Accented Cinema - Episode 43
A hallmark of a great film is when a character dies, the death sticks with you long after the credit rolls. Character death is something so difficult to do right, a lot of movies (and TV shows) botch on a regular basis. So, what does Train to Busan did right? Let's find out.

@Harry Fishnuts Remember 2006? In that one year alone Hollywood gave us: The Departed, The Prestige, Children of Man, Apocalypto, 300, Little Miss Sunshine, Last King of Scotland and Borat. Plus a few of my personal favorites: A Scaner Darkly, The Fall and Aronofsky´s The Fountain. Most of those movies were not just about making money and almost all of them would not be made today because the perpetually outraged social media could´t stand it... btw: i just re-watched Apocalypto and it is just as good as i remember it...

As a Korean, I was amused how this movie got so much praise outside Korea. This type of film genre, the one that conveys moral theme and kinda force audience to shed tears through dramatic moments (usually through character sacrifice) called "sinpa (신파)" in Korea, and its not exactly popular in Korea right now. "Sinpa" has been around Korea for decades and the general Korean audience were getting tired of seeing movies made into "Sinpa". The very ending scene with the dad character is considered some kind of joke in the nation and some people laughed out loud in absurd during the film seeing the movie made into "Sinpa". When "Train to Busan" appeared in theater, it was praised for speedy action not for its moral theme (rather, it got some discredit for being "sinpa"). Its amazing how when Korea got tired with "Sinpa", people around the world is dazzled by this new type of film and movie such as "Train to Busan" and "Alive" get so much credit through Netflix. Never have I thought about the characters the way you showed in this video and I thank you for showing how the characters convey meanings. Great Work!

as an Asian myself, born, raised, and is still living in Asian country, I think we Asians are still sucker for stories like this in general. Is it boring and sucks? Well, I do know some people who didn't see the appeal of this movie, even after they watched it. But, it still works! I remember that baby holding scene I was ugly crying in the cinema, and so does many others in the studio. And I think, analysis like this won't even exist if the whole execution of the movie sucks and messy, eventhough it's mediocre, at least I think it still did the job to tell the stories in a constructive manner.
@333pinkelephant333

omg I literally just commented the same thing lol I think this type of sinpa is refreshing to the Western audience but my gosh do i fcking hate this stuff. This overdramatic story and acting is SO overused. I had the same criticism for Pixar's "Good Dinosaur" which was directed by a Korean (Korean American I believe, to be specific) director. It was a classic Korean Sinpa (신파극) and it's just such a turnoff.

one of my favorite things about this movie is how it feels less like a movie and more like a real disaster that real people are trapped in. characters fill archetypes, but it doesn't feel like they _are_ archetypes. most significantly, deaths don't feel planned or scripted, they just feel like unfortunate casualties in a life-threatening scenario. this film makes you feel not like you're watching characters working through a plot beat by beat, you feel like you're watching _people_ trying to survive and help each other. (or just themselves, not mentioning any young-suk's, i mean names.)

Ahhh, the death of Ma Dong Seok and Gong Yoo always gets me... *sniffles* I think Train to Busan did a spectacular job in sculpting the ‘human’ in these fictional characters and portraying the helplessness simply because we know these different kinds of human nature (selfishness and selflessness) do very much exist in real life... and there’s no way to completely eliminate the negative aspects :/ I recently rewatched the whole thing, still is as great as I remembered :)

I like your charcterization of characters as Freudian personality traits; id, ego and superego. It is a great insight and a high explicative value to understand the movie.

Killing someone important is of great import. When I watched Guy Ritchie's King Arthur, a lady who had only *some* screen time (and virtually no characterization) was sacrificed for a major cause. Um... okay? I felt like I was supposed to feel bad for her, but I just felt like rolling my eyes and mutter "Who cares?"

OMG this is the perfect explanation. I hope people can get the message. I am a movie lovers, nowadays i find movie is somehow has the same formula. But i find some Korean Movie is mind blowing to the point you cant even explain it to others because there is too much incredible things happen. Like this movie, its not only about the zombie, its about us as human. When we face danger like that, how do will we react. How our character and our interaction will be. Still standing ovation to every character. They did a great acting there. Also everyone who involve in the production. And the writer obviously. Love this explanation. You do it perfectly!

I would disagree with your usage of freudian id and superego; they don't mean bad and good, they just mean something more like subconscious and conscious, unspoken and articulated. In that sense, the father character is what would be the id and the selfish man would be the superego -- the apathetic businessman has the impulses to be helpful and caring, but it's his conscious ideology (of "only helping yourself") that suppresses this. It's what he believes that holds back his instinct to care, which is finally allowed to come through after the events of the film show him how dangerous his selfish beliefs can be, and how they ultimately undermine his love of his daughter.

I guess it all really depends if you think humans are inherently selfish or inherently selfless. If you think about the selfish man, his actions seem to be instinct-based (we all want to survive, right?). I do agree that the business guy seems instinctively good (he's driven more by the need to protect his daughter).

Also, I laughed so hard when you described cheap, thoughtless, and boring character deaths and used Superman's death scenes from the BvS film! I have a question : Lets say , I don't like an evil person in a movie ,its a sign of good acting ,right? What if the actor appears in another movie but this time hes a good person ,but I still dont like him . Is he then a good impersonator of that 1rst movie? Or is this a "forever gandalf/Jack sparrow" - phenomenon ,where I only see "the one role" in every movie of him, which means in the same time he cant act well in other set up movies. Or am I just an idiot this time. haha An example like this was to me when I watched "I saw the devil" but I firstly discovered Sik Min Choi in "Crying Fist" where he plays a failed father but in the "I saw the devil" he plays a sick basterd as a murderer, I couldnt get angry of him :D
@StudioArtFX
@StudioArtFX 3 жыл бұрын
I think it just means the actor was great in the first thing you saw them in, and it becomes difficult to separate them from the role. Some actors get type cast for this very same reason. I guess it also depends on your age. I can't see the whole "forever Gandalf/Jack Sparrow" thing because I have seen each of those actors in tons of stuff before they took those roles.
