Cheers, I'm sure you'd enjoy New Zealand, attitudes and life in general are lot like England was 30 or 40 years ago, although Health and Safety now prevents the train crew from allowing anyone to film from the cab, which is a bit of a shame, there have been a lot of changes since this video was taken when the trip was all about making sure passengers enjoyed the experience, today its all about Health and Safety along with adhering to rules that are all about the operators convenience and cost cutting, with little or no regard for the passenger experience. On recent trips I've really missed the old fashioned Kiwi friendliness, fortunately some of the older crew who put the passenger first still work on the trains, but increasingly they are being replaced by people who are just doing the job without understanding that for most passengers, riding the train, is the trip of a lifetime. It might seen a little odd, but sometimes I choose to visit former Eastern European countries, rather than New Zealand, simply because Health and Safety is used to make things safer there, rather than used as an excuse for not doing things. The people touring New Zealand have also changed, when I first went, they were mainly Japanese, European, American or Australian, now the vast majority are Chinese and their behaviour on the roads and in the open railway carriages leaves a lot to be desired, they may be part of the reason KiwiRail have tightened up on the rules. If you do go, try to get away from the tourist trail and meet the real Kiwis, they are really nice people, I've tried touring with groups, and hiring campervans, but my favourite touring option is to hire an old car and stay in Air B&B or Backpacker accommodation, that way you get to meet some really interesting characters who remember the country when it was still being tamed.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Thanks for the info and advice! While I can't speak for the railways of New Zealand, I've seen similar things happen here from seats that have no window view and when you try to tell them you've traveling for the journey not the destination you're met with "well that's tough". Then you get more stations with ticket barriers and the staff won't let you on the platform just to see trains. I also agree with you on Eastern Europe, they're so much more relaxed and the language barrier isn't usually a problem when people have common seance and are quite happy to let you have a fooplate ride or walk around a depot.

@@HenrysAdventures Like you, I travel for the journey and I find it frustrating not to have a good view. I don't video much action on the UK mainline these days because there are too many restrictions. My daughter is a signaler at Exmouth Junction and she has to be careful about the photos taken from her signal box that she shares on social media, although she does send me some good videos such as the Loram rail-head grinding train passing her signal box in the dark, it looked like a mobile firework display. She gets the occasional cab ride, but the drivers always ask her not to share any photos she takes. One of the drivers at her local depot has started posting driver's eye views taken all over the Western Region, there are posted to a New Official GWR site, a good idea as it allows us all to enjoy the view.

@@HenrysAdventures It was a good move by GWR. Norwegian Railways once posted an excellent copyright free version of a long distance cab ride to KZbin, being copyright free it was downloaded and used by other KZbin creators as background to music tracks etc. It certainly led to a lot of good quality free advertising, today Hinducowgirl (Railcowgirl) does a great job covering the Flam line in all seasons. I am surprised that rail companies don't make better use of KZbin, either by having their own channels or working with existing channels who have a good track record (no pun intende) 😊

+Colin Wilkie Hi Colin, I traveled on this train in 2005 for the first time, before the new carriages were introduced and I loved that carriage at the back of the train with the massive rear facing window. Back then the train called at more stations and we passed the Overlander travelling in the opposite direction at National Park where we had enough time to get something to eat from the station cafe. The old carriages used on all the Tranzscenic trains reminded me of Gresley carriages used by the LNER in Britain. Whilst the old carriages were comfortable and modern inside, they were beginning to look a bit worn and dated on the outside. I was delighted to see the introduction of the new carriages as it indicated KiwiRail were serious about these trains and for the time being their future was safeguarded.

