In this next route learning video we take a journey along the new Western Mainlines add on from Just Trains between Cardiff Central. At over 145 miles this is the longest journey I've yet undertaken for a video on this channel. Our traction for the journey is a First Great Western HST, and along the way we will be calling at Newport, Bristol Parkway, Swindon, Didcot Parkway, Reading, and London Paddington.
Apologies for the quite serious lag at certain points on this video, it's unfortunately completely unavoidable. Also apologies for saying "Hullavington" where I should have said "Wootton Bassett"; and finally apologies for my slightly croaky sounding voice! My voice was a bit strained when recording but I'm not exactly sure why.

Thanks. I worked over these routes for 40 years and the stations were still in use when I moved down here in 1963. We also worked the daily goods train between Didcot and Swindon known as the 'Swindon Fly', which usually had a Hall engine on it. Once the stations closed the route to Swindon became a very empty right of way, as did both routes to Bristol and Cardiff. Made even worse once the MAS signalling came in and all the signal boxes closed and demolished. The stations between Swindon and Bristol Parkway, which was known as Stoke Gifford before the station was built, were Wooton Bassett, Brinkworth, Little Somerford (For the Malmsbury Branch), Hullavington, Badminton Chipping Sudbury, Westerleigh Junction, Coalpit Heath and Winterbourne.

This of course part of the South Wales main line to and from Swansea and Cardiff Central I believe has electrified. The HST as you know for many, many years had delivered thousands and thousands of passengers and have been replaced by newer units, all green with a bit of yellow at the front.

The stations between Swindon and Didcot were, Stratton St. Margarate, Shrivenham, Uffington (For Faringdon Branch), Challow, Wantage Road and Steventon. Wantage Road had a light railway too and from Wantage Road station. There was a local service between Didcot and Swindon up until 1964/5.

There are several closed stations; Badminton, Hullavington, Wootton Bassett, Uffington, Wantage Road and Challow. Incidentally the Main Line platforms of intermediate stations are used, during late evenings and at ŵeekends when the Reliefs are closed for engineering work. When not in use, the ML platforms are locked out of use behind closed fencing. Pangbourne, Burnham and Taplow are served by connecting buses from intermediate stations as their ML platforms are out of use, whilst Hanwell, West Ealing and Acton ML are not served at all during such times (likewise the Greenford branch is suspended.)

This route some what similar in length where I'm from Chicago, Illinois (USA). We have an interurban electric rail service from South Bend International Airport, Indiana to Chicago Dearborn/Millennium Station, a distance of 109 miles. This train takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. I wish Train Simulator had this route available. The South Shore rail line has been around since 1920 or so, and is now controlled by NICTD (Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District). They currently use single and bi-level powered coaches. I certainly enjoy your train videos.

Great video - thank you. I believe the 2 part speed board refers to the limit for HSTs and that for 'normal' locomotive hauled trains or other DMUs. Sometimes the upper figure will be HST 125 whilst the lower may be 95.

Another great video, Peter, and obviously a huge effort required. When the 165s and 166s arrived, the 165s were intended for journeys between Paddington and Reading (plus branches) and the 166s for longer trips beyond Reading but, from observation, they have become interchangeable and some trains have one of each. You have mentioned doing more videos on this route, so may I say that the station between Hayes and Hanwell is pronounced South_all as in north and south. I was born in Hanwell. Many thanks, Roger Crick.

+Roger Crick Thanks Roger, I always appreciate your comments. I've never been a fan of the 165s and 166s, preferring the older stock they were built to replace. Thanks for the correction on the pronunciation, I've never been quite sure on how to pronounce Southall.

Thanks for another good video. I thought you may like to know that the reason the HST accelerates so slowly from 100mph is due to the lack of field diversions. It's been a long time since I did my driver training but I will try to explain. Field diversions are used to clear Back EMF. Back EMF is the electrical current that the traction motors create while they are turning. Because this current has nowhere to go it tries to force it's self back up the supply line towards the generator. This restricts the flow of electricity to the traction motors and therefore acceleration. Older locomotives for example a Class 47 use a system of field diversions . These simply cut the power along to the supply line and divert the current from the traction motors to banks of resisters which then dissipate the electricity as heat. A class 47 field diverts three times when accelerating to 95mph. I hope this makes sense. J.
@PTGRail
@PTGRail 8 жыл бұрын
+jock678 Thanks for the information there. I had noticed the lack of field diverts which you notice in other locos such as the Class 37, 47 and 55. The acceleration is certainly very sluggish in the HST!

