Those giant paper rolls,were probably Newsprint,that are used in highspeed presses,for newspapers! Those presses are nowadays,rigged for 4 or 5 color outputs,and are generally computer driven! They are as complicated as any locomotive,but usually not seen,by the public! Anyway,a side note,on an NS derailment! Thank you for your attention! Thank you 😇 😊!

Back in the mid 90s a BNSF train had a massive derailment in Stratford, Missouri, right along I44. And it happened to be loaded with mostly playboy magazines. A few car mags but a whole train car off playboy... People stole those like they were starving. A trooper told me they decided to just let people haul of the mess basically. Took about a week and the mags were gone. It was quite the event it was.

@roadmaster720 I never figured out why a guy needed a pickup load. People originally were trying to sell them at work and around. Then they just gave them away. Several claimed they used them to light the wood stove. Back before the internet little things like that were big fun.
@paulkoza86525 күн бұрын
It seems funny to me that magazines would be carried in bulk via rail. Having worked in the paper industry for 8 years, I would think that the magazines would be printed and then shipped in bulk via truck to a distribution center. Rail does not make sense. Now if they were being recycled, that may be a different story.
@tireballastserviceofflorid77715 күн бұрын
@paulkoza8652 Back then there were less printers. And even less printers willing to bring shut mags. You would be surprised at what rolls on rail on schedule.

Wow, I live between Thomaston and Barnesville and this is the first I’ve heard of this. Cater-Parrot trains normally run Tuesday and Thursday so the derailment and/or the holiday must have changed this. The paper may have been for Quad Graphics, a customer CPR serves in The Rock, Georgia.
@tomrogers94677 күн бұрын
Well, that consist certainly wiped out! The customer will not accept a shipment of damaged paper: it will all likely go back to the mill to be recycled. A crappy situation all around! 😂

@ After some consideration I believe I am wrong. Knowing insurance companies, the insurer will write off the cargo and insist it be taken straight to a landfill. They are seldom interested in salvaging anything, other than car or truck wrecks.

Since it looks like these rolls were covered, I'd think they were either magazine paper or newsprint. TP is usually produced at conversion facilities and not shipped in bulk. They could also be kraft paper for a box plant.

@@doxielain2231 I honestly do not know, but if I had to guess from some of the rail that I’ve seen …..it would be missing & loose spikes, along with, poor maintenance . Hate to sound stupid, but what is that orange car with the really long nose thing doing? How does that work?
@tomt95434 күн бұрын
The 2 orange machines are what NS refers to as a “smoothing gang”. The long one with the small orange cart that is pushed some distance ahead of it by a long truss beam is a laser alignment/tamper machine. Lasers are pointed at targets on the small cart from the main machine. Those lasers are used to guide the machine to line the track either straight or in a curve. It lifts the track and itself up, shifts the track left or right, tamps ballast under the ties, and sets it all back down. Then moves forward a bit and repeats. I believe GPS is used to tell the machine exactly where the track is supposed to be. The other machine withe wide end is a ballast regulator. The one end has a V shaped blade on it to begin leveling either ballast disturbed by the tamper or new ballast dumped on the tracks. The wide end has a massive broom under the sheet metal covers. The bristles are massive, thick rubber hoses similar to freight car air hoses, that finish leveling the rock by brushing it even with the top of the ties. Typically shrouded in a dust cloud, if you see one coming (unless you’re deaf, they’ll never sneak up on you!), get as far away from the tracks as you can because they sling ballast fast & everywhere!

@tomt95433 күн бұрын
@@v12productions I forgot to mention that those rolls of paper can weigh as much as 5-7,000 lbs each! More if they get wet. Like a massive steam roller, they’ve been known to do extreme damage after falling out the doorway of boxcars! They tend to be loaded in a zig-zag pattern, and a hard coupling or slack action can shove them to one end of the car, the ones by the doorway being pushed sideways and pushing the door off of the track, sometimes ejecting the roll! There have been derailments that wound up with loaded paper cars in waterways, and the water soaked up by the rolls made the cars impossibly heavy to move, and having to be unloaded in the water in some way or another.
