A cool piece of railroad history. Back in the day before EOTs "End Of Train" devices, defect detectors, & dragging defect detectors, whenever you heard, "the last railcar on the train", a caboose was what you thought of. There aren't many of them used on trains anymore. Evolution of the caboose started out as a spare boxcar with windows cut out on it for the conductor to make it his office & to monitor the train while it was moving. Later in either the late 1890s or very early 1900s, the cupola was made which is that part of the caboose sticking up above the roof top where the conductor & brakeman sat at to see over the railcars for any issues such as overheated axles & load shifting that could happen while the train was moving.

@@TheHiveDrive I sure do miss seeing them on the ends of trains. I do see them in railroad museums which is awesome & they let you get inside some of them & the old passenger railcars they have too.

Those weren't skylights in the caboose. Train crew would sit up there looking for smoking bearings on the train, amongst other things.

Yeah! Love the history of what it was and now how they act as skylights to flood in extra light for the space. So great!!

How did they get the caboose up there anyway 🤔. Thanks for the 'bonus' video, and the promotion of the tiny home. Maybe u will get your own TV show someday visiting and grading tiny homes 😂

Right!? We asked them that very thing! They had to use a crane 5 different times!!! Crazy! Haha that would be awesome! Maybe we can continue to do more on our KZbin too :)
