Quite amazing how far that train actually makes it. Then again, it is heavy and has a lot of power. It always amazes me how the things don't get pushed of the rails. Trains and boats amaze me :D

The steel on steel thing makes sense. The size doesn't matter though because friction is exactly the same as you change the size of contact. Pounds per square inch goes up as you decrease contact size. You can experiment with this if you have a pull type scale. They must carry a lot of sand.

steel on steel has a lot less grip then what you're comparing it to. each wheel only contacts the rail over maybe a quarter sized surface area...takes a lot to stop a train, but if one is stuck like that, wheelspin is your main enemy. that is why locomitives are equipped with silica sand...when they are starting out, a lot of the time the train operator will release silica onto the track surface where the wheels touch to give more grip.

It takes incredible amound of force to move as much snow as those three locomotives did. They had the power to do it but had no traction, especially when the rails have became icy and wet.

No, the turbos are engine-driven to a certain speed, as these are two stroke engines and cannot run without some form of forced induction. This is why you hear the turbos screaming so loud.

I don't know anything about trains, or train plows or whatever. But I think train plows should be heated, so when it hits the snow, the heat melts it enough to move faster, so less stress on the train, or when it gets stuck, turn up the heat and start moving again.

I'm surprised it couldn't just back out. I remember we used drive yukes (aircraft tow trucks) into the snow. It took about a 6 feet of hard packed drift to stop a yuke but you could always back out over your cleared path.

It would depend on the locos. The first 2 look like GP38-2 locos, which are 2,000HP each. so 4,000 for the first two. Not sure what the last one is, assume about 1,500 HP, so you can guess combined about 5,500 HP.

The rotary plough would be a good idea, no chance then of getting stuck or hitting a hidden obstacle at speed (which they bravely don't worry about) but it would go very slowly. Seems they would rather go at high speed and accept the occasional set-back. The method would depend on how often it got stuck.