Hi Julian. I have just checked the Kiwirailscenic website for fares. A one way ticket will cost between NZ$ 129 & NZ$ 198 (£67 - £103). The train leaves Auckland at 7.50am arriving Wellington 6.25pm, as you can see it is a long day. The plane is more convenient if you just want to get from A to B, but I always consider the train ride as part of my holiday, after all if its central North Island you want to see, what better way to see it. In summer the whole trip is in daylight, not so in winter

Passenger rail in 2014 is nothing like it was was 30-years ago. The NZ government did not support the passenger services, allowing them to atrophy as air travel took hold. The overnight service in 1980, ex Auckland to Wellington, offered sit-ups, sleepers and a diner. The 'Silver Fern', the daylight service, was commercially viable, but again nothing was done to market it to overseas visitors. [If you are considering any negative responses to this comment, look elsewhere. I worked in the airline industry for 20-years, with time-out between 1972-74 in the marketing department at Amtrak. I know whereof I speak.}

I couldn't agree more with your comments. I believe it is a disgrace how successive governments have totally failed to improve overseas tourist passenger train services in New Zealand. While sure there may be a few who take the journeys, that is merely a tokenism gesture. New Zealand has some of the best scenery in the world accessible via passenger train and yet it remains mainly unseen from overseas tourists. They should be flowing in to New Zealand and such passenger trains should be fully booked throughout the year. Yet New Zealand merely seems to meander our way via tourism and especially passenger train journeys. Infra-structure yet again - a complete lack of. Why? Vision-less and gutless successive governments. Nowadays governments only govern so that they can stay in power reaping all of hard taxpayers money and perks for themselves. Rather they should govern on their policies and remain totally committed to serving all New Zealanders. But once the 'tow-the-party-line' policy is enacted, a politician cannot speak out against the party's policies if they are not functioning and rather they are destroying the community that the politician represents. Joke! Centralization does NOT empower local body administration. It destroys it. Less government/governing is MORE! Allow the locals to administrate and control their communities because they KNOW HOW to. There should be a passenger train service running the entire length of New Zealand - North to South so overseas tourists get to experience our beautiful nation at hand with the locals. Almost every other country in the Commonwealth at least has a similar service. Train travel is UNIQUE - there is NOTHING like it. Just as cruising on a passenger ship is too - my wife and I are fortunate enough to have experienced both - and I am a complete left leg amputee. My life consists of finding out ways of HOW to DO something. I try not to let any negative thing get in the way - and there has been a large number of them unfortunately. Sometimes yes probably my making. However my wife and I try to make the correct decisions. Our philosophy is to MAKE THE DECISION and if its great - so be it - if it isn't - well at least we made a decision and we will learn from it. The key thing is we made the decision. We bit the bullet. Kiwis somehow these days just only procrastinate and become part of the 'paralysis-by-analysis' brigade. Find ways of making what you need happen! I have been pushed back in my life far further than I have progressed. However difficult life becomes, I always see the light at end of the tunnel - no matter how dim or bright it is. Faith. Got to believe in something. 'If a man has not discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live' - Martin Luther King, Jr. Come on New Zealand let's invest in passenger train travel again. Restore the unique experience. And live as we should.

Most of the trip was taken from the Northern Explorer, but some of the shots looking forward between Wellington and Waikanae were taken from a local train I travelled on the day before, hence the blue sky, not cloudy as on most of the trip. The part with the steam locomotive was just added for interest. The new train is a credit to Kiwi Rail serving the tourist market well, but it must be frustrating for locals who's stations it no longer calls at.

Is it only me that finds it odd that the derails protecting the main line end abruptly in disaster, one goes into a pile of gravel that would send the train over the side and onto the rocky coast below, and another would send the train crashing thru someone's back yard and house.

It is an interesting observation, there is a set of catch points at my local station in England. In the last 25 years they have stopped 2 trains, on each occasion the train has stopped quickly after derailing (less than the length of one carriage) and a far worse scenario has been avoided. I assume catch points are intended for low speed incidents. I think on today's modern railway where trains are continuously braked with safety systems built in should a train split, or pass a signal at danger catch points are largely redundant. In the past when loose coupled freight trains were common, catch points would have preformed an important function in the event of a train splitting.

