Welcome on board the early morning sprinter to Hoorn Kersenboogerd. It's an early Saturday morning and I have just arrived by taxi on Hoofddorp Opstel. My shift of course started in Amsterdam but my train starts here today.
After I gave the train a full reset because of some system failures the train was ready for a brand new day. Just a minute after departure time we are given permission to depart to Hoofddorp as an empty train. This train will start its day with passengers in Leiden so we have to take it to Hoofddorp and then change direction to Leiden. On our way to the platform in Hoofddorp we keep on the left track because it would give conflicts with other trains when changing direction on Hoofddorp station.
After arrival in Hoofddorp we change direction and then depart towards Leiden. The scheduled speed is 100km/h. So we can take it easy. For the first few hundreds of meter we keep the speed low because I wasn't sure we had passed a 130km/h sign (right before our train on departure). Hey, it was very early... So forgive me. Haha. After we pass by the second 130km/h sign we speed up the train to the maximum allowed speed. From the moment the tablet tells me we will arrive on time, we let the train roll out. Trains can roll for a very long time without engine power because of their weight and the fact there's almost no friction between the train and the tracks.
After arrival in Leiden we open the doors of the train and turn on the passenger lights. Welcome on board to the sprinter service to Hoorn Kersenboogerd!
We depart just a little late from Leiden because the train manager was waiting for a passenger that was running from the stairs to the train. At arrival in Sassenheim we are back on schedule, but then one of the doors won't close anymore. At that moment I reopen the doors and give the train manager a hand closing it. After this is done we get back on board and get back on schedule as soon as possible.
On our way to Hoorn we stop on all stations on the route including Schiphol Airport. After departure there it get a little busy on the tracks ahead. You can see this at the light signals not giving the constant green light.
After departure from Amsterdam Sloterdijk there's an intercity running 3 minutes late ahead of us. This means we can't drive on time as well. The intercity runs towards Hoorn and Enkhuizen and won't make a stop in Zaandam. Therefor we can speed up the train pretty soon and get back on schedule again.
On this route you can see a total of four bridges without overhead wires. At this point we just shut down the engines and roll over the bridges. Braking is always still possible but we can't speed up the train when we don't have power wires above us.
After Hoorn we get changed to the left track. This is done because we then can change the trains direction in Hoorn Kersenboogerd for the way back. This isn't always possible. When we have too many trains running the train must be taken to the shunting track little further ahead to change direction. But for this video Hoorn Kersenboogerd is the final stop.

I’ve always wondered how u get such beautiful and amazing picture of ur trains. There is one vid that I wish u did was a day in ur life from when u first wake up to the end of ur night. That would be cool to watch

Hi Justin! Thank you so much! Really appreciated. 😁 Recording a whole day isn't possible in a lot of cases because I don't always have time to hang my camera on the window when taking over a train from a colleague. 😅 Also... I only work 6-9.5 hours a day (average 36 hours a week).

Servus Stefan, ich habe diese Fahrt mit Dir sehr genossen! Ich kannte einen Lokführer der auch gepfiffen hat, ich durfte auch mit ihm mitfahren, mit der Zustimmung des Fahrdienstleiters!!! Herzliche Grüsse aus Bad Vöslau!

What a great trip, once again. Always very detailed and descriptive thanks. One difference between Swedish rail and Dutch rail is no warnings for level crossings in Holland. Or are you advised by radio or something else? Noticed those bits of stuff on the windscreen still survived, even in spite of the good bath they had at Horn. Were they by any chance on the INSIDE of the screen? Good work looking forward to more.

Thanks Geoffrey! There are signs for rail crossings. About 1km before a guarded railway crossing you can alswuas see a white round sign with a number in it. That number is the location in km of the guarded rail crossing. This is the point where the rail crossing will be activated by the train. The sign is there so the driver know if he is already in a section thst activates the rail crossing. Extra warnings we don't need. As a driver you must know from the head where all crossings are located. Haha, no... Bugs are not inside the window.

No, they are controlled by no-one. They start working automatically when the train passes the white sign. And they open as soon as the train has passed the crossover (unless another train has such white sign for that crossing).

Ik woon in Kbg en heb uitzicht op station. Ik begrijp waarom jullie LS rijden. Wat ik niet begrijp, waarom is de IC tussen Hoorn en Enkhuizen IC? Hij rijdt dat traject immers als sprinter.

Ha Evert! Waar staat Kbg voor? Die afkorting ken ik zo niet binnen het spoor. Bedoel je Bkg (Bovenkarspel-Grootebroek)? Tussen Hoorn en Enkhuizen rijden de IC's als stoptreinen omdat ze niet anders kunnen ivm het enkelspoor. Het zijn IC's omdat ze vanuit Enkhuizen tot aan Heerlen en Maastricht vv rijden en niet stoppen op alle tussengelegen stations. 😊😊

@@MachinistStefan Kbg is mijn afkorting voor Kersenboogerd en o ja, Jesse was blij. Hij zag zijn school langskomen (bij de laatste overweg voor Kersenboogerd). Die school heet De Wissel, maar het naambord aan de spoorzijde is helaas verdwenen. Ook bij de metro 020 doen we aan afkortingen. Lelylaan is bij ons Lln en Sloterdijk Sld. Groeten van Jesse. Hij kijkt vaak mee en praat volgens de meester ook vaak honderduit over de treinenvideo's.

