At 6:10 and 29:40 there are clear views of the side of the Erie Triplex. Awesome work of art! Thanks for sharing!

Another Triplex was built by Baldwin: Virginian Ry. #700 2-8-8-8-4. It was unsuccessful, having insufficient grate area to push at over 5 mph. Its power would drop before its help was not needed. It was returned to Baldwin, where it was broken up into a 2-8-8-0 (later 2-8-8-2) and a 2-8-2. Its tender body was mounted on ordinary tender trucks. The 700’s problem might have been fixed if the exhaust from the tender engine, which cylinders were under the cab, had been piped to the smokebox to increase draft. As the locomotive was run compound, the exhaust from one rear engine cylinder being piped to the front engine and the other to the tender engine, the flaw in the design is easy to see. The limit on draft is when the firebed is lifted off of the grates and sucked through the tubes and out of the stack.

Does the model suffer from the same issues as the original with running out of steam?
@jefflynnalex7 жыл бұрын
Look at the video closely. It shows a Northern Pacific 2-8-8-4 backing into a train but the rest of the video is of the 2-8-8-8-2 from behind pulling a different train. There is no point in the video where you can see the side of the triplex... The only side shot is of the other loco; the 2-8-8-4. Definitely confusing. There are other videos showing both locos so you can see the triplex in one of those.

at 6:34 that is the Erie triplex it has 8 extra drivers on the tender ,look at the drink bottle behind the seat and the box car with the two open flats, then at 7:14 the drink bottle and open flap box car are being filmed .

Are all sets of cylinders powered are is the back pain a dummy because the the real triplex had the problem of running out of steam because all those sets of cylinders used so much steam it would actually run out of steam in real life
@lazarusmagellan23674 жыл бұрын
He may have decreased the bore to be less than scale
@lazarusmagellan23674 жыл бұрын
Another option is compounding. Make all the cylinders look the same but really be double expansion compound. The middle set of cylinders will be a bigger bore than all of the others (proportionally to get the right ratio). Then the middle driver left cylinder feeds the front two, and the middle right cylinder feeds the rear two. This was how g scale live steam triplexes worked.

09/29/19. I met Larry back at the Triennial 2003. I'd asked him why he didn't go down the hi and he sad because the Boiler couldn't produce enough steam to take care of 6 steam chest's. Said he was going to disconnect the rear. So seeing him going down the hill I guess that's what he did.

Ah, so the locomotive has accurate issues! That’s pretty awesome despite being technically terrible. 😂
@bluefoxy64785 жыл бұрын
Maybe with some clever engineering it could work, after all, a lot of things had kinks in the beginning, but were ironed out.
@philipasanchez54455 жыл бұрын
No. That issue was taken care of back in 2000-03. There's no longer A "Technical Problem" 2000 Larry couldn't take it off the hill. Now He can.. ""Technical Problem"". It's Not A Damn Computer
