Cool video. Ive spend hundreds of hours at those locations. I would caution about naming them and making it too easy to find those places. Thats why I left California, the back country areas got wrecked. The last time I stayed at Boxcar I noticed more and more grafitti on the walls. Thats what the log book is for. And some 'European Knights' (travelers) branded the cabin. And now there are a bunch of stickers on the window. Dan, the guy who restored that cabin so we can enjoy it, stopped going due to all the trash on the walls. Its remote enough that if you do a little research and pull some clues from other videos, you can find these spots. Its not the destination, its the journey getting there.
@TrailNewbie
@TrailNewbie Жыл бұрын
Yes, I couldn’t agree more that vandalism and trashing trails in public land is the absolute worst! I struggle with keeping the locations completely undisclosed - as I have learned so much from other channels like mine when I am researching various places to go. This is a very appreciated comment, and I will surely consider this in future videos as well. Probably a good reminder also to include in my videos comments about keeping our public lands in excellent shape!

Last time I was in the Panamints several years ago, our camp had to move to a new location unexpectantly. We found a big mine that became operational again and were asked to move. We complied. So Our second party was coming up the next day but we had no cell service to relay our new location. We could have driven back toward Trona that morning but what a hassle that would have been. Well fortunately, I had my Yaesu 870d mobile ham radio and a 10meter vertical antenna. My buddy in the other group has the same set up. We had prearranged to be listening to a particular 10m HF frequency in the band and luckily, we managed to communicate our new and last minute location the next morning. My buddy was some 40 miles away in his truck when we established contact. I was able to tell him our new location after we moved the night before. I was getting some awesome skip over the mountains and 10-meters was “hot” during that sunspot cycle back then.

I know I've lived in the Mojave too long when I immediately know where you are in the first few frames. LOL. Tehachapi is obvious... And passing the Parris law firm billboard. Ugh. Then basically the first few minutes, knew 100% where you were. Even that awful gas station in Trona. heh. I know all those geographic landmarks by heart. Sad, but true!

Great question, I actually only use my iPhone to do all of my filming except for my drone work. The drone I use is a Mavic Air 2. All of my editing is done on my iPhone as well using the iMovie app. I am very minimalist with regard to my editing, software and platform. Plus, being able to edit on my phone allows me to do most of my editing, while on the 🚽 🤣🤣🤣

The mine you guys went through is called the copper queen. Believe it or not, it is the very first mine do you have ever used pneumatic tools in the United States? The shaft that you found in the mine used to have a single man elevator that went up to Lookout city, which is where everyone who worked on the mine lived.

You can fly a drone in DVNP?? I thought they banned them. (Asking for a friend.) 13:32
@TrailNewbie
@TrailNewbie Жыл бұрын
Great question!! The answer as far as I know is no, you cannot fly a drone in any National Park. All drone work in this video was done outside of the National Park and in all cases was on BLM (Bureau of Land Managment) public land. I try my best to adhere to these regulations, but I can see how this might be confusing in the video. The bulk of Panamint valley and the surrounding mountains are outside of the park. 😁😀

@@TrailNewbie I think the only reason that was there was the recent wet weather. Was'nt there when I was. There were some rock climbers there and they showed me where to put my hands and feet. But when I left I had to do it on my own. Only about a 10 foot fall but still I did'nt want to break any bones. The upper falls has the pool you were referencing. I drove the road in a rental car and nearly got stuck but I did'nt see the coy pond. I thought that was a hike to somewhere as I've seen it on YT. When I was at Panamint Springs they were on diesel gens on flatbeds and there was no restaurant or RVs, just a camp ground. No telephone. The owner had a transmitter and as soon as I pulled in he called an armed Forrest Service guy. When he rolled in with a shot gun and looked at me he rolled his eyes. A fat smilling guy sucking a Dos Equis was hardly part of the Manson family. The owner was very paranoid. I know it has all changed. Darwin had electricity and I believe now phones as well as a post office. There is apparently a landing strip in the area. Darwin had some big mines. There was an asian guy at the resort who looked like his mind had been totally zapped by the vast open areas with no people. He just looked stunned. There was nothing at Ballarat when I was there. Went to Chris Weight camp to drive to Panamint City but road was closed. I guess the hike is a killer. Drove by Cerro Gordo but sign said road was private and no trespassing. I understand now its a county road so missed Cerro Gordo before Brett burned the hotel. Would like to see the salt tram.
