Hi Harrison. Attempting to answer your question at 4:45 about the age of this brass diesels. Short answer is my educated guess is 1956 to 1962. The earliest brass locomotives were made by local Japanese craftsmen as one off orders from troops of the , usually US, occupying forces in Japan after the war's end in 1945. Being one off products, often using used ammunition shells as a source of brass. Being one off and made to order from photos and dimensions from the commissioning US soldier they were rare. Gradually very small production runs were made and by law were labelled Made in Occupied Japan until 25th April 1952 when it changed to Product of Japan. A US importer company Max Gray worked with the Japan KTM company to seriously import the best Brass versions available in 1954. Lots of O scale but some HO. From then on the Japanese brass imports became more significant each year with new importer and manufacturer teams starting up. These early brass diesels were not the most detailed or good running but the low prices and range of models impacted the US producers at the higher end. From this I would say your models would be 1956 to 1962 era. The era of the diesel they chose to make a model of would be unrelated to when the model was made except that it can't be newer than when made and usually older, especially for steam models. Hope this helps but the early era of brass was not well documented.

Nice grab there Harrison. Think.that brass locomotive is a VFUSO ( Vaguely F Unit Shaped Object) with a bit of a resemblance to the former GM&O F3s rebuilt to F10s for the MBTA back in the early 80s. On your searches keep an eye out for the old AHM crossing gate sets. You can look them up on Google under images to ID them if you're not familiar with them. These are not the AHM version of the full crossing like Bachman or Tyco but are stand alone crossing signals with a yellow 70s shovel nose Corvette and a blue sedan with 6 or so crossing signals. I mention these because they're rare to come by but if you cut off the molded gate portion from the hinge/counterweight part and replace the gate section with two separate pieces of correctly sized strip styrene with a little paint work to accurate them they make very realistic A frame crossing signals. I would also imagine if a bit of a mounting lug or hole was put on to the hinge portion the modern single bar gate could be done as well

Its been a while since i caught my amtrak going through my town so idk if they changed their locomotive class or not here in Kentucky but its always cool to see the same class of locomotive used in another country and the paint scheme they use on it
@antonbruce12412 ай бұрын
The brass loco set may be a bigger "steal" then you think. IF they are runners, bring brass and heavy, they'll probably great pullers! And as far as couplers on that A-B-B set - one can always put just one coupler on the last B unit, and add drawbars between the other two.
@SMTMainline2 ай бұрын
That's a good point. Draw bars are a lot cheaper than kadees.
@antonbruce12412 ай бұрын
@@SMTMainline Some EMD TR3 and FT units had drawbars, and some railroads used them between permanently attached loco sets, so depending on those locos...it may even be prototypical. A less expensive way to create a drawbar is to cut up an old expired credit card (cause you want to cut it up anyway), so all you'll need to do is get the correct length of card (based on what distance you want between units), round and drill holes in each end, and then paint them black.

That Life-Like Canadian Pacific F unit locomotive is obviously a double headlight type, which makes it impossible to get it converted into an AMRoad locomotive as seen in the classic 1976 movie comedy known as “SILVER STREAK” from 20TH Century-Fox.

If I recall correctly, @DarthSantaFe restored one of those brass engines- his was a Tetsudo. The distinguishing feature (or flaw) is that it appears they mashed an E7 front on to an F3 body, so it doesn't look quite right.

Red Loctite on the loose F7 wheel for a permanent install. Blue Loctite if you think you'll need to remove it. I would age them in the 1960's. That's when Japanese brass really started to appear on the US market. The nose contour is halfway between an E6 and an F7. That P unit is gorgeous. Via Rail. Actual passenger service. Must be nice. Brightline keeps trying it here in Floriduh, but Floriduh man keeps thinking the train stops when he runs the flashing red lights.

you could paint that A-B-B set as a Canadiana set, or maybe one from some other country, like Australia, Great Britain or somewhere else. You could also polish that brass up real shiny for something a bit different.
@johnd88922 ай бұрын
Australia never ran A-B-B sets. All Australian F unit derived locomotives were A cab units and six axle and longer than any F unit. A foot less higher and a foot less wide more or less. Even less of a F unit connection in the UK with and even more restricted structure gauge and government restrictions on imported locomotives in the F unit era. Meant zero UK F units.
@SMTMainline2 ай бұрын
I think I'd like to polish the brass until it's reflective.
@casstelles2 ай бұрын
The brass the A unit of the F unit has me intrigued. Looking at the nose, it seems to have a slant like the E6A. Could it be just a crude version of a F3A or a F5A locomotive? There's a mention of The Rio Grande having some that were a transition unit between the F3A and F7A. So, it would be interesting to find out the history of this model.
