Pretty neat video... I find myself referring to the TM website though, to find out where you are at each point. If you did this again, might I suggest some subtitles to say where you are (sidings, points etc)? Also, some insulation between the camera and the loco body might help too. I love Electric Motor noise, but sometimes its abit overpowering :) I'd love to visit TM one day, its definitely on the bucket list! Hopefully have afew less derailments than you did, and explore pieces of track that you didn't get to film on this... Certainly a blumin' big area.

This is why I want to visit this place so badly because this is the granddaddy of all live steam railroading. Thanks for posting this awesome video tour of the railroad

That is one long train ride. I would like to know how long it took them to lay all of that track.

I would have liked to see the train and wheel assemblies.. Did that green box that was left at 1:50:30 +-::30 fall off accidentally?
@KmanAuto
@KmanAuto 7 жыл бұрын
The wheel assemblies of my Locomotive? I will record one when I do my spring tune up. My loco is very simple electric box cab. The green blocks are to note locations where I (Or others) have had a derailment. Most derailments are just a fluke, however, if enough people derail in the same location, that section of track is inspected much more closely, to see if there is a under lying issue.

If you don't mind me asking, what camera do you use to shoot video. Is it a GoPro type portable? I am finding that most compact cameras like a GoPro you're lucky to get 2 hours out of them.

I have two regular camcorders. I don't care much for gopro style cameras, too limited. My main ins a Sony FDR-AX33. 4k UltraHD Camcorder. That one records at 100mbit, optical stabilization, and can fill a 64gig memory card in 1 hr 15 minutes. My second, older one is a Sony HDR-PJ380. 1080p 60fps with built in LCD projector. records at 25mbit, not too shabby, and can get about 5 hrs on a 64gig card and one battery charge. that is the one I used for this video. And for thermal, I used my FlirONE.

KZbin must hate you :) Trains aside, there seems to be a lot of hills and forest where you go, I was wondering, have you ever heard local talk of sasquatch? ever heard of sightings? It's something I have recenty become aware of and surprisingly it seems we actually do have a yet undiscovered huge bipedal primate populating vast forest areas, in surprisingly close proximity to human civilization in some cases. And sometimes they even seem to snatch people.

Dan Frederiksen It's Oregon. Home to many o Squatches. I live on the coast and not far from a former purpose built, lumber- mill town that is now gone since 1984 when it was demolished, in the coast mountain range, with plenty of stories of encounters there and photos of habitat structures. They had a busy railroad line that ran up there that is also gone. I think the tv show Finding Bigfoot is absolutely retarded. Aside from Big Farce, this was a great video.

a hell of a lot of derailments, suggests there is more track than can be sensibly maintained :(

+Jeff Symons Yes, excessive derailments when we were at TM. I had 12 before I even left the station yard. At least my Loco is easily managed with one person. The aluminum track was VERY worn. But given that it was 30 years old, understandable. Aluminum is good for smaller clubs, but TM is massive. The days following our visit, they had a Work Week before the Triennial. They replaced TONS of the aluminum with Steel. I had no problems with the Steel Track they already had up, it was only the Aluminum. The steel track should be a permanent fix. Should take 100 years to wear that out.

+Jeff Symons Just thought I would add, I drove my train around TM during the Trienniel for 3 days of constant running, many hours of travel time on the tracks and I had only 2 derailments on my freight car. Could be a variety of factors that caused this fellow to derail so many times, weight distribution on the cars, moving around while the train is moving, equipment issues, or ??? For the size of this place it is very well maintained.

+jsarkozy We were at TM the a little over a week before the trienniel. The week before the event, or in other words, a few days after we left, they did a major overhaul of the lines, replacing tons of the old, Heavially worn aluminum rail with brand new steal rail. I had little to no issues with the steel rail, all the derailments I had were on the old aluminum rail.
@jsarkozy

+KmanAuto that makes sense, I think the plan is to replace all the old aluminum track if they have done so already.

As of my return visit in 2016, I had probably a total of 10 derailments in a 2 week span that we camped out in our teardrop at TM. What a MASSIVE difference on the new Steel Rail. Not all was replaced though, some sections, on curves, instead of replacing all the rail, they replaced just the outer rail (The rail the flange would interact with more so). This seems to have been a sensible compromise, but if your going to do it why not it all. Either way, it was impressive improvement, and the new lines they are running up in the mountain were very nice! Cant wait to take a ride on them this year!

+Steel PC Gaming yep, they replaced a great deal with Steel the week after we left (It was a work week). We wanted to help out while we were there, but no one would give us a straight answer what to do.

All that aluminum track laying out there waiting for someone to come along & pick it up & sell it for scrap. Thousands of dollars just laying there! If they leave it out there, it is not needed!
@jamesmiller5939

+Cockroach All of the aluminum track that is replaced is used in other areas or sold by Train Mountain. It is not left for anyone to just go pick it up, that would be stealing from Train Mountain.

+James Miller It is just out there, left unguarded & available. If someone needs CASH, this is the place to go! Financially desperate people could probably find enough to make some life changing purchases. Lift it up, cut it off, load it & haul it awayI It is all just laying there. like someone dropped their wallet. It could be a life changing boost for the financially desperate people. Far better than financing people with their expensive toys! All there just waiting for the right people to help themselves to the spoils!
