I use to travel daily between Grantham & Newark going to and from work in the 70's. The line on the left at Newark joined the the Nottingham-Grantham line at Bottesford west of the village. When going home in the early evening I only ever saw Oil trains coming from the line, there were no passenger trains on it.

Brilliant, my old stomping ground while I grew up, loved the route through Selby, now the A19 Road North of Selby at Barlby, often think of my travels down that section of track in those days, when I drive the car on that section of road. In another Rail video, I've seen many years ago, the short tunnel before Retford, the narrator said the drivers in steam days use to change at that point on express trains for Kings Cross - Newcastle services.

The train line which joins the east coast line just before Newark Northgate is an old Victorian line which leads to Bottesford, leicestershire

the last trains to run on that line where class 60's hauling tank trains, gypsum trains also used to run along the line between Newark and staunton/gypsum works. These trains where hauled from the gypsum works to newark sidings a shunter. The shunter at Newark also used to collect trains from Newark sugar factory to Newark sidings where class 31's or 37's would collect the trains. part of the line has been turned into a cycling track and run to cotham bridge. www.philt.org.uk/BR/Shunter/i-wgDJKfd

Peter, an absolutely first rate video, especially with your comments and personal tidbits. For me, it was a more interesting driver's experience than the 380 to North Berwick which seemed like look down a tube at the track with not much to do. Most of the modern corridor electric units are somewhat like that. Many thanks, Roger Crick

Hello Pete. I too am originally from Lincoln. I am hoping that someday a Lincoln area route scenario can be produced. Lincoln to Sheffield, Cleethorpes, Sleaford, Doncaster and Nottingham etc. However in response to what you were asking. On the left was a line approaching Newark Northgate Station. This came from the Grantham to Nottingham line at Bottesford. This line was closed in 1988. Hope this helps.
@PTGRail9 жыл бұрын
David Reid I would love to be able to drive to Lincoln in Train Simulator, so I hope that a route through Lincoln will be made. Thanks for the information, I wondered what that line was as I don't ever remember seeing it there. My first time on Newark station was probably going on holiday in 1990 when I was 3 lol xD

You'll notice that the sides of Mk4 coaches, which were designed for use with the Class 91 are tapered to facilitate tilting.
@PTGRail8 жыл бұрын
Indeed, they were built with a slight slant to allow for a tilting mechanism to be installed. Alas, no tilting mechanism ever was installed in the end.

Excellent simulation, I love the Deltics especially when they ruled the ecml during the early seventies and the class 47-400s sometimes deputising for them. I model based on the ecml, however one could spend hundreds of pounds or even thousands and never get the realism of driving a train like this sim. Is the scenery based on generic scenery prodeced by the sim or is it actual terrain like some flight sims also how muvh of an invested in software To say create a fully working timetable (with all traffic slow & fast lines) with trains preceeding you and behind you like on the real system. Can the whole ecml be created from Kings X to Edinburgh for instance. I used to have the orig microsoft train sim was pretty basic no representstion of real track but vould download lots of locos and coaches etc but if I recall was only limited to the Settle Carisle line for the UK. Cheers

The last time I passed through Doncaster by rail the coach that I was in was evacuated because there was a small fire in a waste bin in the end vestibule. The fire was extinguished by the time we pulled in to Doncaster but the carriage filled with smoke. Interestingly there were a couple of passengers who were reluctant to move.
@newforestroadwarrior6 жыл бұрын
You would be surprised how often that happens. I used to be a fire warden at a company in Scotland and the alarm sounded one afternoon due to a defective sensor. No-one in the building evacuated: one of the building's tenants had a team leader who rang their management team (in an adjacent building) and was told to keep working as it was "either a drill or a fault."
@lukelanglais74719 жыл бұрын
excellent video! i was wondering why you never do any steam loco videos.
@PTGRail9 жыл бұрын
Luke Langlais That's a good question. The simple answer is that half the steam locos don't have a speedometer, and most of those that do require you to look outside to be able to see.. but they you can't see the speedometer. I can't drive without the HUD if I can't see how fast I'm going. I have considered doing a video in the Black 5 at some point, as I can actually see from the cab and there is a speedometer there too. But then the other issue is balancing steam generation and usage so as to not lose too much pressure. That's very difficult without the HUD I find.

It's just occurred to me, between the recent-ish RSC London-Peterborough route, this Peterborough-York route, the stock York-Newcastle route, and JustTrains' Newcastle-Edinburgh route, it's now possible for one to drive the entire East Coast Main Line. I wonder what that would be like for an epic journey. Might have to try it sometime.

PTGRail Is there not a work around? Are we tied to the Steam monolith for all that Train simulator can provide for our entertainment. How about approaching Creative Rail? They may add it to their web site as free download section. As a result of this video I purchased the route. If it was pointed out the service you provided they surely would be interested attracting further purchases if a proper scenario was available too.

lee the terminator Indeed some are preserved, but they were taken out of service before their time. I think by the mid 80s they were all out of service after just 20 years, having been replaced by the HSTs. A couple of years ago they brought one back in to service, hired from its private owner by GBRF for use on freight in Scotland! It's also been used on some ECS moves.

No, I found that a very dull and uninspiring route/scenario although the scenery was great. This route/scenario would be much better suited to one of your Q&A videos, as so little happens in the driver's cab, the stops are few and the land is as flat as a tack.