+PTGRail My pleasure glad to be of help. IRL An HST departing Paddington will normally reach 100mph by Acton Mainline then but doesn't hit top speed until somewhere near West Drayton. I forgot to mention that the speed limit is 25mph from the last signal then 15mph from the top of the platform to the stop blocks.

Sorry if you think that I am being pedantic, but amps are the SI unit of current not power for which the SI unit is the Watt. The engineer inside me cringes when these terms are misused. So the ammeter measures the amount of current flowing through the electrical system at any instant.

Fellow Newport resident here! The Usk flows into the Severn estuary, which has the highest tidal range in Europe (and second in the world only to one in Canada I think?), and the Usk is obviously affected by that. In fact, Newport apparently has the highest tidal range of any riverside city in the world! Entertaining other bit of local knowledge; that bridge around 16:51 is actually two bridges, one for each carriageway, and *one* of them didn't have the clearance for OLE (the video makes this pretty clear, actually!). It was demolished over Christmas 2015 and rebuilt in early 2016, along with a new junction linking with the new housing development on the former Monmouthshire Bank sidings to the right of the line in this video.

A change since you ran this scenario. The Greenford shuttle no longer goes to Paddington. It terminates at a newly built bay platform at West Ealing. Passengers have to do an across the platform change to get a train that stops at West Ealing to go further to Paddington. I think the only exception might be trains on the Chiltern line being diverted to Paddington if London Marlybone station is closed. I think it has to do with construction of the Crossrail line.

Great video as always, shame about the lag! The models look impressive though I have to say I'm not keen on all those cloned trees. A few points, the speed limit drop to 120 between Didcot and Reading isn't right and is a legacy from the old GW route. Also the junction you passed before you go into Swindon at Wooton Basset is where the infamous 'Tangmere' incident happened where a steam special stalled over the junction. You'll often find the Cross Country services using the relief lines rather than the main, this is down to pathing at both Reading and Didcot.

I don't think the lag just has to do with the length of the route. I had some odd lag while traveling on Cajon Pass, the original TS route in California. Dropped quality output to Medium and it went away except for a serious bout near San Bernardino entering the yard. I'm told my computer might have been doing something there, so I'll find out on a future run. I'm wondering if the game just had way too much to load at one time on that scenario sitting idle in the yard.

Hi, Just with regard to your request for closed stations between Swindon and Didcot Parkway, I think you may find Uffington is the closed station you refer to. As a Swindon resident, with family in Uffington and a daily commuter from Swindon to Reading via train I do have a better than average knowledge of this route...by all means don't take this for granted as the scenery is so indescriminate around this area my calculations may be out, but Uffington Staition was certainly around this area. Firstly your videos are amazing!!! I've just installed Train Simulator and the braking is very difficult, is there a way to set up the braking to steps rather than the percentage thing??? Can't cope with that, I played an underground sim which had steps controlling all the speed, so is there a way of getting that on this? Again videos are amazing man thank you!
@PTGRail
@PTGRail 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I really appreciate it! Braking is indeed the biggest challenge when it comes to driving trains, and different trains handle differently. Many trains already have steps on the braking, and you need to ignore the percentage written on the HUD. But that's not the case for all trains. With the HST in this video, it's a 6-step brake if I remember correctly. You simply need to count the steps as you put the brake on. :)

Problem is, this is a quality toute with tonnes of time and effort put into it by Just Trains to show us what this game engine can achieve when put to the test. Unfortunately, the engine is so badly optimised that now the routes are actually better than the engine running it and that is something that does need to be changed this year by DTG.

Actually Leo, the creator spammed 3d trees everywhere which is the main issue.

Must have taken ages to put together, great work! May I suggest that if you do a return trip, you do it early - mid 1990s? Would be very nice to see the HST in proper Intercity Swallow livery as well as of course being able to use the Valenta soundpack! As a bonus, NSE and loco hauled AI would also add to it.

