And the reason sandstone slabs mine more slowly is because they're retextured stone slabs, just like the wooden ones

14:35 all slabs take the same amount of time to break, and a pickaxe is the preferred tool for all of them, including wood. basically notch didnt give them individual properties until later versions.

BTW mobs can walk through invisible stairs, they just won't pathfind through them unless they're aggroed

Interestingly mobs will aggro but can't attack if their head is inside invisible stairs. Not sure if this is true for creepers but skeletons won't shoot and zombies won't attack.
