pro utility trailer, with a white black yellow brown and green wires not sure how to hook up especially e brakes
@joetheboatguy5394 Жыл бұрын
Hello Vincent Aguirre, thanks for watching, usually white is ground for trailers, brown is lights, yellow is left and stop light and green is right and stop light. Your black wire is not usually on trailer wires. What you can do is fallow the wire and see if it goes to your brake. Usually brake is a blue wire unless previous owners change the wires.

the only time a ground wire goes to each light is if it is LED,,the frame is otherwise the ground.

Hi Kevindendy, thanks for watching, I use the frame as ground but not everyone likes doing that. Even on vehicles the frames are usually ground. 👍

There never was a backup lamp wire in the 7 way it was meant to be used for auxiliary battery charging such as the 12 volt battery in your camper for the fridge and lights this way you didn't kill the tow vehicle battery. The trailer brake battery is on a separate circuit as it is dedicated for that area only. Back in the day trailers were never equipped with backup lamps as you don't see them on highway tractor trailers.
@joetheboatguy53943 ай бұрын
Hi michelbroder, thanks for watching. Now a days, the 7 trailer pin has a wire for backup light and a wire for 12v aux. Unless your 7 pin is not standard. 👍
@michelbrodeur60553 ай бұрын
@@joetheboatguy5394 The wiring diagrams I have from Bargman and Pollock show that the #4 terminal wire is for the trailer breakaway battery as it was dedicated for that purpose only and the #7 wire is for auxiliary circuit . I have yet to see a Stock, Flat Deck, Goose Neck, Fifth Wheel , Enclosed Utility or Camper Trailer with backup lamps unless they were installed aftermarket. Also do you see backup lamps on an 18 wheeler trailer as they don't exist as I have that 7 Way diagram also.
@joetheboatguy53943 ай бұрын
Hi michelbroder, i don't make the law but there's a law out there that says: If your trailer exceed 750 kg in weight. The law states that ANY trailer including caravans that exceed 750 kg need to have a fully functioning trailer reverse light. This is specified in Section 6.4 of regulation 48 approval of vehicles with regard to the installation of lighting and light signalling devices.
@michelbrodeur60553 ай бұрын
@@joetheboatguy5394 Where do you live as I have checked every Province and Territory in Canada and also I asked a Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer and according to him there is no requirement for backup lamps anywhere in Canada. When you talk about trailers above 750 kg. you must be in Canada or elsewhere where the metric system is in use.
@joetheboatguy53943 ай бұрын
@michelbroder6055. I found this on the web for Canada. « Many times, drivers think that just because their taillights might be visible over a low-profile trailer, operating lights on the trailer are optional. Yet in all jurisdictions in Canada, if you are going to tow a trailer, it must have operating running, brake, signal, and (dependent on size), reverse lights.Jul 13, 2017 cc »