A beautiful way to start your day. Graphic reads: VMaxTrack 160km/h>>ATB. What does the ATB stand for? Also below the above graphic, there is a 140 which is the speed you were to or did drive instead of the 160? Weird question - do you wave at other drivers as they pass? Power off for wireless bridges is a simple ON/OFF SWITCH? Why is it necessary to turn the power OFF? Only a few passengers board at the Airport - is that usual for an early morning run? A person with an Orange Cap and a bag, exits up the Escalator - is this possibly a Train Manager in his NS outfit? Hoorn is on the North Sea? Can't translate Markermeer which I see on the paper map I have. Thanks for a great trip.

Hi Paul! 1. ATB is a safety system on board of the train. That's the system you constantly hear the pings and the bells from. On the commuter trains the maximum speed on the ATB is 140km/h. Only Thalys has ATB+ which can show the 160km/h speed. 2. Yes we wave! 😁 3. It's simply making sure the train isn't using the engines for more power. If you do a huge power flash can damage the powerline and the pantographs. 4. On a Saturday morning that's pretty normal. Also... We still have corona going around the world and not many flights at the airport. 5. Could be anyone. Working at the station or the airport. 😉 6. No, the North Sea is on the west side of the country. Markermeer is like a lake. But made by the Dutch. 😁😁

Hoi Stefan, waarom is op 1:37:04 seinbeeld geel-4 te zien? Ik zou een groen verwachten omdat de maximale snelheid al 40 km/h is. Het is vast iets raars met die 8-borden vlak vóór en na het kruiswissel gok ik zo?

Goed gezien. Dat komt doordat in het blok achter dit sein de snelheid omhoog gaat naar 80km/u. Die mag je opvolgen als het licht groen is. En dan zouden we met 80km/u door een 40-wissel kunnen knallen. 😉 Door geel-4 te tonen gelden aanvullende regels voor verhogen van snelheid.

Nope, na een groen-variant mag je snelheid verhogen bij het passeren van borden met een hogere snelheid. Dus dan kun je met 80km/u door het wissel knallen.

Complimenten voor alweer een goeie video, Meester! Vraagje: slaat je pantograaf niet helemaal uit als je over een brug zonder bovenleiding rijdt? Of staat daar niet zoveel druk op? Ook leuk dat je je fluitje weer meegenomen hebt vandaag.

Ha Marc! Dankjewel voor je compliment. De stroomafnemers van het Nederlandse materieel hebben een zogenaamde stoot die de stroomafnemers op een bepaalde hoogte blokkeert. De draden bij de stroomloze bruggen gaan tot net boven die maximale hoogte zodat de stroomafnemers los komen van de draad en aan de andere kant weer onder de draad schuiven. 😁😁

14:14 - small graveyard comes into view off to the right? How fast do you have to be going before you no longer worry about wheel slip for the SNG on a dry day? 1:34:17 - I notice you watered the platform. What grows there? {^_-} (I gather the SNG window washers are not aimed right....) {^_^}

Thanks for sharing your journeys with us! Could you explain a bit more how the train can pass through those bridges without the overhead wires without breaking its pantograph? My understanding so far has been that the pantograph has to push against the wires to ensure a good contact. If so, what would prevent it from raising up the moment the wires are gone, and slamming into the support structure on the other side of the bridge?

Hi! Yes I absolutely can. The pantographs on Dutch trains have a special blocker. This blocks the pantographs on a maximum Dutch height. At the bridges the wires are raised to a higher point when nearing the bridge so the pantographs loose contact. In the other side the pantographs slide under the wire again and the wire is back at normal height at the next portal. 😁😁

Sterker nog: daar is nog geen ERTMS geïnstalleerd. Alleen Thalys kan hier 160km/u ivm ATB+. 😁😁

dat deuren probleem hed je niet in de jaren 60/70 met de Muizenkop.lol.ze stonden al open dat we het station binnen reden,wie was het eerst uit de trein zonder ongelukje?lol.

Haha, dat is wel heel snel. Maar alle treinen hebben wel eens deurproblemen hoor. Alleen nu zit er zoveel software in die dingen dat het wel vaker misgaat. Maar men blijft optimaliseren bij nieuw materieel. 😁

Hmmmm SNG maakt wel meer herrie dan een SLT hoor. Geen idee waarom, maar nieuwe treinen lijken altijd meer herrie te maken. 😅😅😅
