Ever wanted to take a close up look of all the repairs being done at a Jeep shop? In this video I convince my good friend Jerry from Shift Autowerx to take me around 20 different Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators, some stock, some built for hard core off-roading and some even for overlanding and share with me what problems they are having, the needed repairs or what aftermarket upgrades they are getting installed.

Jerry is a brave mechanic to reveal all of the issues he hasn't figured out yet. I was a Truck / Heavy mechanic from 1970 til 1984. My specialty was fuel systems and electrical. This is before computers, so diagnosis was all gauges, pumps, and a test light. I made or modified most of my diagnostic gear, but at least the tool box was tiny! Intermittent problems were my life, and they were always tough to explain to the customers. I am impressed he knows the details of so many of the vehicles in his shop, and by the level of innovation he still maintains.

I drive a 21 Tacoma but I still love Jeeps, the way they use to be before Stallantis ruined them. The thing I loved about old jeeps was the simplicity and ruggedness. Toyota is screwing up too with the 4 cylinder turbo, I fully expect and have heard of issues already. My favorite off road truck I have owned is an old FJ60, with a straight 6 and manual transmission. Dead simple.

We tow a 4500lb GTW Cruiser Hitch 17BHS travel trailer with our basically stock 22JT Max Tow. Definitely appreciate the HD towing mods. We were modifying our 14JKU 6speed till we got the JT for towing. Thanks for the info and ideas.

Shift re-geared my 392, installed my Tazer, and installed the Z automotive pigtails to override the locker sensor issue. They will be installing the 3" AEV lift. Great shop to do business with.

RANT WARNING: What stands out to me far above the cool mods that he's doing for some customers is the continuous onslaught of WELL KNOWN jeep problems; Head Gaskets, misfires, flattened cam lobes, mysterious electrical problems, transfer cases in the 392's, etc. My 2011 hemi swapped JK has had nothing but problems. In the past 3 years it has spent a total of 20 months in the shop Not only did I have an over heating problem, a burnt valve, a head gasket issue with the engine, but the ECM has gone hawire a couple of times, the EVAP canister issue seems unsolvable, the TCase and trans have had problems, and I lost a ring and pinion. Not to mention normal wear items like ball joints, wheel bearings, U Joints. Jeep is consistently on top or near the top of the worst cars on the road, right along with Volvo, Jag, and Land Rover. I don't know what to say, but Good Fxxxxing luck if you're a jeep owner. Don't get me wrong I love my jeep when it's working.... love love love it, but I am done emptying my wallet for it. After thousands of man hours in maintenance, 6 figures in cost, and more down-time than up-time I'm going to finally throw in the towel. I dreamed of being a Jeep guy. I tried hard to be a Jeep guy, and now I'm finished being a Jeep guy. I'll continue to watch and appreciate all the great Jeep content being produced with operational jeeps, but I'll be sighing all the while, because I know from experience that, behind the scenes, creators are constantly emptying their wallets to keep these things trail-worthy. Sadly, I also had the misfire issue on my Jeep's 3.6L. And of course, it wasn't under the extended warranty because it is a 2016. To their credit, Jeep refunded 50% of the repair bill which was extremely nice, but still, they KNOW these engines have this issue yet still continue to sell them. There should be something that can be done. I don't know what but it's such a constant issue I would think they could have corrected it by now.

Very nice..I had a 14jk with 268k miles and sold it got 09 jk manual transmission..I like it spent last several months totally upgrading everything underneath...regear 4.88 I really like it.. glad my 14 didn't crap out while I had it. Nice walk thru

We've owned our daughters Jeep for 7 years now. Have had more problems than any other vehicle we have ever owned. It's completely stock and unmodified. We've had to replace axle seals, ball joints, fuel pump, both heads, thermostat twice, misfire problems three times, wiring problems, oil cooler, & A/C compressor, to name a few. All out of pocket repairs except one of the heads. She's never off-roaded it, just drives to school and work. We're trading it in on Monday and can't wait to be rid of it!

Well done, thank you, appears to be a most exceellent shop. I had two Rubicons. One at 45K miles - engine block and manifold went out - and had to be replaced. 6 months later the fuel pump went out. The first case, a long tow, the second case a shorter tow. And then 6 months later the transmission went out & had to be rebuilt. Many sensors, belts, sway bar arms also had to be replaced. I finally traded that in for 20K mile 2020 Toyota 4 runner. I still have the other Rubicon, which was used weeks back for 5 days in the backcountry; six months earlier, new shocks & tires on that one $$$.It's a roll of the dice in my view, some jeeps 'make it', some don't. With the lockers, tires, power they are excellent climbing & on rock; but problems happen. We carry code readers for each vehicle. Thanks Brad, well done.

11:39 Glad to see more people wheeling on beefed up JL-JT 44s on 40s. Seems like a common thing nowadays, probably more JLs-JTs out there wheeling hard on beefed up 44s than tons. But if you can afford tons more power to you, just an observation.

I really enjoy this style of video because it shows me that I'm not alone in facing random mechanical issues with my Jeeps over the years. I've often wondered what was happening with all the impressive rigs at Shift. For years, I was a DIY mechanic, but after meeting Jerry and having him diagnose early issues on my old JK, I've decided to entrust all my suspension and engine work to Shift. Jerry has helped me avoid some potentially disastrous purchases. Up next will be a Rhino Rack and a Metal Cloak Game Changer to replace the Teraflex lift currently on my JL. I saw the Trail Recon Trail Aid Station on a parts run to Napa the other day. It looks way more impressive in person.