+simonmd2000 That's just what I'm planning to do with the Paddington to Bristol video. I'm going to cover it in an Intercity HST. I'm also considering using a reskinned Class 180 for a video on this route too. :)

+70humdinger I can't say when as I don't know, but I do know they are building a brand new train simulator from the ground up which will be based in the Unreal Engine. It will make a vast difference as the engine will allow for much better optimisation along with much improved visuals :)

how to add more train and track ??
@hexagon7895
@hexagon7895 8 жыл бұрын
Great video, just a shame the route is so full of lag. You are correct that the speed limit is 75mph in both directions through the Severn Tunnel, so the route creators have made a mistake there. The of line between Cardiff and Newport is not 95mph on the Main lines but rather 75, HST 95. So not all passenger trains can run at 95mph, HSTs, and some Multiple Units can. I assume that the reason the speed board reads 75 over 95 is that HST differential speed boards aren't available in Train Simulator. The stretch of track between Cardiff and Newport is actually the second fastest in all of Wales. Other than a brief 90, HST 100 between Swansea and Cardiff it's predominantly 90mph on most InterCity routes in Wales. I think the FGW HST that comes with the Riviera line has quicker releasing brakes. And finally, May I just complement on your train handling: I felt your braking was spot on, bringing the train down to a nice smooth stop at stations and your powering up was also much improved. Cross-country seem to be quite rough with starting away from stations in their HSTs, suggesting use of full power to soon. I believe FEW drivers are instructed to not use above Notch 4 power when starting away from stations until the train has cleared the platform, though I don't know if this is a rule or just guidance. HSTs don't develop full power until around 30mph anyway. Loved the run very much, 2 hours in an HST at up to 125mph is heaven! Even if they are predominantly MTU engined now😕. Look forward to the next video, Ben.
@PTGRail
@PTGRail 8 жыл бұрын
+Ben Reid I thought I was correct on that speed limit, basing it on cab ride videos I've seen before. The lag is partly caused by there being far too many 3D trees from what I understand. Thanks for all of the other information, it's very helpful and useful to know! I don't know why the brakes release so slowly on this particular HST as I don't think they used to? I also don't believe that it's prototypical? Thanks for your comments on my train handling, I always aim to drive in the most realistic manner possible. The braking is always the most challenging part of driving a train!

The HSTs have a form of electrically operated brakes. While the brake connections between vehicles are standard twin-pipe air connections each power car also has an electric brake unit. A cable runs the length of the train between each brake unit and so when a driver makes a brake application the application is started from both ends of the train simultaneously rather than just from the front backwards. While the brakes won't release instantly they should release far, far quicker than standard twin-pipe air brakes trains such as the WCML over Shap Class 87 or 47 which have the most realistic two-pipe air brake system modelled within Train Simulator. Indeed all the air braked British loco hauled trains within TS should have this system, though the Class 89, 90, 91 and 43 have an electric brake as mentioned. Though for ordinary loco-hauled trains (i.e. not HSTs), a Driving Van Trailer is needed for the electric brake to work. On HSTs if the electric brake system has failed then they are limited to 100mph as the braking distance from 125mph would exceed the maximum allowed. The traditional British Rail twin-pipe automatic air brake is fully variable between the initial application setting and full service, the Class 43, 89, 90 and 91 have a six-step brake control which will still only permit six Service Brake application levels even if the electric brake system has failed. The Class 47/7 push-pull sets used in Scotland from 1979-1990 were not equipped with an electric brake system despite possessing a DVT in the form of a DBSO. Though for Edinburgh to Glasgow workings with Mk3 coaches all vehicles were disc-braked, including the Mk2 DBSO which was specially fitted with disc-braked for this duty. With disc-brakes the stopping distance from 100mph was significantly reduced and braking levels were far more consistent which was particularly important for the descent into Queen St from Cowlairs. For reference an HST (with functioning electric brake) takes 1,930 yards to stop from 125mph with a Full Service brake application. An ordinary tread braked loco-hauled train (such as a Deltic with Mk2 coaches) takes 2,200 yards from just 100mph, which illustrates the superiority of the disc brake quite well. Glad you found the other information useful. 😊
