Here we go. A guided tour of my toolbox but instead of just bragging about what I've got, I'm going to show you how I use 'em.

I did that metric marking on imperial spanners too few weeks back. The old style britool spanners are as good or possibly better than snap on, i have a few armstrong tool ones aswell, also very good.

I have a few Halford Professional now, since Snap-On would not replace my 3/8" drive ratchet that I bought in 1974. The mechanism broke last year, and is now unavailable. I thought they should supply a new ratchet, but no. I use lots of Whitworth sizes on my 1956 Norton. I agree, open ended as a last resort, unless you want to round the nut off.

I would never buy another snap on tool if that happened to me

Hi Mike....Halfords Professional range of tools are very good and on the trade card good value, ive been using a 1970's halfords 1/2 drive ratchet for years, it even has an oil hole to lubricate the ratchet mechanism, i gave it to our son who is both a heavy and light vehicle mechanic and the ratchet is still going strong......

would like to see a head to head with say a snap on tool and a bergen\sealey\silverline tool. would have to be a daily used tool to get enough wear. I allways have this argument with a friend who has snap on and takes the mick of ebay tools, but i say they can do the same job as his spanners that cost multiples more. would love to know the break even point if it exists.

I like the direction of how youre taking the channel Chris, yes tool reviews are a pretty interesting topic , showing long term use of tools how they hold up etc .. my personal favorite tools are Britool, I bought a bunch of them from an agent some time ago, i r really like the 75 degree offset spanners , i have a very nice set of Stahlwille in my toolbox at work, Cheers Chris.

Now that is a good shout Think how much you would have to shell out if you were to buy big spanners Yes a/f is a cross flat's W/w is the size of the threads (diameter) Not that long ago battery terminals were all w/w 5/16

Whilst I agree that in some instances nothing comes close to snap on, for instance my lineman pliers, £53 back in 2004 when I was earning about £300 take home as a Hgv mechanic, I do feel that over £400 for a basic spanner set is out of reach for most apprentices trying to build their kit is really taking the piss. I had a mortgage at 22 so I had to make a compromise between price and quality. Britool or Gedore were always a good compromise for me but my 3/8 ratchet is actually an Halfords Professional, did many many years in the trade with it and lots since and its never had the ratchet mechanism replaced. At the time as a young man with responsibilities, paying my mortgage seemed more important than spending vast amounts on tools to fix my bosses trucks.

In hindsight you are right. I always look at tools as consumables. They are not assets that increase in value as do houses.

Hi Chris, what do you use to mark your tools with that orange ink? Is it a paint pen? Do you have any specific one you'd recommend?

I don’t really understand imperial .. except if you ask me how tall I am , how heavy I am, how far it us to the pub, how fast I’m gonna drive there & the quantity of beer I’d drink .. in which case you can forget metric

Why are ring spanners always 12 point? Can you even get 6 point combination spanners?
@heavydiesel2 жыл бұрын
Have seen six point ring spanners so they are available.
@trailerfitter22 жыл бұрын
yeah you can get 6 point but they are not popular.
@alistairjackson81502 жыл бұрын
This was a great video. Really interesting to see the confidence you have in 12 point spanners. Do you ever feel a 6 point is required to avoid rounding? I always worry with sockets.
@trailerfitter22 жыл бұрын
nope. I've got 6 pointd sockets for that.

@@alistairjackson8150 Hi Alistair.... xi-on sockets are excellent ive been using them for many years now, the inner profile have been designed to grip the nut or bolt securley, even when damaged or corroded, they are very good quality, they have a knurled grip to make it easier to remove from the ratchet or breaker bar. I purchased several sets 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive in both shallow and deep.....you will find numerous sellers on Ebay.....best regards, Stefano.

Bluepoint have a spanner set that is twisted in the middle so you are holding the other end on the flat face rather than the thin edge (meant to stop it digging into your hand) seems like a neat design but don't justify the price in my opinion
