Not just the sound but the feeling when your train comes apart is something that you remember! Pulling hard and suddenly the whole train lurches forward followed by the air dumping.

Was on an Amtrak train and heard the same sound. You won't be able get the smell of it though. We were informed over the loudspeaker someone had approached the train track too closely. That person was okay but we had to wait for the auto train to be checked before we could resume moving.

Why doesn't the momentum carry the separated section forward into the stopping main section? Is there an emergency brake that goes off in the separated section as well?
@christopherlong2301
@christopherlong2301 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. All the air gets dumped and the train comes to a complete stop. If not, the rear section could start to roll backwards if on a grade.
@MakeItSo-ThisIsME
@MakeItSo-ThisIsME 3 жыл бұрын
So if its either an EOT (End Of Train) Device or DPU, emergency air brakes are applied to every car, basically stopping them from going any further. A little momentum is still there as due to speed and velocity; once the friction of the wheel to rail is equal, the cars stop. Since the backend that separated only had so many cars, it stopped relatively soon after the EM brakes were applied.
@stephendisalvo1341
@stephendisalvo1341 3 жыл бұрын
Air keeps the brakes shoes off the wheels, their default resting position is applied. So when the hose parted the air escaped from both segments and the brakes no longer had air keeping them off the wheels, and the segments stop.
@royreynolds108
@royreynolds108 3 жыл бұрын
@@stephendisalvo1341 No, there is a reservoir on each car that provides the air to the brake cylinder. The air brakes on a train charge the train line to 90psi (freight) which fills the reservoir and releases the brakes by dumping the cylinder which is opposite truck air brakes. The valve on each car that controls this is called a triple valve and it does it by variations in pressure between the air line and reservoir on each car.

I remember MR published a test of KD vs the other plastic couplers. The Brand X couplers were breaking at few pound test weight. When they tested the KD, they maxed their scale before it broke. If I remember correctly the scale went to 15 lbs, and they were well past that in weight before the knuckle broke.

Interesting the engineer must have cut out the DPU on the hind end before backing up. Had he not, both sections of the train would have reversed I imagine. I had this happen to me while in train service once. High mounds of snow caught a cut lever, parted the train, front of the train stopped faster than the rear and we ended up against the bulkhead when the hind end crashed into the front part of the train.

Whenever a DP is separated from the head end it is put in set out mode so it will not respond until it is put back to normal and detects air from the head end.

@aaplies8879

Coupler separated, cars left behind stop slower bcse of inertia, pulling the air hose apart. I watched this live and it was my first train of the day. On radio they discussed things about the knuckle and informed the dispatcher about the incident. Nothing was broken so they backed the train up. "it's like the pin was pulled out" -conductor
@VerilyVerbatim
@VerilyVerbatim 3 жыл бұрын
And yet, even with the automatic systems kicking in, it still took over 2,300 feet for the first train to come to a complete stop (44 wagons, 53ft per wagon) after the airhose noise. This is why there are so many warnings about not trying to beat the train at crossings. It might look slow on the approach, but there is absolutely no way that trains like this can possibly stop for you.

Thus disproving the myth that it takes a long, loaded train a mile to stop. It only took about 0.4 miles to stop. Also, at 5:00, we see something that was testified about in the April, 2022 STB hearings. Those handheld radios were not meant to transmit over the distances now taken up by the longer trains being run under PSR. The conductor is desperately trying to increase the talk range by holding the unit as high as possible.

Always amazed to see how many trains "separate" in the US while travelling ! First I think that the maintenance of the "cars" might be overall limited, second my feeling is that the fret trains are generally too heavy thus imposing huge constraints on the couplers, last, I wonder whether the existence of automatic coupling may not generate some weaknesses related to hard coupling events that do not exist with manual couplers.
