Regular back ups are the main way. I found corruption occurred after game crashes. something i never fully solved

Have you ever though about using coal blocks instead of black wool? Might be a bit easier to obtain in large quantaties.

Coal Blocks would be a good idea although they were added around release 1.6 so didn't exist yet in Beta 1.7.3

black wool is just wool which you can get like 1 and a half stacks per hour with a spider spawner farm and inc sacs are pretty easy to get even without a farm, but i can share a design of mine that gets 20 stacks an hour
