I remember msts. Bought it for $4.99 at an Office Max in 2003. Still have it installed. It looks old school now, but I still get a ton of enjoyment from it.

The great thing about MSTS is that you can play it's routes and addons on Open Rails (which is also free). It provides much better graphics as well as stability (specially on Windows 8 and Windows 10 computers) while playing. You should try it out.

One time on msts I took flying scottsman on Marias Pass, uncoupled enough cars to only be carrying 3, made sure derailments were off, and then set out. Without dlc or cheats, I got her to 200 mph some time after I went down the summit. One heck of an engine on that game. Spent way too much time on it. XD

Some of us were very lucky to experience MSTS back in the day when the train sounds were better, impressive expansions were value for money with plenty of content and there was plenty of support. Dovetail releases half finished products and puts them at high prices.

Hey, I remembered the MSTS few years ago just before I skipped Rail Simulator and before I get Rail Simulator 2: Railworks. The first game which I used the Flying Scotsman locomotive is the MSTS (Microsoft Train Simulator) with one of these addons like Great British Steam Locomotives, JustTrains Severn Valley Railway, European Bahn West Coast Express: London Euston To Birmingham New Street, European Bahn Locomotives & Activities Collection Add-on, and Glacier Express Add-On. The second game I used the Flying Sctosman is the Trainz Railway Simulator 2006 which unfortunately I don't feel like I'm using Trainz games anymore. And the third game I used the Flying Scotsman is the Rail Simulator 2: Railworks or sometimes Dovetail Games Train Simulator which are available to download on Steam. I would really want to get MSTS back myself along with these addons that I really want for EuropeanBahn East Coast Express Pt 1: London To Peterborough, EuropeanBahn East Coast Express Pt 2: Peterborough To York including Class A4 Mallard in LNER Garter Blue livery, EuropeanBahn West Coast Express: London To Birmingham, First Class Simulations' Fires And Wires, JustTrains Severn Valley Railway and JustTrains West Somerset Railway. Good old MSTS days. :-)

MSTS is the gem that started it all. Even its control scheme was copied-down by other train simulators after it. Fond memories of playing this when it first came out. Especially that German locomotive (its name escapes me right now...)

I think the graphics are still on the lower setting here. I mean, there's still no widescreen support and the game is from 2001, but pretty sure it didn't look this pixelated when I booted it up last only a few months ago.

It does take me back Oliver, and it was great back of the day. I find the game graphics in the old one does really look more like Hornby Railroad style, while today graphics in today train simulator look more detailed version of it.

Wow! Even the Flying Scotsman in Forza Horizon 4 looks better than the MSTS version, and that's a car driving game. It really shows how far gaming technology has come. To be fair though, the MSTS default version of Flying Scotsman is of the locomotive in its A1 form with right-hand drive, while the Train Simulator 2020 version is in its A3 form with left-hand drive, so it's not quite an exact comparison that you have here, but close. Oh yeah, the Settle & Carlisle routes between the two games are set in different time periods.
