I had an instance where I was at a campground close to railroad tracks. It was the middle of the night and a Union Pacific came through. I fell asleep shortly after. I also stayed in a hotel for a few days close to a railroad crossing where both, Coaster, Amtrak and BNSF pass through and had no issue. People whine too much.

It doesn't even phase me. I have one track outside my window and the train goes by 4 times per day, about 8 hours apart. If I'm sleeping, it never wakes me up unless I'm already about to wake up.

Theres nothing wrong with railroad quiet zones, people have a right to quiet when theyre trying to sleep. Housing can be hard to find and maybe the housing by the tracks is the only housing available. Im a truck driver and if i have to adhere to a "no jake brake" sign because of a noise ordinance, even though the jake brake helps stop the truck, why shouldn't trains have to follow a similar ordinance with the horn. As long as the tracks are walled off there's nothing unsafe about a quiet zone and anyone hit and killed in them, its their own fault!

Yessir. When I was working at an amusement park for 2 seasons consecutively, I drove a CPHunnungton(which is a cheap Ford i6 powered Climax Knockoff that replaced the counterweight wheel with a full locomotive wheel. It runs on 2 1/4 ft gauge track). My boss was particular about how to blow the whistle, which is a Lunkenheimer 200 series. He preferred it to be done quietly, if at all. But I preferred to blow it the regular 4 times that the FRA requires of actual standard gauge revenue railroads. It added to the experience. We had three level crossings and two stations. I would blow 3 long 1 short at the crossings, and 2 medium approaching either station platform. My boss and I got along great, but we tended to be at odds about that. Never got any complaints about noise from guests, but he just preferred the 120db whistle be blown quietly. Hindsight being 20/20, I could’ve backed off a bit, but it was a dream come true operating my own train. Alas, when management was changed for no reason, and my new boss started running the park into the ground, myself, along with essentially half the park staff, began quitting. We were being mistreated by the new manager and her cronies, and that didn’t sit well. Last I heard, the park can’t operate more than a few total rides, and with the other train operator being 80 and retired, and me no longer being there, I heard that the Hunnington is just sitting in the main station and not being moved. Sad. But, happy side to this is that I got to drive my own train for two seasons and it was a very fun experience, despite some obvious misgivings.

It’s happening as many people have been killed as they were not eligible to hear the horns and were killed walking, and driving. That’s why conductors shall reserve their right to blow horns, regardless of what it may cause. If you cannot sleep, then you may always get earplugs. If you can still hear it then there is technology to block out the sound from your ears.

The complete disregard for public safety that people must have to vote in favor of quiet zones is appalling. People run crossing gates with even the most keen K5LA at 150db, when there’s no warning other than the gates, inattentive people may walk, ride, or drive right through the gates. There is no excuse for violating not only FRA regulations, but for also violating others right to safety.

This is why zoning is a waste of resources. Why are areas around train tracks zoned for residential use and why do people decide to buy or rent housing there? Realtors control most zoning boards and they use zoning to manipulate the market and develop property controlled by their families and friends into the most profitable zoning catergory. The main problem is once an area becomes a slum, a developer can't buy it and clear it to use it for another purpose.