I know Jeeps have their issues, but man my modded 2012 JKUR was so good to me, even after 10 years of wheeling. Shops also warrantied it with mods with no problems. This was still under FCA, mind you. I hear Stellantis doesn't like modded Jeeps. Frankly, Jeep needs a new owner. I traded mine in 2021 toward my current Ford Ranger Tremor, which has been perfect so far, but man it has NO soul. I miss my JK every day, and I will absolutely own a Wrangler or Gladiator again at some point. I'm in the process of modding the Ranger to make it mine, which I hope adds some character and feeling to it.

On that white Sierra white Jeep recommends all engine and turbo replacement is so that they get a satisfied customer, especially when installed at a certified car dealership. Rod knock equals bearing debris bearing debris. Go through every single thing including the turbo journals, oil, coolers. Everything related has to be replaced. Cleaning does not 100% guarantee left over bearing debris has been removed so that's why they recommend whole engine replacement. Buy once cry once or in this Jeep's owner's case by twice LOL

2022 Wrangler Sport with the 6 cylinder engine and auto trans getting 23 mpg on the highway, with 18k miles. So far zero issues. Nice review Thanks. 😎

Thank you Brad and Jerry for making and sharing this video! I recently had the clutch in my JK replaced and my mechanic refused to upgrade to a Centerforce. Also couldn’t diagnose a wandering/ twitchy steering issue. Everything in the steering has been upgraded and/or reinforced. I am even more convinced now that I need to make the 3 hour drive to Shift Autowerks and have my rig dialed in. Thank you again!

This was great! Hearing the stories of the Jeeps on the lot was very cool. Maybe a follow up on the status on how things went on some of the builds and repairs would be a good way to invite Jerry back - since you asked. Funny story, we had a misfire and ended up as an injector, simple fix. - add that to the 3.6 list of possibilities. But in the end the motor did us right.

Great, interesting and enjoyable video..I own a 97 80 series landcruiser..Lifted, 35's, adjustable panhard rods, very basic...It's in excellent condition, but only because of the bucks spent on this...I'm not impressed with any of the new toyotas..I have owned this for 25 years, been all over the country...I need this shop to be here in NY city area...hard to find a mechanic here who can work on this...Most of the kids at the dealer have never touched one of these..Anyway, bought my first jeep..A 23 two door Willys...For all the bad reviews about reliability and build quality about this wrangler, I am totally pleased with mine.. I drives perfect at highway speed and steering tracks straight and is tight..For this reason it is still stock...Too many mixed reviews on ride quality after a lift, so I'm hesitant to mod it..At 72, this won't see too many rough trails...It has the 2.0 turbo and only 10,000 miles, so who knows..

EVERY full-time T-Case I've ever had any knowledge of has been a problem child. Long time ago a buddy had a full size Cherokee Chief with the Borg Warner full time case and after he had continual problems I finally convinced him to spend the money on an Atlas II .

One person's millage is pointless, i know guy paying 4k for steering replacement on 4runner right after warranty, i personally had about same repair record on Tacoma as on other American full size pickups including 3th and 4th gen Rams, that is my enlightenment in personal experience, we all have to get lucky

Brad, This was a very interesting video. 2 liter, 3.6 liter, and 392s all have some issues. I bought a 2021 Wrangler 3.0 EcoDiesel and was glad that I didn't see one there. I have 55,500 miles on mine and no issues yet, My fingers are crossed for luck. I do wonder though if many of the issues are due to modifications and that strain other OEM components. I haven't made huge mods but have lifted mine and since it is a Sport have put 33s on it. I can't go everywhere but I can have a lot of fun going to many places. But I haven't ruled out some future mods to let me have more fun. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Brad, great video! I have my 2014Jeep rubicon, at the Jeep dealer here in Catherdral City ca. There fixing oil leaks, replacing the oil cooler housing and the timing chain cover casket. It has about 134,000 miles on it.They gave me a 2018 Jeep JL to use while they do the repair. They treat me ok, don't like taking it to the dealer, but I know the guys there so it should be fine. Would have loved to take it to Shift Autoworks, but this is close to where I live.Thanks for the shop tour!

I recently got rid of a 21 JL that had electrical issues. It was in the shop about 10-12 times sometimes for a week at a time. They could not replicate the issues. I had videos of a lot of the issues but some were so sporadic I could not get them recorded. Once the warranty ran out I knew I didn’t want to foot the bill for electrical exploration and take a chance on a major malfunction while driving.

Good jeep mechanics are hard to find - and when you do they are scheduled months out. However, this video makes me appreciate my 4.0 a little more

I’d like to hear Jerry’s thoughts and maybe fixes for the 2023 Rubicon Gladiator 3.0 Diesel heating up issue. Factory 2 lift. 35 tires, 3:88 gears from factory. Rated to tow from factory 6500 lbs. AZ heat. Great video. Thank you.

It almost sounds like you have to fix or replace parts or upgrade Jeeps all the time just to keep them on the road! My wife has an '08 Wrangler 4-dr, and she is the 2nd owner. The first owner, also a lady, lost the original engine at about 98,000 miles, and had a new take out engine installed. The Jeep now has about 130,000 miles and seems to be running ok, but I have other friends who have unlimited Wranglers and they report engine issues also. It makes you just a little nervous wondering if the V-6 engine will last!

No rubber fender lay down pads during the work. Parked next to that tiny could be metal fence. All accidents waiting to happen.
