I do too Scott, Rory knows what he does! I wouldn't ask him to remove a 15000KVA transformer, that's what I do. Some keyboard warrior would also tell me how to do that, never listen or even entertain such a comment. I would never tell Rory how to do his work, I just watch and learn.

The guy that said “I have 50 years experience”, never took a course on structural building. Your cables hold that beam. You are correct, your way keeps the beam from flexing side to side. It’s wide. You have cross bracing…….,that’s why I watch you build these things and I keep my thoughts to myself. I’m 76, I’m still learning watching you guys!!!
@alanmumford8806
@alanmumford8806 Күн бұрын
Absolutely. Under load, the pole is mostly in compression, with lateral strength due to the cross-sectional width. The chains are in tension to carry the load, both supporting the pole laterally and tied to the cage and its angled bracing to the frame, which may actually be the weakest link. The geometry works, folks!

Trying my best to hold off on asking why not put the fulcrum of the hang arm pivot forward to the cab (central) to counter the lifting force on the front wheels...decreasing the mechanical advantage? Not really questioning where it is...just want to know how it is engineered for balance and load is all? Physics made me autistic I think. 😬

100% you have the pole around the right way. As you say for normal lifting the pole is in compression. The bending strength is needed in the left-right direction for any those wacky side loads you get when winding from weird angles or towing down a rough track. Keep up the good work. You have a brilliant instinctive knowledge of forces and materials.

The tow pole is a column in compression. A circular tube would be the strongest shape for the least amount of steel. For all practical purposes, the rectangular one is fine and it's probably easier to fit in and weld to.

That pole is oriented correctly because most of the loads it will experience are either in compression as Rory explained, or are lateral loads because the towed vehicle will swing, also when side pulling. Side to side rigidity is very important when forces are acting upon a lever in this way.