Hi, on this trip, I asked the train manager, who kindly contacted the driver to ask If it was OK. Fortunately he was happy to let me travel up front for while. I rarely ride with the driver as the job requires their full concentration, but some drivers are OK with a small GoPro camera fixed to window on the second mans side of the cab. There is an increasing burden of regulation driver's have to adhere to, so it is getting more difficult to obtain permission and in many countries their are a number of private organisations responsible for running the trains, making it harder to find the right person to ask. New Zealand drivers get to see some of the best views to be had anywhere in the world and I really appreciate their help in obtaining forward facing views, enabling all of us to enjoy the spectacular scenery from the driver's cab.

There are not many railways in New Zealand, but those that there are all pretty spectacular. The Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine on South Island and both worth doing as is the Northern Explorer on North Island. Check the timetables as these trains do not all run daily and the Coastal Pacific is seasonal. Two shorter rides I always enjoy are on the Wellington commuter network - Wellington to Paekakariki to visit Steam Incorporated (Check out their website) and Wellington to Johnsonville (just a rather quirky line). You might also consider the line to Masterton. There is a spectacular line at Dunedin called the Taieri Gorge Railway. Ferrymead Heritage Park near Christchurch is worth visiting (check their website for running days). If you fancy something different there are railcarts at Rotorua and Forgotten World - Rotorua is the easiest to do as it does not need to booked in advance, but it may be advisable. For the forgotten World, check out their website. There are some Heritage lines, Glenbrook near Auckland is a good place to experience New Zealand Steam and it is always worth keeping an eye on the Steam Incorporated website to see if they are running any specials. I live in England, but it is easy to book most of these activities from the UK. If you like cars or trams their are good museums near Wellington. I hope your visit goes well, most of these activities are covered on this channel, type "New Zealand" where the search symbol appears to find them.

wow being an American this is nice to me. What is the fare for this ride from Auckland to Wellington these days and how long does it take a standard route train to get to the Capital.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 8 жыл бұрын
+Martin Theiss Hi, the fare is 179 NZ Dollars, approximately 118 US Dollars and the journey takes a little over 10 hours. If you want to get from A to B the plane is much cheaper, but if its the experience only the Northern Explorer can offer, then the train fare is good value .... there is no better way to see New Zealand.

Oh yes you are right if this is just a 118 US dollar ticket for a 10 hour ride as long as the seats can be used as napping or relaxing areas (is there a diner car?). This is getting better and better by the day

+Martin Theiss Hi, the train is comfortable with a cafe style carriage serving snacks and beverages throughout the trip, the on board staff are friendly and very helpful. Here is a link to KiwiRail Scenic trains for more information ..... www.kiwirailscenic.co.nz/northern-explorer/?gclid=CK7R457wgMsCFXEz0wodRroI3Q

Café carriage with snacks and beverages. Ok. Can we at least get a lunch hot dog or a salad so we are not raging hungry as we are being pushed off in Wellington?

+Martin Theiss Hi Martin, there is no need to go hungry as there is a choice of hot and cold food ... click on the link to see the menu ... www.kiwirailscenic.co.nz/on-board/food-and-drink/

Be nice if the camera was not curved a normal picture.

I used an early GoPro Hero 2 for much of this video, a curved horizon was the only option, GoPro's have come on a lot since then, offering a variety of picture options, including almost normal.

Excellent train video! Lucky to get in the cab and back part of the train. You cam mounted at the front of the train? I subbed, sub back? How many hrs to Auckland?

TrainAutovideos Cheers, I was lucky on this trip, some of the driving cab views were taken with a GoPro camera attached the inside of the window. The scenic trains in New Zealand have an open carriage in the train, great for shooting video and photos. I took a look at your channel and subbed, I look forward to watching some of your footage taken in Sydney. The trip from Auckland to Wellington takes just under 11 hours.
