We did it back in December last year. What a great experience and a good way of. Seeing much of North Island in a short time.

I used to travel by rail from Wellington to Auckland frequently, back in the late 60s and 70s. Loved every minute of it except coming into Auckland. What a hole. Always preferred the trip home.

i used to b an assistant guard on the ratler it was called in those days night train from wellington. was no problen to have 11 or 12 cars on and 250 to 350 people..we were busy most of the night untill change over at just nth of ohakune and start to head home. great fun. never any major problems, now and then a few army boys would b pissed but we would get them picked up at the next station, lol. it was a good job, thoroughly enjoyed myself for about 2 years. im a bit dissapointed that going over the raurimu spiral was not metioned. it was great seeing the engin dissapear around a corner and then turn around to watch tne last cars come around the corner behind you.

Very disappointing about the Raurimu Spiral being missed, especially since the guard used to talk about it when I went on the train some time ago.

If I was showcasing a topic as this, r would do a captioned commentary for places of interest. This would be a great concept to incorporate for all the travellers. Also I would include live footage of tourists who wish to record their personal experience of any rail trips while in NZ. Hey..I just created a new concept of travel...I , think I'll book a flight and head back home to NZ. 😂

Great ideas but the train is not running at the moment and when it comes back in may be in a different form - a two day tourist excursion which includes an overnight stay at somewhere like National Park and a trip into the volcanic plateau. I am sure you can imagine what that will cost. Take a look at my video The Overlander - the service that preceded the Northern Explorer.

I took this phucking train in Jan 2002!! It broke down 1/2 way. Fair play to NZ trains. We got an 1/2 hour free call long distance, so I called my mum.

This is a new train. The one you caught would have been the old Overlander service. This one is the Northern Explorer. Service is suspended at the moment because of the Covid pandemic. It will probably return in a revamped form in mid-2022.

I am sorry, I do not have such information. Maybe if you search Kiwi Rail on Google then their website may come up and there may be vacancies listed there.

you are a kiwi bloke...giving heads up on kiwi rail...but your production of the real...main trunk line, HURTS ME.....THE HEART OF THE KING COUNTRY AND THE BACKBONE OF THE RAIL....WAS...TAUMARUNUI...I know this, as my DAD was an engine driver and also he had a TICKET TO DRIVE THE "SILVER FERN"...ITS RARE to have that honour..but having said that...you bypassed the fact that Taumarunui was a MAJOR stop for many many years prior to the electrification of the lines. Raurimu spiral...is another great feat...yet you again bypassed it... mentioning National Park Station is surreal...but there's more to ...Auckland- Wellington via rail , if you do your homework. just saying.

Thankyou for your comments Debi, much appreciated. You are correct in your observations but coverage of the spiral in its entirety was beyond my technical and financial capabilities. Sad to miss out Taumaranui, a lovely little town, and Te Kuiti too.Maybe I can redress these omissions in some future work. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Interesting that they didn’t bolt a EF locomotive to the front for the Hamilton to Palmerston North section, instead choosing diesel for the entire trip

More views of outside scenery and less of people standing around would of been nice. A bit of commentary of where the train was passing through too. I can walk up the street and see people kissing , no need for it on here.

OK. But that would depend on one's perspective wouldn't it and what one may be looking for? You could be right though. An example of no-budget video making - not made to industrial or corporate standards. Thanks for the comment though. I will take another look at it and see if I can see it from your point of view. Maybe I could start striving toward the 'most improved' category.
